I chose Maxtor simply because I have been using it for 6 years with no problems at all. Safest device for my data

I'd be inclined to go with an ioSafe. Slightly above your budget - and a bit more expensive than the competition - but it'd protect your data better.

I have been using all western digital for years but I prefer their compact portable models and I do not like their software so I do not use the software that comes with them.

I have a mybook and about 4 or 5 portable usb externals ranging from 100-500gb the portables worked better than the mybook for me.

I have a western digital my book with one terabyte storage. It appears to be okay but the search time is just a tad bit slow. I also use the memeo automatic back-up program with it.

So far, both are working well. I'm not so sure I would buy it again. I almost bought a seagate.

Like those before me, I won't be answering questions on the specific model....

I use a small Maxtor One Touch (w/o their software) for daily backup and portability.

And a larger Seagate desk size for weekly back-up.

None of the above. I'd pick the Western Digital Element 1TB 3.5" external hard drive (model WDE1UBK10000N) for less than $110 with free shipping.

Another vote for Maxtor here. I have several Maxtor external drives, including the 1 TB, and they have never let me down. I have two clients who have also used them with absolutely no difficulty.
