how much to charge for SEO work?

I'm competent with SEO work but I'v never done it for a paying client before.

I have a friend who is going to refer me 3 people to improve their rankings on their sites. how much should I charge for my work if I am going to service them?

How much is your time worth?

How much value do they see in such a service?

How much difference will it make to their business?

A lot of people just do 'stuff' and 'hope' that it helps their business - The more you can prove what difference you can make - the more you can charge.

At the very least you should cover the cost of your time and whatever else you could've done with the time. (Opportunity cost should be covered)

    Don't sell yourself short.

If you really know what you are doing, then you can truly help a business succeed. You are offering a very powerful service, so really, don't undervalue it. Also, understand what the business will benefit, and base the price off of that.

How big is the business? How many new customers will they be getting out of this? Figure it out, then make your money.

It all depends on how big the company is
how hard are the keywords to rank for, and
what exactly do they want from you.

is it to get on the first page or just improve rankings?

What I would do is see what seo companies are charging for
what these businesses are looking for.

Then come up with a price that's worth your effort.

Ive spoken to many business owners that have gotten rip
off by some companies. badly in some cases.

at the very lowest I charge $400 per keyword for a local term that's
      super easy to rank for.

Then I offer them a continuity plan to make sure they stay on googles
first page( I haven't found the right price yet for that).

      hope this helps

That's absolutely right - one keyword may take one 15 minute mass article submission to rank on the front page for, whereas another may require almost full-time work for months. (Kind of an exaggeration, but you get the point...)

The time investment required - it's all about the keywords!
