Monetization Ideas for Fitness Site with 10k Uniques / month

About a year and a half ago, I built a website that helps people who are looking to join a gym find one easier (essentially a directory w/ certain info you can't find anywhere else).

Traffic growth started super slow, which was pretty discouraging - there was one day a few months after I launched it where I had something like 2 visitors total.

Soon after, I got a new job that made me sort of neglect the site. Anyway, over the span of the next few months, the thing took on a life of its own (with me doing nothing). Next thing I knew, I had 10k uniques per month, all organic. I threw adwords up on there to try to make a few bucks. I make anywhere from zero to 5 dollars per day with it, and I feel that traffic dipped slightly almost immediately after putting it up.

I also toyed w/ linking up fitness related daily deals too via groupon, etc, with limited success.

I recently added 4x as many gyms, so I think traffic can at a minimum double within a couple of months, especially as it's "gym joining season" now.

Outside of trying to sell advertising to gyms (which would be a full time job), what else can I do to monetize this thing I created?

Sell ebooks related to fitness like a guide to crossfit, bodyweight exercises, kettlebell guide etc. You could also add ebooks on diet like paleo.

You could also sell banner ads to fitness gyms.

Ratracegrad has some good idea's. Some more would be weight loss plans, as that is part of the niche. Supplements, would be another one, if you can get the right affiliate program.

I would assume, that you are into fitness, so anything that you would use yourself, juicers, etc. If you have used a product and it has worked for you, then write a review, and sell that product on the site.

Cloths may be a good one also. Anything that you promote, just keep it in the niche.

Think outside the box, with things like, quit smoking, as a lot of people, that are just starting out, have a lot of things to overcome. So you may want to look at some motivation material also.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input... realistically, with affiliate marketing, how much is doable to make per month if done right?

My Friend, that all depends, on the % that are paid. And of course how many people, will like and want the product.

With what I am promoting, we are seeing people, make thousands, in a short amount of time, but that has a lot to do with the product, and that it pays, almost all the money to the affitiate. I have never gotten to the niche you are going for, so you will have to do your on testing.

Sorry I can't help you more.

In my honest opinion, the EASIEST way to effectively monetize your site would be to find affiliate programs. In the fitness niche, there are LOTS of affiliate opportunities on Clickbank. However, you can surely find all types of affiliate links elsewhere on the net as well by simply typing "affiliate programs for fitness niche" or something like that.

Once you have a few QUALITY affiliate programs (it would be a good idea to actually check out the programs which you will be promoting, but it's not completely necessary) you can simply go back to all of your posts and "sprinkle in" affiliate links into the content.

For instance, if the word "protein" is used in one of your posts somewhere, you can highlight that word and turn it into an affiliate link for a supplement company.

You could also simply sign up to Amazon's affiliate program and link to a protein supplement there.

In addition to sprinkling all of your posts with affiliate links. You could also place Adsense ads into "hot spots" within your content.

You should build a mailing list too if you aren't doing that already. Even if your primary strategy isn't going to be "email marketing", you should still have a list so you can keep in contact with the traffic that lands on your website. The list keeps them coming back.
