List Building for Beginners

Hey guys,
For the past year I focused heavily on my ecommerce sites and Kindle books, and 2013 was probably the best year I've ever had.
In 2014, I want to start building my list, and I already have a general idea of list building, but what I'm looking for is something that can get me started right now building my list effectively, so I don't end up spending hundreds on a solo ad that doesn't work, or run into any other problems.
I'm happy to pay money for an effective course or coaching program, and I have time as well although I'm a student full time.
If you have recommendations for products, courses, or free resources to help me get started (or other threads on this forum to point me to) that would be awesome.

    If you want a good course you can purchase my WSO hahahahaha (just kidding)

    What do you know about list building? 0? I recommend you before purchase a course or a coach program talk with google and learn a bit.

    What's list building about, the ways to build the list, what do you need (autoresponder, follow ups, squeeze page....?) and after that you can choose a good program.

    Doing that you can reduce the chances of get "fu**ed" by a "LIST BUILDING GURU".

    The one thing that hasn't been mentioned yet is to make sure to use a paid autoresponder right from the start.

    Many who have tried to start with a free autoresponder invariably want to get a paid autoresponder and lose many subscribers along the way.

      This usually stands for those of you in the IM niche. Mailchimp works great as a newsletter for other niches, and you can promote affiliate links as well, just not big blacklisted programs like clickbank.

    What I would recommend is signing up for a paid autoresponder service (recommended) and find out what your niche needs, and do your best to provide value to your list, and help them anyway you can and only promote products you believe in or personally use yourself. Of course there are many variables in the process but that's just a start if set up correctly you can have an automated business that runs for you 24/7 365.

    I'm not a listbuilding expert by any means, but this free resource seems like something that although not as intensive or probably as effective as the other things mentioned, shouldn't be ignored: Cloud:flood by ViperChill It's a free resource offered by a young guy from the forum who seems to be a bit of a n expert in the area (actually - do a search for ViperChill - I think he has a good WSO or two in this area.

      I agree with Dorian. I have been in internet marketing for a little over a year as well as a Chris Farrell member for that same period of time. He is one of the best teachers you can have to learn internet marketing and his membership goes into every facet of the business including list building. His videos are concise, simple and informative and his support staff are superb. I strongly endorse him.

      I totally agree but there are now many others who take you much further into faster ways to build your lists. Chris Farrell gives you the foundations while other marketers add the bricks to complete what you started.

    Bro you need to first think about what product you are looking to promote or what FREE offer are you going to give your subscriber that is important one.

    Build a Lead Capture Page
    Promote All the Good Information the lead Capture
    Join Up a Autoresponder
    and So on

    For quick traffic you need definitely Solo Ads, this will give very fast traffic and fast leads to get quick results..

    To start with, why not sell a PDF version of the book in your signature as a low priced WSO to start building a buyers list? Maybe you could have some sort of one on one coaching program as an upsell to make it profitable / attract affiliates too.

      Why would you want to? Direct linking from emails to affiliate offers is not the way to build an online business.

    It would be very unfair to recommend any one product as there are many good products of this kind being sold here at the Warrior Forum.

    So, take some time to look around and choose one that you find to be best suited to your needs.

    Keep in mind though – stick to the program – do not jump to another program after some time and think that the other one is better than the one you have – this is a surefire way of failing.

    Here my formula for list building:

    1. Build a small list (200-300 sub) with free traffic- it will help you to test and optimize youe sales funnel.

    2. Now you can start to buy traffic (solo ads or facebook ads work best for me)

    3. After you have 1000-1500 subscribe start to do ad swaps.

    A Basic Method that Works for Almost Any Business


    • Create a free product for opt-in (write it yourself or outsource it).
    • Create a squeeze page for that product.
    • Setup a series of auto broadcast emails for after someone signs up.
    • Get traffic to that squeeze page (countless free and paid methods).
    That's the standard method, but it's standard for a reason -- it works.


    The details of each step are really where marketers begin to argue. My advice is just to fulfill those first four steps -- only then should you worry about the details.

    There are many ways to build a list for free:

    - Youtube videos
    - Blog
    - Forum signature
    - Free mobile apps
    - Doc/pdf sharing sites
    - Free viral reports

    But it will take time. With paid traffic you spend money but you save time.

