... the crapiness that comes with the cheap hosts? especially server speed and downtimes...

How can $1.00 will be enough for the host to mantain a server?

It's a user acquisition based model that mostly relies on the fact that people looking to pay $1 for a server are not serious enough to start a serious website. Good way to build a nice targeted email list. Ultimately a large % of the sign ups probably never even upload an index file and they are probably at least able to make it an even wash with the benefit of an additional subscriber.

    It only looks like $1.

The $1 is usually the charge for the first month only. After that it's $5 or $10 or $20 per month.

The $1 offer gets the customer in the door.

Agreed.. and it also might be lack of knowledge, to some people webhosting is webshoting, they don't understand the saturation that can happen or any of the details behind it

The majority are either run by amateurs that don't have a clue & are looking to get rich overnight or kiddies on reseller plans.

EDIT: You usually see this in the summertime when school is out, then you get a bunch of people creating various threads like:

    "SUPERCHEAP1$HOST.COM - ANYONE HOME?!"

"BEST1DOLLARHOST SCAM STOLE MY MONEY DOESNT ANSWER SUPPORT TICKETS"

Every year, same theme. Take a look over at the hosting offers section and through the various special offers from so called "hosts" that have abandoned their customers.

I think it is a combination of a couple things:

    1. Like stated above, I think part of it is ignorance. They don't understand the differences between dollar hosting and higher priced hosting.

And just like if you found two items that looked the same to you, but one was cheaper, you would probably choose the cheaper item.

    2. The other thing is, maybe they aren't ready to commit more to their online pursuits. Maybe they are not convinced they can actually make any money, that building an online business is possible.

So, until they prove to themselves it can work, they aren't willing to pay for better hosting.
