    Hey Corey,

So sorry to hear about that mate! I have heard of such stories before and I know how badly that can affect a home based business. Hope you bounce back soon with an alternate payment processor and get up and running with your business soon.

Unfortunately, most clients or freelancing sites utilize other payment processors.

All I can do is call them up and hope they do something about it (which from what I'm currently reading... they usually don't).

This is not the first time I've heard about Paypal completely cutting off a freelancer or site owner who was depending on them. And, apparently they are not required to justify the reasons for doing so either, such as providing proof of these 'unusual business practices' they claim are going on. The only thing I can suggest is using Payza or other source for getting paid. Just keep appealing constantly at least until you get your money back and then cut ties with Paypal. Once enough freelancers and site owners have taken their payment processing needs elsewhere, Paypal will get the idea and be put in their place. But so long as we let Paypal think they are our only option, they will continue with this type of bullying behavior.

    Hi Corey,

You can try using a payment processor that accepts Paypal on your behalf, there are several.

This is my biggest fear about going online. I'm sorry that I can't provide you with much useful advice.. other than asking clients to pay directly to your card?

Good luck with whatever you choose to do!

You can use freelancing sites until you sort things out, they will of course take a cut but you won't have to deal with this cr@p and also can use their escrow..

If you are working directly with your freelance clients, you might have the option of having them pay you with credit card. Paypal is not the only option. Have you considered taking checks or anything similar?

Try picking up the phone and speaking to a real human if you haven't already, your account was probably tripped by an algorithm (they're not perfect) and you're playing email ping pong with someone/people who's dealing with hundreds possibly thousands of accounts just like yours. PayPal also limits accounts and holds onto a rolling reserve for good logical reasons, it's call risk management.

Oh, I'll give them a call, but I don't think it'll do much good. From related reading and other people who have run into this issue, they don't care and they'll tell you there's nothing they can do.

This is the e-mail I got:

We have reviewed your PayPal Account and, due to the excessive risk
involved, we would like to begin parting ways in a manner that is least
    disruptive to your business.

    -----------------------------------
    Disbursement options
    -----------------------------------

Option 1. If you owe refunds to any of your buyers, you can use the money
in your PayPal account to refund them. Click "Contact Us" at the bottom of
the page with the transaction details. We’ll send a refund on your behalf
using money from your PayPal balance.

Option 2. Money in your PayPal account will be held for 180 days. After 180
days, we'll email you information on how to receive your funds.

Please do not reply to this email. This mailbox is not monitored and you
will not receive a response. For assistance, log in to your PayPal account
and click the Help link in the top right corner of any PayPal page.

    Sincerely,

      Hi Corey,

After selling 1000's of WSO's and many successful product launches, as others have noted this happens with PayPal all the time (unfortunately or fortunately depending how you look at it)...

DEFINITELY call them and get past level 1 and speak with a manager and authority at PayPal to give you their specific logic.

Last time this happened to me, PayPal put a 90 day hold on my funds by email..then I called them to find out it was a 7% hold on my funds, and then after 90 days, those funds would be released in sequence.

Be patient, work with them, they will give you some specific logic on why the hold occurred, and that info has helped me in my business in preventing it from happened in the future.

It has also taught me not to have my income 'depend' on PayPal, so definitely have 1 or 2 backup processors in place, so you can flip the switch off of PayPal when things go south, but your business storms ahead as per usual.

      Goodluck!

First off, you shouldn't be concerned with the experiences of other people, because their case is completely different from yours. Every case is different.

Second, you said you are doing freelancing work, then you told them you are selling digital products. Don't you see the disconnect in your story?

If your track record looks like you have been offering services, and you tell them you are selling digital products, then they might rightly sense that you are a big risk to their bottom line.

I hope you work it out with them, but I would recommend playing straight with them if you want a positive outcome.

The only reason why 99.99% of people never have a problem with paypal is simply because paypal is too big and doesn't have the time to check accounts manually. They have millions of accounts...thats why they use automated software to check stuff for them. BUT if they go and check manually...then most people would be in troubles...because if you read their rules word by word, I think even selling through paypal is forbidden. lol

So if any of you is saying that you have been using paypal for 5-10 years and never had a problem, the only reason is that paypal didn't look close enough at your account. Even I never had a problem with paypal before...for maybe 8 years...but I also know that tomorrow they can cancel my account for no good reason...I'm not naive to think otherwise and I always think of alternatives, so I don't end up being screwed.

