If you are trying to ask the question should you do Social Marketing vs. Email Marketing, the answer is this... You should do both! Having a list of subscribers is key to both.

Let's hope nobody listens to that awful advice. Putting 100% into social media is just stupid. No difference than putting 100% into SEO. Again, stupid. You OWN your email asset. The others are owned by a third party. Can you not see how important that is to think about?

Social media is just an inlet to build your e-mail list.

Your list is KEY to your business. Social media marketing is a strategy to get relevant people on that list.

Ofcourse you need both to promote your products although social marketing is usually used to capture emails for email marketing later.

Well it's obvious that Social Marketing these days is really booming but I still think that old fashioned email marketing works very well, even though some people keep saying that it's dead.

The answer is, where are your customers? If they are a younger generation, chances are they hardly ever check their email. If they are 60+ then chances are they don't have SM accounts and will check their email.

Another interesting statistic produced by Kissmetrics: "Leads who were sent 3 or more text messages after initial contact were 328% more likely to convert." Another avenue to explore. We just so happen to provide contact for biz owners on all of these platforms: Email, SMS, and Social

Good we can use both. But, according to your product/niche if you know the niche users (like employees, sales persons etc) you can go for email marketing. Without the niche email database it's a total waste of time (means to me; did that without knowledge on it). Now, i don't believe in that and they will consider you spam as well.

List is far more important. Take my list away from me now.. and I swear I will be on a headhunt. On other hand, destroy all all my SM accounts and I guarantee you I will still be able to eat my meals with no worries.

Invest in your list, communicating and building a list that loves you is going to be the best thing you can do. Everyone is social anyway, so just focus on social media to build out your list, but always nurture your list with learning how to write good email copy.

I do some social marketing but i do much more email marketing because that's where the bulk of my income comes from. Email gets my vote.

I would choose social marketing because you have more chances to have interactivity with them

Customer acquisition via email has quadrupled over the past four years...

CapitalOneSparkVoice: Why Email Is Still More Effective Than Social Media Marketing - Forbes

I agree with the "do both" mentality but if I was forced to pick only one, email would be the easy choice.

Email open rates have dropped (according to Gary Vaynerchuk's new book "Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook"), while Social Media usage is at an all time high.

So I think we are in a little bit of a crossroads.

Email marketing is still very effective, but the question is will it remain effective, or will open rates continue to tank.

On the other hand, while social media is at an all time high, the big problem there is social media sites come and go. Who knows how long Facebook, Twitter, etc are gonna be around.

So, I think the right answer for now is both. Since we are stuck in the inbetween, it is necessary to be on both platforms, email and social media.

Who knows? Maybe a few years from now, both will lose out to something that hasn't been created yet. That is the fun part about IM. It is always changing.
