Why Bash Guest Blogging?

I have seen over 14,000 page visits in a single day after publishing a guest post on Problogger.

My opt-ins have skyrocketed seven fold after each PB guest post.

My blogging rep grew over night each time I have guest posted on PB.

Sure, Google is cracking down on guest posting a bit....I guess....but as long as you stick to your niche, guest posting leverages your presence like few other practices.

A few folks on WF in a recent thread told a newbie to forget guest blogging.

Massive mistake. You will be writing for crickets until you learn how to tap into leveraging via guest posting.

Practice writing on your blog and guest post frequently to be discovered. Worked for me, and it has worked for many other bloggers too.

If you have 0 readers, and I have 60, or 100, or 10,000, or 100,000 you darn well better butter me up and submit kick butt posts my way....to leverage your presence quickly

Thoughts?

I would say your first sentence says it all. If you guest blog, on a high traffic blog, and write a quality article guest blogging can still work in a big way.

You are proof of that. Congratulations!

In my opinion, if you want "quality" links for your website; the ONLY option left is guest posting.

      Um...no.

As Alexa Smith recently informed (thanks!) guest posting is all about channeling a popular blog's traffic to your blog. It was never about backlinks and it never will be.

However, your reply wasn't surprising considering the link in your sig. :p

Although I agree that every advice on a public forum like this should be taken with a slight grain of salt, but I don't agree that guest posting is not about backlinks. This may be your personal opinion and few others might agree on it.

But I have seen great results on google serps with ONLY guestposting. Also, it doesn't matter if you agree or not, as in the current scenario; guest posting works like charm. :p

I sure do. Especially when the person who offers the advice has a relevant signature link.

You don't? Well, Matt Cutts doesn't agree with you.

If Alexa Smith agrees with me, that's good enough for me. Matt Cutts is just a bonus.

Of course not. My opinion isn't worth crap. But Google's and Alexa's is.

If by current you mean 2010, sure!

Whenever anyone says their BS advice on the forum, reply to them and tell them they're a weedy little shi*t.

That goes for this BS piece of advice from me, too.

You have everything right, except for this.

If you are talking about the thread that I am thinking of in my mind right now, the guy in question could never get a serious publisher to publish his articles, and he was playing the "poor" game rather than seriously considering to hire an editor.

I am not going to fault anyone who speaks English as a Second Language (ESL) until they refuse to hire an editor to clean up what they have created.

Problogger absolutely will not publish an article written by someone who is clearly struggling with the English language, after all, they have a reputation to uphold.

If I'm doing guest blogging it's for traffic purposes and the backlink are merely a bonus.

I couldn't care less what Google thinks of the practice tbh. Why do I need Google when a single post can drive thousands of super targeted readers to my site?

The traffic you can drive as the OP has indicated can be insane.

Other benefits includes a reputation / authority boost, makes it easier to get guest posts on other major blogs, increased traffic and email opt ins.

There are a lot of things that Matt Cutts says that don't fully play out in real life. I would agree that guest posting is MAINLY about leveraging the traffic from other sites, but I've experienced and seen that backlinks from big sites can make a huge difference in ranking. If your site is associated with another site in your niche that is bigger, then Google notices that.

      Now we're getting to it.

There are two kinds of guest posts. The kind we're talking about here - high quality content on relevant authority sites - not only give access to that site's audience, with the publisher's expressed or implied endorsement, it's exactly the kind of link Google is looking to reward.

The other kind is the ******* offspring of the old "backlinking with articles" strategy of scattering any piece of crap content with a keyword anchor link to any blog with an auto-accept feature. Which is the exact strategy Google is fighting.

It's kind of like being a little kid again. Play nice, and you get your treat. Don't play nice, and get banned from the playground.

I see guest posting as a good means for not just leveraging traffic (like everyone has mentioned above), but also for building relationships with others in your niche. I don't think I would bother having a blog, writing content for it etc, if I refused to contact other bloggers to collaborate with. You never know where these ties could lead.
