I want to quit a job for my IM career. Need your Advice !

Hello everyone,

I am currently working as a computer operator in government department and getting only $266/month salary.

I am doing Internet marketing since 2009 and now earning $2k / month quite consistently from member ship sites and my business is growing rapidly as i am creating more and more member ship sites with the passage of time. And my goal is to have consistent $5k/ month at the end of 2014 (i am quite confident to achieve that)

Now the real problem is that i am tired doing 9-5 job some times i have to sit late night 8-9 pm to complete my official assignments. Which Negatively affecting my online business and i am tired off doing 50 hours per week job for only $266 (Which is Only $1.33 per hour) while i am earning well over $2k / month on auto pilot on the internet.

What's the problem now ?

My family member ( specially mother and father) are insisting me to keep my government job. They think that the job is more secured then your online business. If my online business fails, i can keep doing the job for next 25 years JOB SECURITY ! which is the biggest concern of my parents.

Now i am confused what to do ? i don't have to be a slave for the rest of my life. I want to be full time internet marketer and i am quite sure that i can give a big boost to my business if i am allowed to work full time for it. I need advice from fellow warriors. What should i do ?

    I'm confused...

You're making $2,000 a month doing internet marketing, and ONLY $266 a month with your full time job and you don't know whether to quit that job?

A classic problem of societal pressure. In many a developing countries a lot of emphasis is given to so called stable jobs does not really matter if its a dead end job for you.

Bro, you have got something real nice going for you. You are in good shape to quit and focus on your marketing. But do check how that's goanna impact your life especially with your family and relatives.

If you could get $80,000 in the bank & say, "mom, dad, I got 25 years of salary in my bank account, I am quitting this job,(then throw them the bank statement)". Watch them gasp, and, then they'll reply, "sonny boy we were just jesting, lets have a drink to your success, (italian toast),salute". LOL.

There are two things to consider.

    1. The real risk of quitting your job.

I don't know anything about your current business or financial situation but when anybody says to me I will leave my job to do internet marketing I ask them the following. Do you have 1 year of savings in the bank so if all your income disappeared you could survive for a full year? How reliable is your income? For example if you make money from a niche that cannot disappear like dating, love, health etc.. it should always have customers. Next is how reliable is your traffic and could you replace that traffic with another source. So for example if you get all your clients from natural rankings in Google and you wake up tomorrow and all your rankings are gone due to algorithm change or bad linking decision have you proven you can replace the traffic with facebook or ppc etc.. Finally I ask the person how good are you at adapting and building out completely new online businesses if the current one evaporates.

    2. How much will your life be affected by the opinion of others?

It is VERY good to take into consideration the opinions and lessons from others BUT we must understand as internet marketers that 99.9% of the population will never understand what we do. I believe that every successful self employed person has scared their parents or wife etc.. by taking a risk. I simply recommend to minimize the risk as much as possible in regards to my points above and then you must decide for yourself how you will live your life.

Is your 2k/month income very recent? Often what helps is when you are making substantial money for some time family becomes more accustomed to your success and more comfortable in your decisions even if they don't understand what you do. Some of my friends and family thought I was crazy as well until I started paying cash for cars and boats ;-)

Thanks for your reply. Well, i am doing online business since 2009 and i am consistently earning $2k a month since 2010 ( almost 3 years)

I have been doing freelancing between 2009-2012 and was providing internet marketing services on freelancing sites. In 2013 i was shifted towards product creation and SEO . And i am still earning the same amount of money on avg i.e. 2$k a month and currently my business is growing quite fast and i am expecting a huge boost in 2014 hopefully.

I have skills, knowledge and confident to construct a new business online if the current one fails. I only need $600-700 monthly to cover my basic needs of life. So for example my current business gone down overnight. I can easily earn $600-$700 per month providing services and doing other simple stuff Because $600 is enough in the country i am living So in case my current business get's down, i am 100% sure and confident that i have the skills and even money to invest to construct a new business and get success.

According to my parents :- That $266 per month from my full time and government job is quite secure. They are saying that my online business is not a solid business and it has huge ups and downs. if you failed some where, then you have nothing to do to support your family. On the other hand, the income from your job is solid and secure.

These are normally very good and prudent questions, but dude come on!

In the first post we learned the person already has 7.5 times the income from the business as from the job, and has been growing it using the same model for the past 5 years (that's a century in Google animal years), and yet has to work 50 hours a week on the job, which s/he says is cutting into the business efforts.

