Steady website with traffic: how to convert a warm lead into an advertiser?

I have a website with cheap affiliate day-deals on it: a steady 1000 visitors a day, 50% returning visitor. The CTR to the affiliate shops is about 40/50%. Besides that I make some money with Adsense.

Now I get several companies a week that contact me about advertising on the site. I guess this is a warm lead for a sales man, but i can't convert the leads into advertisers. I send them a standard mail with the options: join an affiliate network OR advertise with a banner based on CPC, CPM or standard amount of cash per week/month.

How do you (sales) guys do it? Do you have some tips for me. How can I make the most of money out of it?

You could immediately increase their receptiveness by personalising your emails.

    Write to the person.

Yes, give them the details but...

    Talk to them!

Check out their site... explain why it would be a good fit... relate their product/service back to a past experience of yours.

    Hope this helps,

    Chris

Let me get this right...you get an email asking how to give you money, and you send back a form letter telling them to join an affiliate network? Let me guess - the network that serves your day deals is two-tier, right? No wonder you can't convert.

Instead of handing them a menu, take a minute to check them out and make a recommendation. Initiate a conversation. Don't even mention the affiliate network. I'm still guessing, but I have a hunch those ad reps are simply joining the network and cutting you out - if they aren't just writing you off and moving on.

If that's too much work for you, you can create a semi-form letter to send back. Make some personal observations about their product, tell them how similar products have performed on your site (if you have the numbers) and make a recommendation. If you can't give them a rate for each option with possible outcomes and cost.

Oh, and expect these people to haggle. In advertising, no one ever pays the listed rate. That said, I'd take the minimum amount you'll be happy with for each option and double or triple it...

Well if you say it like that... i feel stupid now I'm not going to mention that option anymore! I mentioned it because I only have to put one record in the database and i'm done.

You are right about your guesses. Thanks for the tips. I'll use them right away!

Don't feel stupid, we've all been there at one time or another. Like the time I couldn't figure out why I wasn't getting any conversions on an Adwords campaign and found I'd linked the download page to ad instead of the sales page.

Instead, feel smarter than you were yesterday...

Personal 1on1 sales in the best for long term relationships. Find out what their needs are. Explain how your website can give them the exposure they are looking for. Follow up every two weeks or month just to touch base. Answer their questions. Emails and letters are great but you need to make sure they are reading them and understanding the stats.
