Hello, I've just joined and thought I'd offer a bit about myself before I ask any questions.

I started a price comparison website just over two years ago, aiming at a specific kind of product. Basically heading down the Affiliate Marketing route...

When I first set out, I had enough Photoshop experience to create a layout and thought I knew enough HTML to get started... But it turns out I didn't. So over the next two years or so, I spent a lot of time creating a website, learning everything as I went, coding it all by hand, HTML, CSS, PHP etc.

I probably set my sights far too hight for a beginner, and sometimes wish I had of tried something that wasn't going to take so long to finish. But I feel like I've come too far and spent too much time on this to leave it as it is. Not only that but I still feel it has a lot of potential.

The website consists of individual product pages and a price comparison for each.

So I started to upload each page as I went, and even though the site was unfinished, I was getting 10 - 20 hits a day through Google, for some long tail keywords. My bounce rate was really high but I actually made over £60 in just two weeks. (Not a lot by any means, but I didn't have to do a whole lot to earn it either). This is enough to tell me it has potential.
But then for some reason or another I dropped out of Google completely. Not a single page could be found. So I spent the next few months after that, trying to work out why, rather than just working on finishing the website.

I ended up doing almost no work on it at all throughout last year. (I had too much going on elsewhere), but noticed I was ranking a few pages again...

So November come round and I decided to go at it again properly. I've redesigned the unfinished website to something that looks a lot more professional, and i've also made it easier to actually complete, which wont be too far away hopefully...

This takes me to my question about paid traffic... It's not something i've ever looked into. How does it work exactly? Are there any tips? Any video's worth checking out to learn the process?

Also, would it be worth directing traffic to my finished product pages? Even though the rest of the website is unfinished? Or should I just wait?

Sorry for the long post!

The best thing I can suggest for paid traffic is to setup a tracking system, whether it's from your own server or a third party. Without tracking you're essentially playing the lottery every time you run an ad campaign.

This way you can do split testing and decide which ads are working and which aren't.

Once you find the winners, then it's just all about scaling up from there!

      Thanks for the replies!

I intended on using Google Analytics if I went down the Adwords route? Is there anything worth reading up on before starting? How much money would I need to 'test the water'?

You don't really need to spend an extra-ordinate amount of money on PPC.

A couple of good sites Ive used in the past are:

        Project Wonderful makes advertising awesome!
        Buy Ads | BuySellAds
Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Search Engine Advertising Network | 7Search.com

(I often use Facebook PPC as well, but this may be a bit pricey for you if you're just starting out).

As for me, logically, I think sticking with Facebook ads would make sense since that's where it's at, you tend to get the best of both, I think if one would really seek to understand it, t should yield good results, there is also Twitter ads, never used them, but they seem promising. It's a game of finding what you are comfortable with and test test and test.

On another note, I had not attempted SEO in depth, and I m feeling maybe that's what I should have focused on, I think you did well by building on that skill, because if you perfect it, there is nothing better as organic search traffic!

And lastly, on the question of whether you should keep driving traffic to your incomplete site, I am not sure what exactly you structured it, but I think the best way forward will be to drive create and drive traffic to squeeze pages, and have prospects on your list, that way, you can complete your site whilst you are generating prospects and possibly making money too.

My 2p :-) hope it helps.