I didn't know we are not allowed to sell through PayPal. The fact is Paypal has an option of choosing goods/services for every payment you make, that essentially means we can buy products and the other party can sell.

The only way to resolve this is to get on the phone and talk to them. Ask for a manager if a manager cant help ask for his supervisor. Someone can get this taken care of for you.

What level is/was your PayPal account? Personal? Premier? Business?

If your business is dependent upon managing your income through PayPal it should be a Business account. People often run into difficulties when they opt for one of the lesser categories.

On January 1st, they randomly sent me an e-mail saying due to a security risk, my card was deactivated and my account was "limited".

I'm a content writer, I've been freelancing since 2006. I called them and told them that I sell digital goods and they told me to just fill in what I can and they would take care of it all.

I just got an e-mail saying that they denied my appeal, they're going to hold my money for 180 days and that they want part ways with me. What the actual shit?

I have no suspicious activity on my account, I don't have a large number of chargebacks, this is literally came out of nowhere...

I've heard horror stories and heard about this happening to people, but I always thought there were two sides to the story and that they were engaging in malicious activities. I didn't think it would happen to me... well now I am sincerely screwed.

PayPal is what I use to pay rent, eat, etc.

    Awesome.

What the hell... large shifts in business practices? My account activity looks the same as it has for years now. Nothing has changed.
    Hi Corey,

So sorry to hear that! Was your account was a verified seller account or a personal account?

All you read are the horror stories, and only one side of those.

Think about it. If you run into a snag and resolve it with a simple phone call, what's your motivation to talk about it on a public forum?

On the other hand, if you truly believe you got shafted, and the automated system doesn't fix things, and you'd rather squawk about it looking for sympathy, posting on a forum board makes perfect sense.

[Corey, I'm using the generic "you", not addressing you personally.]

Or, you get caught doing something shady, and you have a tantrum because the entity won't change the rules for you. Much easier to play victim than admit your sins and move on.

I don't have enough information to tell you if Paypal has it right or not. At this point, neither does Corey. All he has is a mechanical action and a computer generated form email to go by. Once he gets someone with some gravitas on the phone, he may not get the decision he wants, but odds are he'll at least understand it.

If you can try to be patient with paypal and don't argue with them (they can be frustrating but they are a valuable service). As others have stated try and get to someone in authority on the phone and try to work things out. If that doesn't work and they're determined to close your account. Then let them close it (just get your money first). Then simply wait a few weeks or a month then open a brand new paypal account. But make it a different type of account then you had before. So if you have a personal account now, if it closes... then open up a new account as a premier or business member. They may even contact you about it. But but if they ask you if you've been a member before, just be honest and say yes. That you are setting up a new type of paypal account.

I used to see this freezing of accounts a lot. It even happened to me once long ago. It was for absolutely no reason at all. What I started to realize at that time, was that if I left any significant amount of money in my paypal acount (which I used to do) they were more inclined to find some reason to start holding funds.

Once I realized that I started to instantly withdraw out of my paypal account whenever I got anything sent to paypal. Anytime I received any amount sent to paypal I would transfer it out (take it out) the same day. It got to where I would never leave more than 10 dollars in my paypal account. When I started to do that all those problems stopped and was never a problem since.

If you have a relationship with your freelance clients, you could have them email you payments (EFT). Naturally, for the eBook sales, you'd have to find a new payment processor, at least while you're duking it out with PP. As someone else mentioned, it's a good idea not to put all your business eggs in one basket, anyway.

    Well, I didn't expect this.

After sending out an e-mail to every executive PayPal e-mail I could find on the internet, I got an e-mail 30 minutes later saying my account access had been restored.

Normal e-mails and phone calls were getting me nowhere and then I noticed a 402 area code calling so I answered. It was one of the executives at PayPal.

Basically, what I was told was:
It looks like someone pressed the wrong button on your account.

    Well, that's a relief...

I have heard a number of horror stories of people having issues with paypal and I did once have my (personal) account blocked for a few days. I can say, once I have signed up for a "pro" account and verified my company info, I have never had an issue and more importantly, when I call, I can quickly get a real live human being on the phone who can make changes on the account. They have the $5 a month plan now as well (pro is $30) so for anyone making use of them, I highly advise full merchant status if you dont have it already.
