Why Google Chrome Will Be The Best Internet Browser Ever

Google made it.

I just had to make a Chrome thread after seeing the others!

But seriously though, as I've mentioned in another thread, I tested the speed of the new browser. Google Chrome was faster than IE and Firefox. I noticed the difference before I tested. I guess the reason why is because Chrome processes javascript more efficiently... and it was programmed by Google.

There are bugs now but they will be cleaned out. I believe I read that Google launched Chrome early because information about it was leaked about it.

As far as privacy goes, you have an option to send Google information about your usage to improve the product. Just don't check it if you don't want them to see what you're doing! It's simple.

I tried to install the Google Toolbar but it wouldn't work. I don't think they'll release Toolbar for the new browser. I do think they might incorporate parts of it into the browser in future updates.

Threat to IM? I don't think so. If there is, I am sure we can conform.

I think Google is a great company with a diverse set of products. They have so much money to throw at many different ideas, it can only continue to benefit us.

    Google has a lot to compete with. Specifically, the huge amount of addons in Firefox.

    But I suspect there is something else going on we don't know about. They would not invest money in something that doesn't somehow mesh with other services in a unique and different way.

    For example, now they can program Adwords ads to appear within the browser's skin. They can also start tracking our movements even closer. Think about it. They own Adsense, Adwords and Google Analytics. And now they're putting out a browser. That's a pretty powerful suite of products. All that's left is providing some sort of Apache/IIS solution to power the servers.

      No matter what they do it will benefit the user. They wouldn't be so successful if their product didn't benefit the user. Google paid $56 million just to have their search engine set as default in Mozilla Firefox! I believe that accounted for something like 85% of Mozilla's income.

      I'm sure that tactic got a lot of people to use their search engine (probably switched a lot of people over) which in turn generated profits from their contextual ads. Since I've had Firefox I haven't changed my default homepage. It still goes to the Firefox branded Google search page.

      With so much cash sitting in their bank account, why not try to take over the browser market?

      As for the addons, I believe that the ability might already be there waiting for developers to make them or it will be added in an update.

            People are predicting a 15%-20% market share in a year I think. I believe Firefox is there right now which took Mozilla years to achieve.

              You're right Josh, but that's why they also own YouTube!

              Also, based on that article, the stats are based on sites visited using the browser,
              not based on downloads.

              According to Net Applications, which is tracking Chrome's hourly numbers, Google's browser jumped from zero to 0.4% during the hour it was released yesterday. Nine hours later, at midnight EDT, Chrome accounted for 1% of the browsers used to visit the 40,000 or so sites that the company monitors for clients.

              As Vizzaccaro noted, Chrome peaked at 1.48% early today -- at 4 a.m. EDT, 1 a.m. PDT -- and as of 11 a.m. EDT held a 0.98% market share.

              There are independent companies that measure market share by tracking what browsers people are using to visit their clients' websites. It has nothing to do with how many times Chrome was downloaded.

                I am still waiting for Chrome to support firefox like extensions, like firebug, delicious, and my favorite AdBlock Plus.

                Besides that I really like it.

                It runs faster and takes less screen real estate.

                  Ok, I just finally got my main computer back to normal by re-installing windows, etc.

                  I installed Google Chrome, and WHOA, I can't remember the last time I browsed the net
                  this fast. Plus, with Firefox, Gmail sometimes took ages to load, now it loads in a few
                  seconds. The verdict is in for me, I love it, and it's now my default browser.

                  I just hope they can get the Firefox like plugins asap!

                  Bye bye IE, and soon Firefox.

                          I just tested IE 7, Firefox, and Chrome, and Chrome is BLAZING FAST, I'm so amazed,
                          that I don't even care that the other plugins and goodies aren't there right now.

                          Firefox crashed a lot for me lately, IE I stopped using long ago, I think long term
                          Chrome is going to capture a bigger market share than Firefox.

                          Mind you, I've only been using it for a whole 15 - 20 minutes now, so we'll see ...

