It depends a lot on your product. If there is something new you bring to the market, your press release can be a huge success, because its the fastest way to get into google top 10 for many keywords and also be listed on many interresting places. But if you offer the same everyone else is offering, it may end up with you losing money. Its also very important to make the press release look professional and word it properly, some people just write a boring article and then wonder why the press release was a failure. If its a failure, its never the fault of the distribution.

Your questions been pretty much answered but I will throw this out there prlog.org is the best place to submit free press releases based on trial @ error.

I used to write a lot of them on Fiverr but only do it for book launches now. I agree that PRlog is good - I also have a list of about 10 really good free ones - PM me if you'd like the list and I'll send it to you.
I learned everything I know from the books I got from here: Press Release :: How to Write a Press Release, Press Releases, Press Release Guide (both ones they gave away free and I also bought every ebook they have on the site).
I found this was the best and least intrusive site to learn stuff from. Their newsletter gives qualit ytips, yet I never got phone calls from a sales agent trying to pressure me into using them or anything.

Just the stuff they have on their site alone will give you a reasonably good grounding in how to go about a PR - they also have a free template you can adapt..
I'm not affiliated with them in any way, just really impressed with them..

I have used press releases for over 20 years and have gotten coverage for clients and employers (and myself) in national and local media. If you want the best results, target the specific reporters/editors at publications you want to reach and send a legitimate, news-oriented press release (there are plenty of resources where you can learn how/get samples).

You can use PRWire or a free press release service and may get some results. But it would have to either be significant news or a very creative and interesting angle.

I don't typically buy into doing press releases the way a lot of people here recommend--basically writing an "article" about your product/service/website and then blasting it into the ether hoping people find it and then visit your site. ALthough I'm sure that works for some people.

I'm interested in this as well. Would hiring people to submit the press release for you, could ever harm your website?

From what I know, the article quality is very important.

Links from quality news websites won't hurt your website, if the article is unique, google doesn't care about the value of the article, its just a robot.

You want to be picked up by more websites, so dont hard sell anything. Make it newsworthy. For example, if you were selling a make money online ebook, i would go with something like

Title: Economy Forces Tom Dick And Harry to Become Internet Millionaires

In the story, talk about how Tom turned to the internet after his boss laid him off. Talk about how he now works from home earnin more money and add some spicy hooks like "I was pretty suprised when i found out all of my income was tax free. In the end, i was making money on autopilot, and decided to make an eBook about my experience, and to teach others how to do the same. You can check it out here"

Subtle selling works best with press releases.

If you're trying to get your news into the press (well, wider media nowadays), you can have a good go at anticipating how successful it will be by looking at your ideal buyer persona, looking at the formats and channels of the media they consume, and then seeing if the places you are releasing the PR to are ones whose target market includes your key buyer personas.

And only when you've worked that out should it be time to actually look at creating a newsworthy story, investing in a really well-written press release with all the bells and whistles that make journalists happy, and from then on you can start testing.

If, on the other hand, your target buyer doesn't consume any of the forms of media that you send your PR to, then no, they won't be a good lead generation tool.

Making it newsworthy is a must. Remember guys, this a PRESS release, not a sales pitch. The amount of time I have spent in PR, and running a successful press release firm, has made it abundantly clear that many are to quick to confuse press release with article marketing.

Make sure your team are former journalists, so they can put their experience to good use for your benefit. It's all about hitting the right angles, reaching out to the most relevant contacts and getting meaningful coverage.

If you can select the right team, it can be one of the best uses of your marketing spend. Conversely, cut corners and you may as well stand on the corner throwing dollar bills at strangers!

I'm sad it took 14 posts for someone to make this point!

Press releases are for the PRESS. They're designed to give news outlets the what, where, when, how, and why of something that has actual news value. Despite what the gurus are shouting from the rooftops, they're not an SEO technique, they're not a clever way to hide a sales pitch, and they're not synonymous with article marketing.

I spent years throwing away press releases that looked exactly like what many of the people here are suggesting. My coworkers and I often joked that we should respond to the companies who sent these press releases with a rate card -- because it was obvious they wanted to advertise on our station, rather than add something of value to our newscasts.

Bottom line -- if your product/company is doing something newsworthy, a press release can be a great way to generate some exposure. If not, your press releases are going to wind up in the "round filing cabinet" (also known as the trash can).

Press Releases. if done right, can create a tidal wave of traffic and exposure to your company.

I completely agree with the above comment do not make it a sales pitch, it needs to be news. Many internet marketers do not do it right.

An acquaintance of mine, Mickie Kennedy, owns a PR company called ereleases (Press Release Distribution | Press Release Distribution Services). I downloaded his 160 page guide to press releases and it's very good. He also has a 1-2 week training series delivered via email that is free.

That's where I would go for the best info on PR's. I used this guide to help a friend write a press release and Mickie's service to distribute it. We got some decent traction on day 1. The key is being consistent.

Main thing, and I mean priority number 1.....Headlines.

We've been using press releases for some time; they work great as traffic funnel. Mainly, we use them for the search engine ranks (because Google likes to list search engine friendly PR on the 1st page when it meets certain criteria)

I've not tried it directly for the leads on the press release site althoough as someone mentioned, it's liken to the 2.0 of article marketing. (helps SERPs, search engine traffic + you get the benefit of syndication to niche related websites)

    Some tips:
    - Adding a social link helps
    - Construct a neutral stance that in a very light manner positively portray your interest (if you make it obviously promotional it's likely most distribution services will reject it)

We like using PRBuzz as well because they typically give some very wide and high quality distribution/syndication (stuff like PR 9 authority sites) depending on your niche.

