Domain choosing - which is best?

Ok... this is just way too simple, especially since people talk about this all the time here, but I need some quick advice as I'm in the middle of making this all-important decision that can affect my entire future online.

I have my eye on a couple of domain names for a new PLR site and can't decide which determining factor is best:

keyword target or product target

Keyword target would be a hot keyword related to what I'm offering.

Product target would focus on the product rather than an exact keyword. (I don't mean actual product name, but general product category).

For instance: would it be better to stick to the keyword that most people are searching to find this product or is it better to spell out my exact offer (which will incorporate part of the keyword 'articles')?

I've read so many different opinions on this that I'm not sure which is best. Hyphenation is not good, apparently, but it would make my chosen domain name read properly. Without the hyphen - the 2 words run together read as something else.

Also, how much attention should I pay to the length of the domain name?
My choices range from 13 characters to 18 but the longer is more descriptive.

What's your view on this?

Thanks.

Sylvia

When I'm building a simple site that is purely
just for SEO then I make sure to use the keywords
    in the domain name.

However, if it is a much bigger project where I'll
be using branding tactics then I'll use a two word
    memorable domain name instead.

For example my main site is SiteFling.com but I have
many other sites like BreakfastBananaDiet.com that
are smaller and meant just for affiliate marketing or
    for website flipping.

yeah, that's right, for SEO purposes, use a keyword-oriented domain... it also adds up in your ranking criteria. However if you're building a brand or a flagship site, you might go for a domain name that is easily remembered by your site visitors and work on factors that will have your site rank rise to the top.

Hyphenation may be also be considered, but when at all possible don't use hyphens unless if needed on two-worded domains..

        Thanks Justin and ImmotnaMarketing

You both make good points. Justin, I think you are right about picking a name as a brand - unfortunately, all the good PLR ones that I wanted are taken. I've come up with 7 possibilities but since I want to offer more than PLR articles, I'm looking for domains that take that into consideration without turning into lengthy domains.

The problem I keep running into is that proplr beginnings read like 'prop lr' which I am trying to avoid with the hyphen 'pro-plr'. I already have 3 hyphenated domain names and people keep telling me that's not a good choice, so I'm trying to make this one non-hyphenated.

So that's what I'm trying to work around while still coming up with a memorable domain name that will brand my services.

I vote for keyword(s) in the domain. In my experience it always gives you a big advantage in rankings.

That's my leaning, too, because if I understand correctly, doesn't Google look at the domain name as well as the meta tags and on page content when deciding what sites to return?

When it comes to branding, however, I have to wonder about people like Joe Vitale who's domain is www.mrfire.com - I'm sure mrfire is not a keyword many people searched when he launched that site, although it could be now.
