Best way to deliver free product for opt-in?

I'm new at this, so sorry if the answer is obvious. I want to offer a free gift to people who opt-in on my site. It's an ebook I've just written.

What's the best way to get the ebook to them after opt-in? If I simply direct them to a page to download, anyone could bypass the opt-in and get it once they know the url, right?

Or should I have them opt-in first to view the site? I guess I'm not really sure where best to place the opt-in. Any help is appreciated.

Do you use aweber to collect the opt in? If so I can show you how.

I'm in the planning stages now and don't have everything set up now, but I'm pretty sure I will be using aweber.

    1. Create an opt-in page. Like a sales page for your freebie.

    2. Create a thank you page with a download link on it (download), and a confirmation reminder page (confirm).

    3. Get an account with Aweber for your autoresponder. Set up a list and create a web form at Aweber. In your Verified Opt-In section, set the page to go to after confirmation as your download page URL. Replace the standard Aweber thank you page in Web Form with your confirm page URL.

    4. Copy the web form code from Aweber and paste it into the code of your opt-in page, where you want the form to appear.

When someone opts in, they get the page reminding them to check their inbox and confirm. After confirmation, they end up on your download page.

In this scenario, is it possible for someone to give the download url to someone else, who then gets my ebook without opting in?

You gotta ask yourself "Do I really care?"

If someone starts handing out your free report, be happy for the free exposure.

Of course, any time you write a free report, there must be monetizing links inside it or promotion for your own back-end product. You never just hand out free reports just for the opt-in. The report has a job to do. It should stand on its own, whether someone opts in or not - because you'll get a number who opt in and then unsub as soon as they get the report.

It's not just aweber, you can use GetResponse too with the same functionality. You can also get an unblockable popup opt-in form that you can place on a few pages of your website to get more subscribers. As Kevin says however, there will be folks who will bypass this process and get the eport/ebook directly. Hence you should have links inside the ebook with teasers that pull back the readers again to your own site (for example for a more detailed explanation please visit xyz.com blah blah). That way you may get more prospects in your funnel.
    Hope this helps.