No shiny object here, nor unrealistic dreaming; we don't have to wonder like many times when "should I quit my job" comes up; "will they just flounder and end up playing video games until desperate enough for another job?"

This is not a person asking if they should leap off a cliff. S/he is asking permission to do something which makes obvious sense, but which the family disapproves of.

The disapproval is the only reason not to. Disapproval of others isn't a good enough reason to stay a slave when you have a great life income (considering the place; it has to be third world) developed outside of it, and are poised (having confidence in a model repeated many times successfully), to give it a huge shot in the arm, by multiplying the hours devoted to it without sleep deprivation, which likely is a problem right now.

As far as the stability goes; there are few models more stable than multiple membership sites with recurring fees. If one goes down, there are others, and more are continually being added. If traffic sources fail, there is ample time to develop new ones before attrition pulls the rug out.

Even if the OP somehow managed to screw up everything s/he has successfully built over 5 years, do you think their skills wouldn't be snapped up in a New York minute, were they to come here looking for work for $2.00 an hour?

Just the fact of posting here, combined with their skill set, gives them a huge opportunity advantage over other third world wage slaves. I've hired people for $3 an hour that are far less capable, and considered it a bargain.

In this case, I think by far the most prudent thing for the OP to do is to quit the crappy job, and continue to diversify and build their income by doing more of what is already proven and working for them.

I think this is a decision you have to make on your own. Others will give you opinions and much of the advice is good.

But it's your life - your family that is opposed - your future. If you feel strongly about working in IM you will know when the time is right to do it full time.

If you are questioning and uncertain - you aren't ready to make the jump yet.

Every month that your doing IM is getting you 9 months worth of your job. If you get up to your IM goal of $5k per month then every month of IM would be 18 months of your job in income.

So basically your IM does not have to last 25 years.. it only has to last 16 months and you would still earn the same salary that you would have for 25 years of work at your job.

Thats a no brainier my friend. Quit your job and work your IM. If you IM flops after a year or two .. who cares because you have 25 years worth of income saved.. which means your now free to do something else without worry since you have a nice cash reserve.

I have to agree with this statement if you feel it will last at least as long as 16 months then you've secured that 25 years of work.

So it kinda of shows it's a risk worth taking and after all in this field we all do it by faith and jump.. then hope we land where we expect.

    Let's do the math...

For 3 years you've been producing a monthly income online
that is roughly equal to 9 months of your monthly salary at the
    government job.

Allowing for the fact that you spend some of that business income
on lifestyle you should still have several thousand dollars in savings
    or investments.

    Do you?

If not, I'm going to agree with your parents. If you don't have several
thousand in savings... based on your income I'm saying 30 or 40 thousand
dollars... then you haven't yet learned to manage money properly and you
should hold on to that guaranteed position until you do.

It isn't really about the security of the government job... that's an illusion... it's
about subjecting yourself to the daily discipline of doing what you should be doing.

So, if you don't have those savings start now... and don't quit your job until
you do. I'm not letting you off the hook with 6 months of expenses in the bank.
If you don't have the 30-40 thousand you won't survive on 6 months xpenses
because you don't have the discipline.

If you do have that much in savings/investments then quit your job and
devote your time to earning your fortune.

I worked for 10 years (from 2000 to 2010) and was paid $460/month as manufacturing supervisor in an automotive manufacturing before I resigned. I started earning online from 2004 but it was not stable enough to quit my job. My earnings ballooned in 2008 but it took 2 more years before I put my employment time behind for some specific reasons.

    1. Employees who spent at least 10 years have higher severance pay and have loyalty bonus equivalent to 1 year salary.

    2. I completed my 10 years SSS contributions to qualify my self for pension when I reach 60 years old (hopefully). I'm 35.

    3. I had to make a bigger financial preparation before I leave my job.

And in your case, since you are already earning that much, give your self few more months to save money. Save money equivalent to your 1 years salary ($266 x 12 = $3,192) Make sure this amount is sitting in your bank account before you quit. this is to make sure you have a full year salary just in case your business fail (hopefully not).

Give your job to other people who badly need it. I'm sorry to say this but if you keep forcing your self to work in government, your inefficiency will only result to poor public service.

    Quit your job. Good luck.

Why even bother with a job that pays less than $300 a month?

Go big or go home is my best advice...

If you're making $2K a month on a regular basis....

Go for it and just save $1K a month, every month.

