My daughters cupcakes. How to monotize?

I just moved back to Washington from Arizona and am staying with my daughter, her husband (great guy) and my two grandkids.

My daughter is a stay at home mom with her hands full (my gandkids).

She is very talented. Cupcakes, cakes, children clothes and hats, etc.

Would appreciate any input from the Warrior on the best way to start a business in this field and monotize.

They could really use the money and it maybe a potential home business.

Please check out these photos of her cupcakes: Index of /cupcakes

Hard to run a food business from home due to health concerns. There are some more ways around this but I am no expert.

THe pictures look AWESOME so she is very talented. I would suggest a cupcake recipe blog maybe?

Darling cupcakes although I didn't look at all of them. My first thought is to put together an ebook with instructions and photographs of how she makes them.

Second thought is to do a video.

Set up a website with photographs and a couple of teaser recipes and instructions. She could use a blogger blog to do this, although I'd recommend her own domain.

Rather spectacular looking sweets. How about a baking blog with videos and work on googleadsense income.

      Greg sent you a PM.

If you can't do a video set up a slide show with audio.

Find yahoo groups with mothers and start participating.

Write articles on cupcake decorating with a link back to her site.

Link with other food sites. I've got one and I'd be happy to post a link to her site.

Pull together all the photos she has of cupcakes that could be used as a wedding cake and sell through wedding sites. I have one of those and would be happy to post her link.

Select the best photos and send to women's magazines with a cover letter that she'd be happy to write an article on cupcake decorating or be interviewed for an article.

Father's Day is coming up select a couple of photos, write up an article on how kids could help decorate cupcakes for Father's Day.

Do a press release with photos on cupcakes for Fourth of July

So I assume they're going to want to start a home baking business? Check the local laws required the requirements for operating a professional kitchen out of a home. You may find that they're not allowed to do so -- it depends on the jurisdiction.

If they DO decide to open a cupcake business, then the best way I can think of to get business is to give away cupcakes for a special cause (like delivering them to sick kids in the hospital, if they can receive them) and send out press releases to all the local media. Make sure they have at least a simple Web site and wear t-shirts with the URL on it as they give them away.

In addition, another thing that seems to get good traction is to give away cupcakes to local radio personalities, so long as you can deliver them while they're on the air. Radio talent LOVES food and especially free food, and they'll talk up your cupcake company live on the air as they devour them.

    Just two ideas...

Also, if they aren't allowed to operate a baking business out of their home, they can rent space in commercial kitchens. One place where some turn are local churches who have an approved commercial kitchen and will accept a donation in exchange for the use of the facility one or two nights a week.

simple, either print the business name/website on the cupcake 'cups' or make little 'flags' with the name/website and stick them in the cupcakes with toothpicks.

I wonder if you could sell adspace on a cake? You know like a big cake for something like an office party or whatever

And you know everyone that has cake or cupcakes usually has milk. She could have her own paper cups made so that when you tipped the last drop, at the bottom of the cup it would read

What you should do is video tape the different techniques that she uses for creating the designs and such and then sell a membership to a cupcake decorating course. That would be awesome! She could come out with new designs each month to keep people in.

If you want more info on my idea send me a PM I'm more than happy to help give you ideas!

Super duper ideas that allow her to make money from her talent of baking while not having to worry about the problems associated with selling food!

Those cupcakes are too cute - can you send me one so I can have a taste?

Those look too pretty to eat!

I second the idea of the membership site. With the HGTV/Food Network type activities growing in popularity, a lot of people would probably pay a small monthly fee for instruction - particularly if it came with some kind of ability to get a certain amount of personal support via Skype or something similar!

I was just reading Ryan Deiss' continuity model the other day, so it's on my mind right now...

How about starting a blog with recipes and instructions for making, then compile some into an e-book, then build a memberships site with more photos, videos and everything?

I didn't see catering mentioned in the thread. I would package this material up and do a one-stop-shop type of catering to parties and luncheons, associations, etc.

I see a ladie's gardening club eating this stuff up! If you could go in with the flower cupcakes, and crafts of, say, a gardening apron ...

Or kid's parties. You bring the cupcakes, and the kid's clothes ... you could even find a magician and just offer the whole package.

Or a ballet school having an end-of-year program (cupcakes and tutus), or approach them to help out with their open house to solicit new customers. You bring the cupcakes and they let you sell the tutus, etc.

And weddings, obviously. Baby showers, christenings, etc. Any milestone event.

As others have mentioned, if you can't cook from home you can use a commercial kitchen in a community centre, church hall, etc.

She could also try selling the crafts on ebay, of course.

And once she has some mileage behind her, why not a baking course through continuing ed? Different courses - garden theme, kid's theme, etc. Sounds like this is her passion and she'd prefer to be hands-on doing the baking.

Beautiful work. I would niche it down as much as you can.

Keep showing photos of those amazing looking cupcakes and then offer an opt-in for a weekly email that either gives a recipe, explains how to construct the decorations on the cupcakes, or links to a video demonstrating the process. Use the end result (the photos) as the hook to building her list.

photography photo tent, great deals on Cameras Photo on eBay!

Not an affiliate link, but it will help the cupcakes look the way they should.

I agree with selling information on how she creates these. FYI, one great way to tack on extra income would be to give away her information product as a bonus for people who buy something else through her affiliate link. Need to get people to buy a high ticket item through her (fancy blenders, something of that sort?) and then she gives them a bonus for ordering using her link. The bonus could be a series of videos teaching her cupcake skills.

    Just an idea.

A neighbour and friend of mine yesterday got clearance from her local (UK) authority to use her domestic kitchen to produce her cupcakes. She's planning on supplying tea rooms and cafes as well as catering for parties and special occasions.

I've talked to her about a blog with recipes and videos too but she's more of a kitchen and AGA woman than online and PC.

Personally, I'd recommend making money from cupcakes via online means, almost exclusively. If your daughter is anything like my friend she absolutely loves baking and decorating cupcakes, I'd hate to see that love sacrificed to the constant requirement of meeting deadlines of making 200 cupcakes by 1.00pm today.

No matter how much my friend (or for that matter, your daughter) enjoys making cupcakes, they've both got to remember that this is a business and as such the preparation, baking, decorating and distribution should simply be a process - the love can disappear.

It's not impossible to make a hobby a business, but it's a challenge.

Making money from cupcakes with an online recipe blog could take the pressure off the real life baking and allow the enjoyment of cupcakes to endure.

      Good luck to your daughter

Any kind of lodge (Moose, Lions, etc) has an approved kitchen. Same thing with a 5 star mobile home park. Distribute a free 'newsletter' to all the moms in the lodge/park and invite them to a FREE cupcake seminar and sign them up via opt-in email to receive a couple of FREE recipes and become proud members of the cupcake club.

Read through the local paper and see what local activities in various clubs are taken place. Offer to do a FREE seminar to all of them, in exchange for her to use their approved kitchen to make some cupcakes to serve them with.

cupcakemama.com is taken but not cupcake-mama.com, lol!

I remember seeing a TV show called American Inventor. I wasn't paying too much
attention, I was reading. What I do remember was a woman who could show people
how to make cakes, just like the ones discussed in this thread. One judge loved the
idea... Might be worth your while looking into what advice was offered there too.