                            Another issue are the security holes... I will wait for Google to plug them before I will use Chrome again... I guess in the move for simplicity they overlooked a few known security exploits Apple had to deal with that have already been plugged by Safari ;-)

                                  Well I wasn't planning on installing Chrome today but all this talk got me curious and wow - yes it really is fast!

                                  I've only tried it for a few minutes, but as first impressions go I'm impressed! If there aren't too many bugs then I could see myself using this on a regular basis for general browsing.

                                    I read the above-mentioned article with interest:

                                    ...and it left me wondering how they measured the "end cpu" thing that they talk about as a bad thing, and if their findings were valid.

                                    Here's why...

                                    As someone who has programmed many Windows applications, the CPU and memory usage numbers shown in the Windows Task Manager are often not real-time values. Windows can be told to update them, and the values shown then can be very different.

                                    For one Windows application I wrote recently, I used to wonder why the memory usage as shown in the Task Manager seemed to stay at around 12Mb even when the program was sitting idle.

                                    After a lot of searching around, I discovered that it was possible to issue a call that would tell Windows to get itself organized and to update that list. When I issued that call in my software, the shown memory usage immediately dropped to a few hundred Kb. That value was the real usage at that time.

                                    All I'm saying is, don't believe everything you read - there may be more to it than meets the eye.

                                    All that said, I downloaded Chrome today with some trepidation. The new version of my flagship web-based application makes heavy use of both CSS and Javascript.

                                    I'm happy to say that it worked flawlessly, and very fast, right out of the box.

                                      Interesting info Neil. I just opened task manager for something else and noticed that there were 12 instances of Chrome running!!! It appears that each tab has its own instance, and since some of them were over 25Mb that soon eats up a lot of ram...

                                      Is this a bug or is this supposed to happen? Every other browser I've ever used just has one instance of the software, no matter how many tabs were open.

                                        I wasn't even going to download it. But I really wanted to see if it was as fast as everyone said. It is fast!!! Pages seemed to be loading instantly. There is definitely a marked difference. Hmmm! I am tempted.

                                    I'm not a huge fan of chrome, and I don't think Google's hand in it makes much difference in terms of its projected success, to be honest. Knols haven't blown up, I don't think Chrome will either really. :/

                                      Google Knol is still new... I think it's got some potential. As far as Chrome goes, I believe it will be very widely downloaded. Google does have to fix some bugs though. I know a couple of people that won't use it just because it's new.

                                      I can't scroll up on my touchpad... I am sure that Google will fix it soon!

                                          For those of you who think that having each tab running as a separate process is bad, let me tell you how great that is. I have been running FireFox for a long time. I usually have more than 80 tabs open. Many times, there is a bad egg in the bunch and the browser pretty much locks up my machine. It would be GREAT to see which process is causing the problem! Anyway, on my computer, FireFox uses over 1GB RAM, so it is a memory hog.

                                              ***** Google has rescinded an article of the user agreement for its new browser, Chrome, released on Tuesday.
                                              The initial agreement claimed rights over "any Content which you submit, post or display on or through" the browser.
                                              Google reworded the agreement on Wednesday, leaving those rights in the hands of Chrome's users.
                                              A spokesperson for Google said its user agreements were re-used and the initial claim was an oversight.

    there is a dll in Chrome which google only provides .h file, no resource code. What it does is decribed at below. Chrome will be the best? I hope so, but unlikely.

      This webpage can not be found, the home page doesn't work either.

      After a few days of using Chrome now, I'm still using it as my main browser,
      and Firefox as my back up when I need it for certain plugins, which isn't
      very often at all. As far as IE is concerned, what's IE?

      Yes, there may be bugs here and there with Chrome, but it's only been out a week,
      and I'm sure they will patch things up, make add-ons available, etc,
      the speed is what gets me, and why I use it primarily now.

      Gmail loads in 1 - 2 seconds max, which is unreal, compared to Firefox & IE of course.

      About each Tab having its own process, I LOVE IT!

      Firefox has crashed on me sooo many times when 1 tab hangs for what ever
      reason, ever since I upgraded to Firefox 3, it's been more problematic then
      previous versions, just in my experience of course.

