"First things first: we'll continue to serve you on odesk.com, and Elance customers will continue to work on elance.com. In other words, oDesk and Elance will operate separately and as usual, even after the merger is complete."

"I've decided that after the merger closes I will step aside and hand the reins of the merged company to Fabio Rosati, Elance's CEO. I will remain involved as a strategic advisor."

"Who will lead the new company? oDesk executive chairman Thomas Layton will continue in the same role at the combined company, and Elance CEO Fabio Rosati will serve as chief executive officer."

That's some really big news, might be a huge collision though, wonder how things will change or be the same as before, but this really might increase opportunites.

Good news that elance will continue to operate separately from odesk.
I find (other results may vary) the quality of freelancers better on Elance than Odesk in the last few years.

Yes, that's true. Odesk is the best place to get cheap labor, but if you want quality, you gotta go for Elance.

I just received the mail today. Wonder how things will change after this. Hope it won't, because I like how things are now, and I don't want to learn hiring through a new platform right now.

        I agree with ewritezone - as a not-so-tech-girl, I don't like to start learning a new platform now :-)

I wonder if there will be any noticeable changes on either site?

Does anybody think we as customers will benefit from this or not?

        Exactly!

I am no Debbie Downer, but I don't initially feel good about this move.

Freelancing, just like much creative work, has become a race to the bottom.

I "feel" that the fewer places that offer freelance work, the greater the possibility of price control.

Do I think Freelancer should have eaten up Scriptlance and vWorker, personally, not really but from a business standpoint, I totally get it. Freelancer just had a better platform, flat out!

On the other hand oDesk appeared to be a great stand alone, as well as Elance.

I guess in my mind, guru.com could have merged with Elance just as well as them picking oDesk, but that's just my freelancing opinion.

  • I read in some forums that this merger might be a disadvantage for those in Elance.

    What do you guys think?

Hope their service improves. I use to use elance years ago. Well, it has been a while now. People still remember the good old days, but we could see a resurgence. Maybe they will try to bring back what was. Vendors are not the same any more. Most of you do not remember the old elance which was a lot like FIVERR is now.

Less competition means less value for the customer. Let's

    My thoughts on this:
    1. Both Elance and Odesk were worried about the growing market share of Freelancer.com and that's the main reason for this merger.
    2. Sooner or later both sites and users will be merged into one. Something tells me that it will be more likely Elance based.
    3. From the previous experience of vWorker acquistion by Freelancer.com I don't expect the new merged entity to be better in any way than current Odesk or Elance.

I have been using Elance instead of Odesk because their freelancers seem to better. Elance also has some promotions that I like. I hope the merger doesn't make Elance worse.
