How Do You Guys Verify Your Wordpress Backups Are Working?
Currently I am backing up then manually restoring it on a new domain on new hosting. Its becoming quick time consuming each time and hassle. However this doesn't seems to be working for me because I get errors.

I was wondering if there were any more reliable ways? I would love to hear what you guy who have bigger wp sites do when it comes to this?

I open it up in SQLyog and verify from time to time.
I also test deploy on MAMP on a Mac.

I do periodic cpanel backups which requires me to log in. I do this for all sites no matter what they are running. However, and I've never had to verify if it actually works, but I dump one of my Wordpress sites into a dropbox folder everynight. The files appear to be all there. The plugin is free although there are paid enhancements. It's called WordPress Backup to Dropbox.

The quick way is to just check in the folder to make sure the files are all there. The best way is to not worry about checking and just make sure you have a reliable software for back ups. I've used and enjoy BackupBuddy.

I use BackupBuddy, so I do not have to worry about issues like this. One reason to buy premium is because it gives you peace of mind. Saved my butt more times than I can tell you.

Last week I had a full on disaster when I accidentally deleted an entire wordpress blog of nearly 1000 pages and the database too - what an idiot!!

You can read all about it here: www.black68.com/back-wordpress-site-easily

If I hadn't had Backupbuddy (I'm not an affiliate by the way!) I would have been in a real mess..

I verify my backups work by actually using them occasionally but what John J Rivers says is best. Just check your folders to see if the files are in there. But do yourself a favour , make sure you delete any old back ups otherwise you will be backing up back ups and using up a lot of unnecessary space.

I have and own a copy of all the backup plugins

The best I found to date are:
      1)Backup Creator
      2)wp twin
      3)backup buddy

1)I found Backup Creator to be the best for my needs. Its a plugin thats installed in your wordpress. backup from plugin then Just simply create a new wordpress install in a sub folder or subdomain and upload the Backup creator plugin and restore from the backup, presto a full blown clone site with new links!

2)WP backup Buddy is easy and safe to use. Simple upload your backup buddy backup file to a subdomain or folder directory you choose, go to the install php file and enter your password email and new database name, password, host and restore a full backup clone

3)WP Twin works like backup buddy but its not a plugin!

How do you test your backups?

create a folder on your domain and go restore the file to that folder to see how your site is restored and cloned! then delete it or keep it for split testing!

  • My hosting does weekly backups for me, and emails me on whether they fail or succeed.

      Verify

I guess your asking if there is actually a backup file created?

If that is a yes then know that if you use any of the plugins I mentioned earlier in my post then you will actually see and have the backup file on your computer hard drive by download, emailed to you or on amazon S3 and or cloud storage to check! If your using cpanel backups you can log into cpanel and go look for your backups or check by FTP!

Did you read my first post LOL

How do you test your backups?

create a folder on your domain and go restore the file to that folder to see how your site is restored and cloned! then delete it or keep it for split testing!

You can also do the same on a new hosting account!

USE FTP or Cpanel to add a directory folder then upload your backup files there!

      2)wp twin

Thanks and I did read your first post. I will try this with a new domain and new hosting. I don't really want to make a folder on the main domain because incase something goes wrong.

    Happy holidays joe.
