While not outright scams, these common store tactics are designed to separate your money from your wallet.

It's there; you just have to know how the site displays content.

Below the social sharing buttons, you'll see a slide show. Each 'slide' contains a photo and a piece of the article. Instead of viewing one page, you end up viewing 12 (including the intro and a link to another slide show).

Reduces bounce rate, keeps visitors on site longer, etc.

I absolutely hate those slide shows. They might or might not keep someone around longer. But that doesn't necessarily mean you are making more money from those visitors. The same goes with pinboards. Does it increase page views? Yes, but those tend to be low-quality clicks. The only time I want someone clicking is when they click on an ad.

It's also BEYOND annoying when you realize you want to go back to a different slide and have to keep clicking and waiting for images and crap to load to get back to it. Now, why would I ever buy anything from a site that wastes my time like that?

1,574,810 unique visitors and counting. And that's just one of my websites.

Sites like this don't really care if you click an ad or not. When it loads, they get paid. Making you click through 10 slides means 10 ad exposures instead of one, therefor 10 times the money. You'll notice that mega-media sites and their online newspaper cousins also take forever to load. Watch the status line of your browser and count the number of ad networks that load.

It's all about the CPM. For the record, I'm not a big fan either. But if my revenue depended on showing more ads, I'd use every legit trick in the book, too.

    Including pissing people off.

But I understand why they do it.