      So for now, I'll stick with Chrome, and wait for new additions to come.

      Hopefully, plugins & security patches will come sooner than later, then it will
      truly be game over for the other browsers, Google has deep pockets, and I'm
      sure they will continue to upgrade, and aim to dominate the browser market.

      Love or hate Google, they always seem to make innovative useful products
      for the end users, and that's what matters.

But one thing which I really like about Google is they launch their product in lab section and from their they want to get the advice and suggestion from all around the world and finally they launch it.

    Just wait and watch these Google people really know how to turn table to their side.

      I personally Love Chrome. the only problem I am having is that if I am in a separate tab or window and there is a video playing and I click x out and it hangs sometimes it either takes a while to close that window or it just freezes up.

          You might be right about that! They definitely have the market research abilities. All they have to do is find out what people want in a browser then offer it in a nice, simple, and easy to use design (which they have).

          Now it's about researching the user habits of people that use the browser and fixing bugs. The improvements will come after that.

      Their product launch process is kind of funny. Gmail is still in beta! How many years has it been? It's a good process though.

      I tried Chrome this weekend and I was amazed at how fast it is. It is also clutter-free. In doing some reading I found that Google is big into web based applications, which appear to be the future of computing. Chrome is designed to handle multiple web based applications simultaneously. If an application hangs up and crashes, only that tab will shut down, not your entire browser and all of your open applications.

      I think Chrome will take the browser world by storm after they work some of the bugs out.

    once upon a time, people said: netscape owned the internet. Then, people said: yahoo owned the internet. ....

    from search technology point of view, google search results are still far away from satisfying although it looks better than others. there is still lots of space for improvement.

    I donot think after another 5 years, there is no another SE company that can compete with google. If that is the case, it is not a good thing to the internet.

    The main issue that has people annoyed with Google is the adblocking feature. In a normal browser the broswer blocks adverts from loading so advertisers are not charged for the display on CPM schemes or the CTR rate is effected on CPC schemes. Withh the Google browser it loads the advert but hides it so you cannot see it. This means the advertiser is charged but you do not see their ad.

    People are speculating Google handled ad blocking this way to damage competing advertising networks. Although I'm sure they wouldn'y do that lol

      I never looked into it or heard about. I don't know the details about the feature. If it is true, I imagine there are laws against this type of practice. Seems like fraud to me if Google intentionally did it to bring down the competition.

      There are antitrust laws protecting against a monopoly in the United States. Remember what happend to Microsoft? They were almost forced to exclude Internet Explorer from Windows.

    1) Chrome is not really a new browser. They took the open source WebKit rendering engine you may already know as Apple Safari (available for Mac and Windows) and threw it in a pared down window. Not only that, but they took an old version with security holes in it.

    2) Chrome's claim to speed fame is its JavaScript engine, but Firefox 3.1's TraceMonkey engine is just as fast.

    3) Internet Explorer 8 beta had all the privacy features of Chrome first. Google just copied them.

    There's nothing new or innovative at all about Chrome, and it's missing essential functionality for a browser. It's crap.

      A browser has one primary feature: Web browsing capability! One of the advantages Chrome has over others: Speed.

      I like Chrome but there are a couple of bugs that need to be taken care of. I also wouldn't mind some extra features!

          I did run a few tests on various "web browser speed test" sites... Chrome came in first every time.

          I had one problem with Chrome: My laptop touchpad would not scroll up, only down. They fixed it with an update a couple weeks ago. Everything seems to be smooth now, faster even.

    I give Google credit for a lot of things they do but I am forever a Mac guy and considering all the problems with Windoze, I have no interest in changing platforms just for a browser. Hopefully they will come out with a Mac version soon.

    Currently, I use Firefox and love it. Sometimes it does "freeze" up on me but that's usually due to having too many tabs open.

    Waiting patiently.

    "Public betas" that last for 5 years at a time aren't betas. Google is just giving themselves something to point at when someone finds major security flaws in their software... "yes, people stole your personal information and destroyed your computer, but the risk was yours because it says beta!". That despite advertising it to everyday users on the third most popular site on the web.