I know you since ages since we are first cousins and friends and we actively seek each other's feedback, advice and suggestions on our business ventures.
Since I am from the same country, same culture and the same extended family I can understand your concerns quite well and as you know fully well I have faced the same since ages.
I was extremely unhappy doing a 9 to 5 (9 to 9 actually) job for one or other employer because it was not something I liked. That alone was the decider for me on what I want to do. Sure I have made mistakes and sure I earn a little less than you right now but I have never been happier in my whole life every since going full-time entrepreneurial two years ago.
I am more of a risk taker so I would advice to take everything I say with a bit of caution (and pay serious attention to some of the very nice suggestions made above by our other friends) but I feel a man of your talent, with the achievements you have made is WASTING his time by sticking to a $260 job when he can earn $10,000 in a country where he needs only 1/20th of that amount to live a life full of fun, luxury and quality.
You my friend have the ability and potential to earn $10,000 or even more. I envy you for your ability to take calculated risks, brisk decision making and just some very hardcore consistent 18 hours a day HARD WORK.
    I would suggest the following:
    1. Make sure you have 6-12 months worth of savings (i.e. $24000)
    2. I know you have steady income coming in from 3-4 different niches so you are covered there but invest into building a subscriber list whom you can send quality relevant content via newsletters (you are seriously lacking in this department and you must invest in it but I am sure once you spend sometime on it, success will be yours just like other times)
    3. Invest some amount into an offline venture or real estate or something of that sort.

By my dear cousin, even after you do all of this and even if your income touches $4,000 and you quit your job:

    - Your parents won't get you; call you disobedient (and blame your cousins, including me, for messing with your mind )
    - Your extended family will criticize you (since ours didn't not any entrepreneurs before our generations; I don't consider farming done by our great grand parents as entrepreneurship but let's leave that academic discussion for some other time)
    - Your ex-colleagues will call you stupid and your ex boss will cal you stupid AND crazy AND naive

But wait till you have built that house, bought a new car and made a couple of those planned part-business and part-leisure trips to Europe and Thailand, and every (excluding your parents) will be convinced that you are the man.

    All the best!

I wouldn't work for that monthly pay while I can double my current monthly income from IM if I went full time into it.

But you need to be disciplined in how you spend what you earn. Come up with a strategy, save a third of what you earn - whether u r working as a government employee or you are in IM full time. I believe IMers are disciplined and focused

Then, live your life. Don't let people live it for you. Later in life, you will come to realize you wasted your prime years pleasing others instead of fulfilling your purpose. Do what you love - IM.

    Quit Man...

I resigned from my full time (very posh job) banking job in May 2012. My salary was £30000 per year (£2500 per month) though I had some money in savings as a backup.
Since I resigned, I have seen 600% increase in my net profit per month. I never looked back and I truly believe and pray I never look back.

If you are earning good money from internet marketing, then think of how much money will you make in small time comparing to your govt job in whole life....

You're working full time and only earning $266? To be honest you need to sit down and explain to your parents what you do because they'd be blind to think $266 is better than making $2k+ a month.

How much time are you spending at your government job compared to your IM business?

If it's 40 hours/week making $266/month that is less than $2/hour. Most likely you are spending less than 40 hours/week doing your IM biz and making $2,000.

I think you see my point. Do what you feel is right for you but be willing to take the necessary risks to become successful. Good luck!

I am not working on hourly basis in IM i am just scaling up my work and creating automated streams of income which require less efforts All of my current income is automated. I am just spending 30 hours per week to create more stream of income and scaling up my work as much as i can

I might sound like an idiot to IMers here that i am still doing $266 per month job. But i am now coming to a conclusion what to do. I have some options in mind that i may consider.

I am trying to conveyance my parents.. I have to invest into local real estate or something, construct my own house. Then i will come up with my final decision. But it may take 2-3 years

There is no right answer to this in my opinion.

Your government job IS more secure. Entrepreneurship in general is not secure...certainly not when you are starting out. Entrepreneurs are bold and take risks and many fail. That's just the cold nature of it.

So doing what you are doing right now is the more secure route.

Many people take the plunge into full time IM once their online income matches their offline incomes. But again, it's a risk. Sometimes it's worth taking, sometimes not. It all depends on your obligations (do you support a family, do you have a financial safety net if your IM business fails, etc) and depends on your risk tolerance and depends on your actual IM business now (how confident are you it will continue to earn income...how confident are you that it can grow)

    I will tell you this.

Most entrepreneurs I've spoken to have something in their gut that guides them to the right decision. Whether that's getting 4 hours a sleep a night for the next 2 years and grinding away at both until you are more confident or whether it's taking the plunge right now...generally your gut will guide you in the right direction.

But like life, all business is a risk.

