Have reseller hosting, don't know what to do with it

I actually have a reseller hosting plan (that host my main blog, my personal website, and also helping out a few friend's websites for free)

I was thinking to resell hosting but I changed my mind. I'm sure it'll require a lot of support and other headaches. So at the moment I still have lots of space+bandwidth to allocate, but I don't know what to do with it.

I've been blogging for years so I thought of just opening up small blogs of different niche and hire writers to grow them. Don't know if this is profitable in the long run as it's hard to rank nowadays anyway.

Any other suggestions as to what I should do with a reseller hosting plan lying around?

With unlimited domain hosting, it would be wise to test different marketing methods from different domains to see what works unless you are tired of paying for resell hosting.

If you plan to have multiple sites, a reseller plan is the best option to keep them separated. With resellers, or at least how we do it, we'll provide support to "you" even if it's a resold account. It's your customer that we/other companies wouldn't provide direct support to..hope that makes sense.

But again, having separate accounts for your sites is always the best for both performance & security reasons.

I disagree. Unless you intend to do a LOT of reselling, dump it and just get a baby plan. Much cheaper and you can do everything you've described above.

it really depends on how many sites you have and what bandwidth/space they take up. You can go back to shared but for me the price for shared accounts with enough perks was more expensive than keeping the reseller account for my own sites. I suggest a cost comparison and a real look at what you are doing and see if hosting for you is worth the price you pay for the hosting. I host like 10 money sites on my reseller account and having a reseller saves me a few dollars in hosting and keeps everything separate by panel and IP addresses so it is much easier for me to keep track. YMMV

Well it's true that if I cut off all my website (and friends') and change them to a Baby/Hatchling Plan, it'll be cheaper. I went to a Reseller just so that it would be easier to manage them all and could also help some of my friends out if they want to try blogging and stuff in the future

Trying to build 1 (and maybe more) Amazon products review site, though I guess everyone else is doing it. I thought of going for hosting reselling but after thinking about it again, I don't want to waste time answering support and emails

If you're going to continue to add sites, I'd strongly recommend sticking with the reseller account to keep them separate. Addon domains are eh, ok however, if one gets compromised (hacked) every site on the account is vulnerable since they're all under the same system user. Most of the time, this happens, then the host gets the blame, when that's not the case.

It's probably better to keep the reseller, that plan is probably bandwith limited, and also probably not as oversold as the "unlimited" is and you probably get better response.

Which host is the reseller hosting purchased from?

...Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just set there.

It's HostGator. I have a separate unlimited Hatchling plan with them on my main site for 5 years and really happy with their service

Getting a new domain is pretty cheap anyway (like $10-ish a year) so that's the only expense (apart from time, obviously) for setting up a new site

Outsource it. No more headache but still profitable for your reseller hosting.

There are a lot of people selling hosting on Ebay and Fiverr, take a look there

It sounds to me like you are letting the web space drive your business plan instead of you driving your plan.

I mean that you don't HAVE to do anything with that extra space as long as paying the bill isn't a problem.

I think it wouldn't be wise to go buy a bunch of domains, set up blogs, set up review sites or whatever just because you have this space available.

However, if your overall plan includes setting up and trying out some blogs or review sites or whatever it's great you happen to have the space available.

    Hope that makes sense.

As others have mentioned and I did check this with my new hosting company, recently moved from Hostgator, one advantage of a reseller account is the increased site portfolio security.

With shared one hack get them access to all of your sites, with reseller they need to hack each site individually.

As long as you can afford the slightly higher fees of a reseller, stick with it as it also gives you an insight into what is involved in managing a server should you ever have to upgrade to a dedicated server.

As you mention helping other people then giving them temporary hosting on your account makes sense to get them started then sell them as a hostgator affiliate their own baby or other hostgator account.

If I didn't need reseller hosting, I wouldn't pay the extra money for it just so I could give it away to friends. I had it some time ago and dumped it for a Hostgator plan with "unlimited domains."

    Here are some ideas:

    1. Just use it yourself.
    2. Reseller hosting (perhaps for a certain niche)
    3. Give hosting away in competitions to build a list
    4. Partner with a web designer

Hope some of those ideas help!

If you can sell a few hosting accounts too you have free hosting for your own sites

Here is a great idea for you. Create a few sites with dollar domain names. Then sell them with free hosting for one year. OK so that will help you pay for your hosting service. Also, you can do an experiment letting people create content for you. Most hosting plans under deliver and over promise.

I disagree with that. I thought the baby plan just allowed you to have add-on domains which are completely different from having separate domains on a reseller account. Even now some scripts will not work on an add-on domain due to confused relative URL paths.

If you want separate, individual domains then a reseller is the best way.
