A Retail Store Wants to Sponsor My Website, need help with offer.

I have a review website that's been doing pretty well. I got a sponsorship offer from a big retail store. He's offering to supply me with products that I can review, but he wants me to sign a contract that I will send back the products after and not damage them. He asked me to write a blog post about our new sponsorship deal, and at the same time promote his free product give away that he's using to build the stores list.

I've never done something like this before. I really need product to review, but should I do this post for him even though I have not received anything yet?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What's in it for you? You get a temporary product, just to review? Is that what you want?

As for writing without receiving anything yet - is this person/company trustworthy? Legitimate? Where they'll follow through and deliver?

A lot of variables. If it's what YOU want - go for it. What's the worst that could happen? You wrote an article for someone and got nothing in return? Meh, people have lost greater things.

What's the best that could happen? You have a long and enduring relationship that results in a nice income.

    You decide!

So, on top of not being able to keep the products (so there's nothing in it for you), you have the chance to be fined if the product you send back gets damaged.

Write down the pros and cons and I guarantee you that the list of cons will be much longer.

I'm with NatesMarketing for the most part, it's certainly not going to cost you much and it could work out fairly well.

But, I'd do a little negotiation before I jumped right in.

    He approached you right?

This part I understand It benefits you #1 you have product to review. #2 it solidifies, that your reviews are actual hands on reviews. #3 all he wants is a post of the sponsorship. #3 again works in your favor as it pertains to #1 and #2.

I would actually mention the sponsorship with every product you get from the store. IE Id like to thank blah blah store for such and such product in order to write you all a review.

"and at the same time promote his free product give away that he's using to build the stores list."

He/they want you to send YOUR traffic to his site to sign up on their list? UH NO.

Do you fully understand what he is asking you to do? Do you understand what that is worth? This portion is a very 1 sided street, and it aint your side of the street.

Do you have a list? If yes that's Awesome, if no.. GET ONE STARTED TODAY.

Here is the deal... your viewers are YOUR blood sweat and tears, to pass over that Targeted Traffic, is just plain out STUPID. He couldn't and wouldn't pay for that kind of targeted Traffic. You want to leverage HIS free offer to build YOUR list.

YOU need to take control here. Yes you will post where the product came from in return for getting the product on loan. I'm good with that offer. But you cant send him traffic... You need to work the deal where you control the list, you send out the monthly offers. Even this is worth something, actually depending on the numbers a lot of something! This is EXACTLY how IM'ers get Paid. He is asking you to directly market to your audience.

Seriously DO NOT DO A THING, until you understand what is being asked of you and what that is REALLY WORTH

I often get email asking for guest post or/and review of certain product and they offer to send me the product. Asking for to send it back has never happen for me and it sound silly.
I always say no to these kind of offer. Why should I add guest post or review to my website for lifetime for one T-Shirt or jeans ?

      People read reviews on t-shirts?

"It was quite comfortable, and the sleeves weren't too long. 9/10"

He's getting your PROFESSIONAL opinion on his product ... for nothing?

    What do you get?

    1. The chance to review a product.
    2. X product for the duration it takes for you to review it.

In other words, hardly anything. If he's not offering cold, hard cash for the sponsored reviews, then there's something seriously wrong.

And don't even think about building his list for him for free.

Make him a much higher counter offer, or tell him to go fish.

Sounds great. You get to work for a retail operation for freeee! Love it. I'd tell them to take a hike unless the products were keepers.

Yeah, to me it looks like a pretty one sided offer.

Figure out what would be a good deal for you and counter-offer. It may just be an opening salvo in a negotiation. From their point of view, why pay when you can get it free.

On the other hand, it may just be their habit to make this offer to any site owner with a promising site. If you take it - great. If not - well, there are plenty of other fish in the sea.