I'm young and didn't really have any obligations when I started so it was an easy decision.

I think one should have multiple streams of income even within IM and out of it. For instance here is what my plan looks like (some of it I've successfully implemented and some of it I am in the process of implementing):

    1. Secure 2-3 good long-term clients to whom I can provide IM services at a GOOD rate. By long-term I mean clients who have been so happy with the results that you provide that they are willing to sign up a 6-12 months contract with you.

    2. Create multiple niche sites in different businesses

    3. Diversify the types of marketing you do; go beyond SEO alone (so that not all your sites are hurt so much that your income becomes ZERO next time an update comes) and invest into email marketing, PPC advertising, and of course HAVE at least one BLOG and create high quality content regularly. This way you are not dependent on just one source for getting traffic/leads/sales. If you can, add webinars and podcasts to this.

    4. Build a small but dependable team who can do assist you in all your IM activities so that you can save time and do more and do things smarter

    5. Invest into offline opportunities such as real estate (which, like in my case, is the best and most safest investment opportunity) and really get the hang of it. This can also include speaking activities, paid webinars, guest lectures in local universities if you are into speaking, consulting local clients or online clients etc.

    6. Make yourself a personal brand whom people trust and want to listen to

Of course this takes time and effort but its worth all the pain.

I would love to hear what others think of this, especially on any offline opportunities that exist (which can be fueled through online IM activities).

If it makes you feel any better I have just handed in my notice at my job where I earn £37,000 per year to concentrate on my IM business. I did this because I really don't like my day job and it brings me down. I feel I want to give the best of myself to something I believe in and have a passion for. I am not yet making this in IM but I don't care. I would rather have a little hardship and live on baked beans on toast for a few months if need be but when I wake up in the morning I want to feel happy and excited about what my day holds and not dread getting on that bus and spending the best part of my day in a world I don't belong in. I truly believe I have made the best decision EVER!

For me I think, what's the worst that can happen? If it doesn't work in 6 months to a year I can always just get another lifeless job in the city. But I know it will work because I know I will make it work, or die trying!

But my situation may be different to yours. I only have myself to worry about, my family can take care of themselves.

Still, I say if you are making $2,000 per month working on your IM business part-time, imagine what you will make when you do it full-time!

If this story is genuine then all you have to do is show them your bank statements and they'll soon come around.

You'll need a history of making that money though. If it's a one off then it could be a fluke.

4DayWeekend, did you read what he wrote??? He's been doing this consistently for 3 YEARS!

        To the OP:

        Congrats! That's a tremendous accomplishment.

The answer to your question will be different for everyone. As someone else pointed out, it depends on several factors: your tolerance for risk, your personal and business expenses, your debt levels, etc. If you're single with no kids, you can afford to take greater risks.

Personally, I'd accumulate 6-12 months of personal AND business expenses and then quit, period. Yes, maybe it should be more, but sometimes the freedom is worth the risk.

As for your parents... Yes, you love them, but it sounds like they're CLUELESS. Do they realize that you're in the hole every month with your government job??? Do they realize you've CONSISTENTLY made $2K/mo for 3 YEARS???

Nothing about entrepreneurship is guaranteed. But neither are jobs. And you're doing very well!

Love them and respect them. But only take advice from those who know something about entrepreneurship. Make your plans based on YOUR goals and desires -- and capability to actually do it. Ignore everything/everyone else, yes, even family.

Edit: Ultimately, only YOU can decide what's best for YOU.

        Good luck!

Here is the short answer that will work for everyone that is influencing your choice. I am going to guess you can live on $266 a month? ( wish I could ) Your parents want to be reassured, that's what parents do.
So open up a bank account. 12x $266 = $3192 x 25 = $79800. You need to have basically 80k in the bank and then what can your parents say?

40 months and your parents are happy, and you will be happy. Think about that you will have the next 25 years of your life covered in a bank account. I personally have 5 years worth of living in an account. Talk about not having to worry!

If you are earning $2000 a month CONSISTENTLY doing im then you have got something special going on. I would say quit the measly paying job and use the extra time you have in your hands to expand your im business. Remember it is not just about money, it is about your physical and mental health, your happiness, the ability to enjoy your life. So why lock yourself 5 days a week 9-5 each day and somedays stay at work even longer, for a very low wage, if you can get more money staying at home doing what you love? I say quit now, break free.

I think everyone here is really thinking one-sided. He has a government job as a computer operator. I don't know, but your focus should be on building experience and either relocating where the pay is better or find a new company to work for. Either way, that job security and work history is valuable, even though the hourly pay is terrible at the moment.

