Is Passive income Fake and Dangerous? Yes and No!

I read this article in Forbes and it was pretty interesting. I see a lot of people on the internet talking about how they want to make money through some sort of niche ebook and take a back seat and let the money roll in.
I have always known whether operating an ebay business to creating a blog and selling an ebook its going to require a great deal of work. I don't believe in the 4 hour work week, however there is a lot of great information in the book on some business processes. I more or less believe in the bust you butt and apply good techniques to satisfy customers and drive more traffic work week. I don't care if it 60 hours a week or 25. If you want the money your going to need to work hard to achieve it. Its a good read check it out.

Agree. 4 hour week is not realistic at all and it fools a lot of people into thinking that you can make it big with very little work. Running a biz online is the same as running a biz offline. It takes blood, sweat and tears to make it work. That article is definitely worth a read.

I am glad I didn't read that article before I set up my business; I have passive income from Kindle each month along with subscription monies from several magazines I publish as well. Not 4 hour work week but not 40 either as I do outsource some of it. Still I appreciate the point you are making. Nothing worth doing is ever super easy.

I can run my online business by investing just an hour or 2 a day so that's 7 to 14 hours per week.. 4 hour a week is for people who are selling dreams.

I like to put everything as a fishing analogy.

I'm a simple guy. Fishing is all I know.

    So... Is fishing passive food?

    Well.. Kind of.

You can theoretically have hundreds of nets, and hundreds of lines fishing for food.

But you have to find the prime location, determine what the best bait is, and also initially setup / maintain your net/lines.

So passive anything is possible, but it always requires at least some work initially.

    Just my $.02.

Back around 2005 I was working 4 hours every 3 months on my business, no staff, just some hosting, and a bunch of affiliate sites enjoying awesome SEO results.

It didn't last too long, but it was a nice couple of years off! And hell, it only took about 5 years to build it!

Yes, building Passive Income can be a loooong process but in the end of the day it is totally worth it! You have to be willing to work super hard to achieve it though... I'm still in the working for it stage

Strangely, I enjoy the starting and building stage way more than the lazing around stage!

Good luck, keep going, don't ever stop.

Most people will never earn a passive income because they do not know how to leverage their time. That is why the concept of network marketing is so popular, although I admit few people ever build an MLM business large enough to walk away from it.

Of course outsourcing has totally changed everything in terms of the number of hours you have to work every week as well. One of my big goals this year is to spend less time working in my business and more time working on it. I see outsourcing as a real way to do that.

I personally could never work just 4 hours a week because I love Internet marketing to much, but that is just me.

There is nothing "passive" about building a passive income. It takes work and discipline to build an income online. Its just like an offline business, but then online. You've got to have a vision, a plan, and you've got to work on your Marketing if you are to see results.

Perhaps the difference comes when you've already established yourself and you want to take a vacation. In a shop (for example) if you want to take a vacation for a week or two someone has got to be physically there to run your shop.

While when your business is online, you can check up how it is going just be logging on with your laptop.

Question: " Is Passive income a fake , dangerous, fantasy?".

    Answer: No

When you pay monthly on a membership site do you think the people receiving the money aren't receiving monthly income? That's passive income! Learning to sell the right products to the right audience can be very profitable and yes you can make a monthly passively and on complete autopilot that's no lie! The biggest barrier is what you choose to believe what's real and what's not, if you can believe in it you will find a way.

    Hope this helped.

    Matt

Good post everyone... I know that someone out there has a unique situation where they put in 4 hours a week and turn $50 to 80k. Its not impossible with the right structure and systems put in place (Employees, Call center automation, and Software). I run an offline business at the moment that I dislike doing. Its a business I got into when I was in college and I have literally invested 5 percent of my profits back into my business and my yearly advertising budget is around $4000.00 and I manage year after year to make 50 to 70k. The reality to this situation is however. I know the industry very well, I know my customers very well by understanding what they want to hear from the initial sales call to the service that follows and I understand where to put my marketing dollars. I do dislike what I do and this is why I am building an ecommerce website that allows me to do something I enjoy and can build rather than push off and ignore. The fact is its possible to put little effort in and get back a decent profit but eventually someone will come along that really enjoys that industry and beat the pants off you while your still doing the same 4 hour a week marketing tactics they are doing 40 hours a week hands on bust your ass tactics and that will win every time. You will be wondering each year why your income has been dwindling until you find out the competition has been in town sniping your clients.

I agree with Mathew J but still hard work is necessary to reach there. I am working some 12 + hrs with breaks in the middle. My fingers are hurting i can hardly use them and I think I am progressing.

Normally I put my money in hyips but they don't last long and I often lose my money there. So I stick to network marketing especially via YouTube videos where each video can create income for life. Of course each video needs to get ranked in the search engine.

Work, knowledge, and lots of it. Plant your seeds now, maybe reap the rewards later. I was doing 16 hour days, but enjoyed it. It was a hobby, so not really considered work, Reaped the rewards, but it takes time.

It looks easy for Lebron James to fly through the air on game night, but we never got to see the thousands of hours in the gym and the court to get to that level. The same is true for success online; it's only "passive" if you put the active action into learning or investing $$ upfront into projects.

The words ‘passive income’ are beautiful, and this is why many people use them.

Nothing is totally passive, and in the beginning you have to work very hard building a regular income stream. It can become passive after a lot of work and the perfect organization, but it always needs something.

You cannot completely abandon this income stream and let it work by itself after building it if you want to increase your earnings, beat the fierce competition, keep your business updated with the last discoveries, etc.

I know what your saying. I spend sometimes 10 hours a day writing a social media plan for a business I'm going to launch. I really think its possible to have a 4 hour work week but your going to pay for your missing labor hours then by hiring that staff to replace you. I really thing that's what Tim Ferriss mean by this strategy. You here a lot of these 4hour work week guru's talk about only working 4 hours but they are constantly blogging, youtubing, facebooking, tweeting, instagrami ng, and maintaining a website, and guest speaking appearences. Its obvious that takes a lot longer than 4 hours. These guys are smart they know what they are doing, who there customer is, and what makes them bite. These are not bad guys they are business guys and very successful at that. Im not knocking them for making there money but I can see how some people would chase a dream that will never amount to much more than a dream. Theres enough money out here for all of us but the hardest and smartest workers will get most of the pie.

I think once you have been doing it for a while, certain parts of your business can be "passive" to a degree. For example, you might work for 2 years building something up and then be able to take a couple of months off. It is generally passive in the sense that you have made something of quality and people like it. There are some internet projects that I started in 2002 that are still making money for me with little attention needed now, but they still need some TLC sometimes, and I put a lot into them over the years.

Adsense Income is about the easiest form of Passive Income on the Internet.

Then again, after a period of time the Search Engines can raise havoc on your little 'Passive Income site' and the Adsense dollars can dry up.

I and many others have been in this boat.

Eventually very few things in business remain totally passive over time.