    Business tends to work best.

Hi I can only add my personal experiences with Press Releases.

Last year I had some press releases written and submitted for me on Fiverr.com.

What happened was they wrote the Press Releases and submitted them without me reviewing them. Not Good!

So I wrote a press release myself and got them to submit it for me because they were able to submit press releases to paid sites like PRWire and PRBuzz

Just PRBuzz alone is for $299 per year Unlimited press release distribution.

SO if you are interested to put your toe in the water and test your own results before you roll it out, it could be a good idea to write your own press release and hire some gigs on fiverr.com to submit them for you.

Here are a couple of 5 Star rated gigs on fiverr.com that you could consider.

    Fiverr handle: smartwork2

Will submit in 45 Press Release sites including PAID sites like Sbwire, PRBuzz for $5
    in 6 days for $5

    Fiverr handle: d_seogirl

Will submit your Press Release to GOOGLE News, SBWire, PRBuzz and MyPRGenie Paid Webs for $5 6 days on average.

    Hope this helps

Press releases are huge now a days.

I have seen many use press releases both for their videos and sites to get them ranked at the top of Google. One way to supercharge your rankings with press releases is to combine it with the power of Google Hangouts, and your golden. Ever thought of streaming a live Google Hangout w/i a press release. Well I have seen it done and the results speak for themselves.

    Hi guys

We write press releases for our publishing clients as well as for our own book and audio launches. Let me tell you....the more that the writer knows about your project, the better. It is the CONTEXT in which you tell your news story that carries the story out to the media more than loads of 'how-wonderful-my-business-is' copy.

Writing a winning PR takes as much skill as writing an effective salespage....and you have to do it within a much shorter and concise framework.

My best advice is to do what we call 'newsjacking', ie crafting your news story to latch onto an existing news story that is currently getting a lot of press.

If you are launching a book about dog training, do a Google News or Yahoo News search for currently stories on celebrities and their dogs who are making the headlines this week. First sentence is built off the celeb news item, and then relate it to your dog training book.

The celeb name will grab the news editor's attention...and he could just possibly run your story as a related point of interest.

This is a CRAFT.....so you don't need a quick, ten-minute article writing service.

Hope that helps. Any questions, just hit reply.

This is a killer technique, everyone. Forget blasting a generic written-for-SEO-and-backlinks "article" press release to 300 free PR sites. Write interesting news (or get a pro to write if for you) and get it picked up by the high-traffic sites and publications that your market reads. The quality traffic you get will dwarf what you'd get from the other approach.

I've tried prlog.com or prweb.com, the one that's free, and it worked pretty well. They now require that you sign up with a business email and not a free email such as Yahoo. It's a pretty powerful service and broadcasts your press release to a lot of feed services.

Don't bother with free press release sites.

      1. They often host targeted ads, which use the press release subject matter to filter. This means they could be hosting ads for your competitor next to your press release and using your press release to drive traffic to them!

      2. It's an instant credibility killer. Most people won't do business with folks they've discovered on a free site. If you're as successful and your products are as great and popular as you claim - why won't you pay for your PR/marketing outreach? It just looks bad.

Did not have time to read all the responses, but here is my experience.

I use to own a comedy club and press releases were great. Most newspapers dont have time or the resources to fill up all they what to publish so free content that is written in a news/entertainment format is very welcome. The may change it a bit, but the marketing survives.

I am sure it is the same with most websites. Give them a good article that does not sound like a commercial and they will run it.

Press releases are a very good way to promote. There are multiple websites which specialize in press releases, and where you can post them. Just google it. However, you should make sure that your press release also includes the keywords, with a 2-3% density. Good luck!

It's important to note that a press release alone is unlikely to get you much press story coverage unless you are a public company or a very hot private startup. To get real press coverage you need to do direct one on one personal outreach (not spam) and build relationships with writers and editors at relevant media. The release can serve as a supporting document for outreach.
However, press release services can get your news out into Google News and Google, out to social media, and out to news websites (as a syndicated press release on their site but not likely as a feature story). So there can be both seo and PR value, but it is limited and you should budget it accordingly. If you are paying up for the expensive services it may not be worth it. If you are using a free service it may have ads in it or no links to your site. But there are affordable options that still get you in Google News and out to syndicated news sites.

As noted from ReleaseifyJim, Press Releases are NOT article marketing. I agree 100% with this statement. A majority of the mistakes that people do is that think that an article is a press release. Press Releases may look similar but have some key differences, most notably the tone and style of the writing.

Press Release distribution can take many forms, from paid online distribution to emailing/pitching your press release to media/journalists. You can also share your news on your social media profiles such as Facebook and Twitter. but be aware on how your position it.

A good way to distribute your press release is to do media outreach, there are resources available to get media lists. We have seen success for clients where we would pitch there story to target publications and would get a response from their Editor for more information. Its all about reaching the right people.

So depending on your budget, time and staffing, you can do this all yourself or hire someone to do it. Time = money so its up to you weight your options.

We offer a Media Outreach WSO program here in WF, if anyone was interested in learn more about it. You can look it up for more details.

As for your press releases, they will always be a fundamental step in any marketing campaign. So depending on your needs, you should always consider doing one.

As for including Contact Information, yes, its best to include as much information as possible. This will help lend to your PR's credibility and make it easy for viewers to contact you for any followup questions.

If you have any questions, please let me know. Cheers!
