Right. And more page views for their stats.

Aside for ads, I think TL ; DR has something to do w/ it.. People are lazy to read long articles so they (site owners. writers) tend to split it.. Just my 2 cents doe. --

      Two reasons.

One, as has been mentioned, is more ad exposures.

The other is a lower bounce rate. If you go to the site, read an article on one page, and hit the back button, it counts as a bounce. If you view a second page on the site before leaving, even if you just read the same single article, it does not.

  • Wow! Good to know! I was just about to post a very long article on my site. Now I will know to break it down into multiple pages...

Not so fast...I'd say do more research on this before you act, but I didn't find these compelling reasons. After all, I said hope re the ad clicks and the others offered viable reasoning to make stats look better but not actually be better.

Jessiewriter is correct. Splitting the page may not be the right action to take.

Those big sites are usually on CPM deals, many with multiple networks. If you don't know what I'm talking about, go to one of the major newspaper websites and watch the status line in your browser as you wait for the page to load.

They get paid when the ad loads. They don't care whether someone clicks the ad or not, or even sees it, for that matter. The more ads they can serve, the more money they make.

The flip side to that is that the big sites lose a portion of their audience on the first or second page. If your intent is to have people read the entire article, splitting it onto multiple pages might not be the way to go.

The best way to know for sure is with a split test. The second best is to slip on your customer avatar and ask yourself, "which way am I most likely to continue reading" and go with that. Third best is doing what you see someone say on a forum without knowing why.

Also I would check your load times. Splitting an article into sections will lose some of your audience if the added sections show any appreciable delay. Really kills the flow.

If you're getting paid per impression - that is per ad display (cpm) - the obvious way to maximise earnings for a given number of visitors is to display more ads - which can most easily be achieved by splitting content over multiple pages.

According to the study mentioned here, Stress of modern life cuts attention spans to five minutes - Telegraph the average attention span is now only 5 minutes. To prevent readers from getting bored and leaving the site entirely, they break the content up into small, easily digested segments.

Multi-page articles bug the heck out of me. I will not visit that site again if I can help it.
But then again, I am blind, and use software to read what is on the screen. Every time I have to wade my way through ads just annoys me. I can generally find the information else where.
