Scholar VS a Dropout

    Your point?

    Is it:

    A) That fake photos abound

    or

    B) That on the relatively rare occasion, a dropout can succeed while a scholar can fail?

    or

    C) That the scholar spends his money wisely while the dropout blows his cash on "toys"?

    Nah, not offended.

    It's just a peeve of mine in these forums with so many people (not necessarily you) telling college kids that dropping out of school to pursue IM dreams is a great idea and then proceeding to hold up one or two exceptions as the rule.

    This post comes across as making the same point.

    Typically, the kids who go to college are the ones that need the extra guidance and USUALLY can't think for themselves. They need that straight line to follow. This is neither good or bad.

    On the other side of the argument... Typically, dropouts are girls who got pregnant too early, boys who can't do anything but roll a joint, and the kids who see no future for themselves.

    There are examples of both good and bad for either side of the argument.

    Yes, there is hope for a person that's dropped out, but really if we're talking about high school, unless you are justin bieber and you're making millions and going on tour, I don't see a reason to. College on the other hand I can see people dropping out for good reasons.

      Those "good" reasons are few and far between and almost never have anything to do with chasing an IM pipe dream, especially when you can build an IM business part time in your spare time.

    I'm a dropout and made 2k today, I really sucked at school. But I'm sure that a lot of people do great in school and do find great jobs.

    Just remember just because you went to school doesn't necessarily guarantee you'll get a job in your selected field

      Congrats. Just understand that you are the exception. Also, there is more to college than "getting a job in your selected field".

      As for the 2k you made today, how much did you make in the last year - and the year before that -that's what really counts.

        I make a lot, i've been running my own business successfully since 2007 and haven't had a job since 2004

            yeah I'm not against school, I just really sucked at it big time. I hated it could never do well and was always getting in trouble.

            I couldn't get a decent job, or keep one so I saw starting my own business as the only option

            I can only hope everyone finds what makes them happy either with school or without it.

    i am one of those exceptions...a successful dropout. but i see things differently.

    I certainly got an "education" my first few years of IM. lol. I didn't have a diploma to show for it, but without that informal "education" at the school of hard knocks and trial and error, success would have eluded me forever.

    My point is that all successful people get an education..be it formal or informal.

      I think that is a really good point with
      the informal vs formal education.

      Theory only gets you so far.

      While real world experience
      is something different.

      Personally I'm really right
      in the middle of the dropout
      vs scholar debate.

      Everyone tries to give good
      "safe" advice and that usually
      consists of getting a formal
      education.

      This has been the usual advice
      for a long time so it is "accepted"
      as a truth.

      Yet, it's not unusual that
      people graduating today
      have a really hard time
      getting a job.

      I think that this in part has
      something to do with how
      the jobmarket is changing
      and evolving.

      Education is not keeping up
      with the changes that is happening
      in the real world.

      On one side having the theory
      of something will help you
      do something better.

      But on the other side having the
      experience is better in some cases.

      This again depends on what you
      want to achieve.

      For instance, I would like my doctor
      to have the education and experience.

      But if I was learning how to sell or
      market I would want to learn that
      from someone who has experience.

      Theory wouldn't be the enough
      in that specific scenario.

      If we want to be entrepreneurs,
      formal education might not be
      the answer.

      The answer might actually be
      that we have to get going
      and test things out.

      Test and validate.

      If it's good then run with it.

    Hi,

    Being hungry matters most. Some drop outs make a fortune, many scholars make a decent living. Many dropouts go broke, some scholars make a fortune. Few people understand being hungry is the key, and this level of hunger has to overcome any other desire in your life, including the desire to bicker on threads like these lol....

    I have 5 blog posts to write today. I am HUNGRY! This is what you need before all else, including an education, to succeed.....and few people have the discipline or desire to push themselves beyond all the BS out there and critics to get to that point.