    You need a squeeze page that conversts well... and then a good free offer behind it, as others already mentioned, you can use a chapter of your kindle book....

    There are lots of good WSOs about list building, just search for that and decide for 1 or 2 products to go through... they all teach the basics and some tips....
    Depending on the niche you are in, I would do adswaps and search for at least 10 clickbank partners...so you can build your list for almost no cost.... to cover your click debt you can buy a solo ad from time to time....

    Happy to help if you have questions. PM me, or post a question in FB... List building is pretty easy - just make sure you capture anyone's contact information through an EFFECTIVE squeeze page before showing them your sales page. Voila - you have a list.

    Then begin communicating with your list. This is the harder part which takes practice.

    in the front of your target group. If you don't
    know where to find them, start out by using
    Facebook Ads. You'll be able to pinpoint down
    to your group.

    Getting quality email opt-ins is as simple as providing good content on a well branded blog with the offer of something free in return for there opt-in. Give your best content away for free. Building list doesn't happen overnight, but there are several ways to get free content in a potential leads hands in exchange for something free.

    Watching this list keenly because of my flawed understanding of list-building (perhaps?)
    I have a list of subscribers sold to me by a friend of mine who works at a microloan institution. All these subscribers applied for a loan with them.

    Now I'm thinking I get a clickbank offer (that they would like) and send a mail to these guys. Use a po box in the constantcontact account I have, and send the email from a noreply email address and we're good.

    But here, everyone is saying we make a squeeze page (and offer something??) and drive organic or paid traffic to it (promising the "something") and take their email and then forward them into your clickbank offers.

    So what's the difference between what I originally thought of doing against what's being said here?

    Hey Alex, you've put out a great question.
    There's a lot of very relevant information in the replies already. I'd like to break it down into a simple, effective system for you:

    1.) Create a sales funnel. Look this up, but basically it's a system that incorporates a squeeze page with opt-in, offer page, and free content. This is the life-blood of building your list.
    2.) Drive traffic to your funnel.
    3.) In conjunction with your auto responder, utilize email marketing to provide timely free content and occasional offers to your existing (and growing) list.
    4.) Repeat step 2

    I've learned a lot about this through Bill Hugall but there are a ton of great Warriors on the forum who can help. Find someone you feel good rapport with and get started.

    Currently one of the best (free) way is to use YouTube traffic, and have a well converting squeeze page. YouTube videos are extremely easy to be ranked if you know what you're doing.

    It's also very easy to rank FB pages, however, conversions will be lower, and it will be generally harder to send the traffic to the squeeze page.

    Do you already have a squeeze page set up? If so, Andrew Waring has a thread in the JV Forum, offering assistance in list building. Basically, it is click banking for beginners, as he provides direction and methods for getting clicks. In my experience he's a straight-up guy who is a pleasure to work with. It might be worth checking out.

    Lots of good advice for you in the previous posts. I would echo the idea to stay away from the free auto responders. I used one for a while and it was poor. I now use GetResponse. As you build your list try to make it a list of targeted subscribers, targeted to you niche. Also work to build a good relationshipo with them so they stay on your list. Do not just bombard them with sales offers.

    Yeah, you definitely do not want to just rely on solo's to build your list. To be honest yeah its fast and easy but as far as converting on the front end you can find some much better traffic sources. Please do not mis understand me. All you need is a landing page giving away some free valuable content to start building your list.

    You then monitize it with a one time front end offer to help cover your cost and time. When you can tie your free content with the one time offer your conversions seem to be much greator!

    After that you build trust by offering more free valuable content while recommending other paid products.

    Biggest thing I can say is about the "testing" that needs to take place. Just takes time but its well worth it if you stick it through.

    Make a squeeze page where people get a free ebook when they give you their email. Make sure it's something that people want... scout forums and blogs in your niche to see what people are asking about, and then write something to solve a problem.

    Also, be sure to use a paid email subscription/autoresponder to send follow-up emails to your list. Include free info in most of them, make sure the emails are always valuable to your list, and then throw in a sales link every now and then. Treat your list with respect and they will always open your emails.

    Lots of ideas here. But, building a list or lists have several moving parts.