$2000/month is not a sturdy enough income for him to comfortably throw that away. Even though the hourly pay really sucks, to say again, there is a level of security there in that he can take that government work experience and reference to another higher paying job in the future, and earn much more than $2000/month.

      Look at the facts:

      1) The OP is making 7.5x the income doing what s/he really wants to do, using one of the more stable and secure business models for a one person online entrepreneur: multiple membership sites with recurring income from a number of users. If one site dies, the others keep producing, and the OP's model as stated, is to build "more and more" of them over time, which has already produced a diversified, growing, recurring income.

      2) The OP has been building this up for years, resulting in proof of concept and proof of the OP's ability to successfully execute the concept repeatedly.

      3) The OP dislikes the job, and confirms what anyone could deduce with simple logic: the more than full time spent at that job is slowing down the growth of the far more lucrative business.

      4) The OP loves being an entrepreneur, and does not aspire to your prescribed career path of seeking better employment.

      5) The OP lives in a place where a more than full time govt job pays $266 a month, which obviously means a third world country.

      6) The OP obviously has family there which is a central part of his/her life.

      7) The OP would have to move to another country far from the family and support system, and start over to seek a job that might pay 10x as much.

      8) Moving to a new country to seek a job is far from risk free, although the only reason you offer for the OP to go against what they want to do in order to follow your plan is "security".

      9) The work history from a third world country govt job is of questionable value to an employer in a first world country.

      10) You are saying not to give up the job security. But the current job will never lead to the kind of income you alluded to; even an unheard of 100% raise would still make for lousy pay, particularly in comparison to the well established business income. In other words, your plan requires giving up the job. In other words, give up "job security", to seek a better job.

      11) Nobody can fire the OP, which arguably beats any job for security, and security is your only argument for doing the opposite of what s/he wants and is perfectly positioned to do; a lot more of what is already working. Instead you advise the total derailment of their excellent plan in favor of a huge upheaval, for the chance to pursue something they don't want, with no guarantee of success, and even if they succeed, one person can decide to end their success in a moment, unlike their business.

In other words, what you deem "one sided" is Warriors merely giving the OP exactly what s/he asked for, which is permission to do what s/he wanted to do in the first place, what makes obvious logical sense and is prudent at this point. The one sticking point is the opinions of those who don't see the world beyond jobs. To which your voice is now added.

Your idea of following the opposite of their dream for the sake of security is a far more radical upheaval of the person's current life, than quitting the lousy job to multiply the time spent pursuing the entrepreneurial route that is their dream, and which they have already repeatedly succeeded at. You say the income isn't "sturdy enough", even though it is huge by the standards of a place where $266 is acceptable for a full time job. How you think moving to a new place to seek new work, is more "sturdy" than their successful business is beyond me.

Not my idea of the essence of prudence.

Why are you tied to a job that you admit doesn't even cover your monthly living expenses unless there is greater potential down the road with this job?

This should be a no brainer decision and you should have made the choice to leave long ago. There must be something you're leaving out...

You must realize that answers on this forum will be biased because everyone here is looking to be their own boss, not work for someone else. Entrepreneurs are risk takers. If you can't handle the risk, then stick to your cushy job. You have the skills to make much more than $266/mo even if the internet were to blow up. I'd say go with the business.

Kinda jumping on the bandwagon here, but quit your job. You mentioned you work like 50 hours a week at your regular job and then do your other stuff on top of that? Imagine how much more you could make if you devoted that 50 hours to your IM stuff. Your $2k a month would probably double or triple within the year and you can just keep scaling up from there.

You're on a good track, I know we always want to please our parents, but they're not always right. IM can be up and down, but there will always be money to be made online and you seem to know what you're doing with it. Just stay vigilant on whats working and what isn't and adjust your strategy accordingly and you should be just fine. Good luck to you!

If you really are making $2000 in IM, you need to ask yourself if you know how to sustain your business and keep the money coming month on month.

If yes, either quit your job and make your parents unhappy (trust me its gonna be temporary) or simply outsource your online work so you can focus on growth, your Gov job and also your parents' happiness.

If you are already earning $2k/month from IM part-time, there's no stopping you from growing and scaling it up even more once you go full-time. You're earning almost 10x your full-time job income, so as long as you have a clear plan, go for the IM route!

To share another perspective, I'm in the exact opposite situation. My day job is still 10x my part-time internet income, and yet I'm already making plans of how I can get my IM income to overtake my day job.