    Google Chrome has a lot of room to grow, and a number of bugs that need to be squashed before it can really make it big. It is fast, and that is a big benefit to Chrome. As for success, it is the default browser in Android, it will almost certainly be an aggregate point for other Google apps, and since it is Google it already has a good chunk of publicity.

    Others who like things the way they are will keep what they have.

    Google Chrome has some advantages, but IMHO it survives mainly based on the Google name.

    The world did not need another web browser. What the world needs is a new architecture underneath the web to drive home the features people now want but what the web was not really designed to do well... namely the explosion of Web 2.0 technologies and the Online Application. Everyone is trying to get this right, and nobody has yet. And the reason I think so is because the web wasn't really made to do these things we are trying to make it do. There needs to be a Web App OS- a good computer interface to accessing Web Apps from the desktop without the need of a web browser.

    Regardless, the introduction of Google Chrome is to me somewhat unsettling. Up until now, Google has been content with the "do no evil" slogan. Sure they've opened a ton of new subtopics, like product and news search. But basically they've been pretty good about making useful stuff in areas where nobody really had a great solution (in terms of information management.)

    But now things have changed. Google now feels they have enough clout to introduce a web browser on their own, even though the browser market is already crowded. In this case, they are not trying to make a better solution, what they are trying to do is get the Google name in front of people. This is a fundamental shift in the way Google does things. And it's not good.

    Will we see the Google OS next? Because I think that's where they're going. They want people to be using Google apps all the time, and getting them on the desktop is the most logical choice.

    Please Google, partner with apps instead of trying to bypass them. Imagine what would happen if Google teamed up with Apple to get great Web Apps on the desktop. Yahoo partnered with Microsoft, why not Google and Apple, two of the hottest tech companies out there right now? Google do the online stuff, Apple do the offline stuff. It would rock.

    It saddens me when I think about how many people are still using IE because they don't know any better. Hopefully they will try out Chrome and get off the MS crap.

      I think as google expands there will be a "microsoft effect" where people will start to become a little worried at google's expanding empire with their hands into everything.

      I don't remember the links to them, but there are some european countries making announcements to their people to not use chrome cause google will have too much information.

        Only that they copied most of firefox's features because they knew they were getting left behind.

        Me personally I don't understand all the online app hype. For communication/collaboration (like your friends and myspace), it makes perfect sense. Other then that, it seems to me nobody seems to care too much about the huge privacy issue of dumping all your created content online.

        No matter how "good" google is, the fact remains that it's my stuff on their servers, not on my own machine. In the push to get users to create their own content, people seem to have lost the fact that published stuff out there in the wild is no longer under your personal control. I don't WANT employers googling my name and finding out crap about me I didn't authorize. Nor do I want to spend every waking moment trying to control my online "identity". Everything online is under a HUGE microscope by people just looking for some little flaw to bitch about, and it's not worth the effort it takes trying to correct those people.

        I think at some point people are finally going to realize they got duped into the online app fad. But then again, I didn't grow up with myspace and american idol. (I'm in my early 30s)

    Just like you said, they have a lot of bugs to work out...

    I tryed to use there browser for a few hours but with somw websites not exepting it, it drove me crazy!
    Im looking forward to when they get all those bug figured out though... It looks great!

    Seen a couple of my friends used it, never got interested because to me it looked too simple. Maybe I'm just used to Firefox and all the plug-ins.

    Reading this thread might make me try it, though, for the speed.

    Oh, and am I the only one who misses Netscape Navigator? (RIP)

      The touchpad didn't scroll up for me before but now it does.

      I recommend clicking on the wrench then clicking "About". It should tell you if there is an update available.

      This is what fixed my scrolling problem!

    Chrome is THE best browser now IMO... I stuck with it since it first BETA'd but it WAS buggy. I used to have to open FF or IE occasionally to do some stuff.

    Now it seems rock solid. I only ever open the others to check sites display properly in them.
