500th POST... Here's My Biggest Mistake

I started out in 2005 and made zero money for about
5 months. I spent hundreds on courses and still nothing.

Then I invested just $2/day into buying traffic and made
$300 that month. I took half of that and re-invested it to
up my budget to $5/day.

Same thing next month... Took half and reinvested. I now
spend around $3,000 per month on various things that
bring more traffic to my sites.

For example: PPC, CPV, Banners, Affiliates, and my assistants
that do my SEO for me.

Now I make in 2 months what used to take me a whole
year to make (back when I had a J.O.B.)

So for my 500th post my word of advice is "Buy Traffic, Not Courses."

What's your biggest mistake?

    Hi Justin,

I'm a newbie and I started in Jan. Wish I had know of this forum earlier which could save me 2K. Could you please specify how you buy traffic ... PPC?

Well, isn't it funny who you run into on the forum on a Sunday afternoon ;-)

One of my biggest mistakes is not properly managing my PPC + affiliate income cash flow.

For example, I spend $500 on AdWords this month, while my PayPal or Clickbank account accrues sales, but I've still got to pay the piper (Google) when that AdWords bill comes due.

I recently tied my PayPal account to Google to pay for AdWords, and I now track PayPal balance, Google spend, and my net profit. That tells me what I can spend out of my PayPal account and still be ready to pay Google when it's time.

Simple to do, but simple not to do!

I originally started out with Adwords, but if I were to do
it all over from the beginning again I would start out
        with MSN or 7search first.

Adwords can be quite unforgiving and expensive these
days for a beginner. Once you get your bearings in the
smaller networks though, move to Adwords quickly.

What I meant is that I have a PayPal debit card (which helps me celebrate every little bit of IM income as it arrives ;-), and I entered that as my payment method in AdWords.

Thanks Justin. I keep meaning to get into paid methods of traffic. I am a writer and enjoy doing that for articles and SEO but I'm definitely looking into expanding into Adwords etc.

I guess I'm still a little nervous about spending money. A few months back I got a $100 adwords credit and I used it even though I know I'm not completely educated on the subject. I think I ended up making something like $65. It was nice to get $65 "free" bucks - but terrible to think that if it was my money I would have lost $35. The biggest mistake I saw that I made was paying too much per click and not having my ad groups small enough.

Anyway... you have clearly done a great job with IM. Congrats!

    Hey Lin,

It doesn't even have to be paid methods like PPC or CPV
but it could be paying an assistant to do your SEO for you.

Writing articles and submitting them or creating toolbars
and submitting them to software directories is not the
    work of a business owner.

They are great SEO methods, but they can be done for
you for less then $100 a week while you work on getting
clients or partners that make you thousands.

    P.S. I liked your LinWrites.com logo

    Lin,

The AdWords Content network has always worked better than the search network for me (and is usually much cheaper), but DEFINITELY set your daily limits and wade into the water gently, as Justin suggests.

As you know Justin, I am just unable to do most of the tech stuff. I then started to just outsource everything. My biggest mistake was trying to learn and master everything, instead of just paying someone to do it(and do a much better job).

Justin, what a great idea for your 500th post.

I have learned a tremendous amount from you, Chaunna, the Mafia forum and the 30 day challenge.

My biggest mistake when starting out was focus and follow through. I bounced around trying far too many techniques and following far too many people.

It wasn't until I narrowed my focus and set clear goals that I began to see success.

Another mistake I made was focusing on making money. When I was focused on the money it was too easy to get discouraged and want to give up. It wasn't until I shifted my focus to providing great content in subjects that I enjoy that I saw the light.

Putting off taking action - due to fear of failure.

At start of year took some action - and lived to tell the tale.

      Here's what I learned:

      1) there's no harm in taking action - provided you reduce the risks

      2) Use knowledge of the results to tell me what to do next

      3) stick to what I can do - making tools that do the job intended

      4) get help from others to do things I cannot do well

My biggest mistake was thinking I needed to master each step of the process before getting started. Now I am having success in the "Learn As I Go" mode and I am earning some money. Learning is better when you are getting paid.

  • I think you may give some credit to the education process. Newbies don't get the wrong idea that you can bypass the education process. I think what Justin is saying is don't fall into the trap of just buying courses and never doing anything. Have a process map for implementing things as you learn them..

I had made mistake of using Google adwords for Google search engine traffic and lost some $450+ dollars.

Later on I started using Google content network for advertising and recovered my losses and making decent profits now.

    Sure,

i do have good product with good conversion rate but i am not sure if such traffic will convert well. And what is well conversion for such traffic. I heard many times that they cheating in most cases, just bots visiting your site not r5eal visitors.

You join an advertising network like Google Adwords, TrafficVance, or Pulse360
but never those "100,000 visits for $19.99" type guys.

Once you are in their ad network they will have options for you to narrow down
what type of traffic you want. Make sure you only pick options that are related
to your offer. For example if you were selling "tomato growing secrets" then you
would want to target keywords or URLs related to "tomato growing."

I dunno where you could buy "niched traffic" but every advertising source will
let you target niche specific topics. As for sharing a result I've gotten I can't
share anything current or else every lazy copycat in the world will go copy it
and take my food off the table.

However, before I sold my website about Joomla I used to use the Google
Adwords placement targetting network to put my ads on the Joomla forum.

These ads were advertising my "how to learn Joomla video course" and I paid
about $2.00 for every 1,000 impressions. I would spend about $20 a day which
was about 100,000 impressions but I would make on average 5-7 sales of my
video course which sold for $35. (about $175 - $245 per day)

So far my favorite traffic buying methods are banner ads and placement targetting
but that doesn't mean it will be the best for you. Every network is different and
      every product is different.

You have to start small, track and test everything, and then scale up once it's
      proven itself to be profitable.

      I started out with $2/day

I use Google Analytics + Clicktale to see what people are doing once they get
to my website. Then I make tweaks to improve my site based on what those
tracking tools showed me. Rinse, wash, repeat...
