Version of Adobe Acrobat to create PDF

Hello All

This is a question about software to create PDF's. I know about and have researched much of the software out there, so I am not looking for a recommendation of what software to use, I have a question regarding Adobe Acrobat specifically.

What is the oldest version I should look at to get to produce pdf's. I know they are currently at version XI and the newest versions are letting you add video to PDF's and other features, but, I do not need those features....yet.

What I want to be able to do is create nice PDF's with links and images.

Currently I have found Version 5 for around $10.00, version 6 for around $15.00 and Version 7 for around $37.00, the newer the version the more $$$

So, do you think Version 5 would be good enough??

Recap: In your opinions what is the oldest version I should really consider?

    What kinds of PDFs are you looking to create? You can create them with Word and Open Office. I'm not sure about Word, but I know you can make clickable URLs with Open Space.

    If you want something more sophisticated with more features, then Adobe is the way to go.

      I am pretty familiar with most of the options available. I was just wondering what is the oldest version of Adobe I can get away with. I pretty much want to be able to insert a nice e-cover and have clickable links

        Gotcha, I've never used anything below 7 and it does everything I need to do. Someone in this thread mentioned they use 6 and they seem happy with it. I've never used version 5.

      Adobe Acrobat Reader is free, the program to create and edit PDF's costs money though.

    You can use other programs to create pdfs for free. I didn't know you could edit pdfs...so thanks for telling me. But isn't it the same as editing a word doc and then generating the pdf?

      You can do that in Word (the newer versions) and in OO, edit the .doc then recompile into a pdf. The big versions of Adobe let you do a lot of things, so that you don't need two or three pieces of software open at once. Its good software, kind of pricey if you don't do a lot of PDF's, but the OP was talking about getting an older version and that might do the trick.

      Not it is not same as editing word file and then generating to pdf especially when your pdf has large number of pages.

      For example you have information sheet in pdf with 10 pages and you want to add /edit footer on every page then you will need pdf editor .Because converting to word ,then editing it and then converting to pdf is time consuming task.

      I do a lot of pdf editing work that's why i know how to do it easy way.You will need a licensed software or you can outsource to someone .

    I use Word 2007 and I am able to add eBook covers and have clickable links so not sure why you would want to pay for something to do this. It's as easy as 'save as' PDF. Maybe I am missing something.

    Just download CutePDF software and you are good to turn anything into a PDF document!

      Firstly Yes, Word can make PDF files. However it can not do so if you do not have Acrobat on your computer.

      I think its Word 2007 that allowed you to finally make PDF's without having Acrobat 'Professional' on your computer.

      Why is this an issue you ask? Well for those of us like myself and others, we understand the power of previous version of Microsoft Office. I personally have a computer that has Office 98. Sounds obsurd doesn't it? Well Microsoft Excel in particular then and today are 2 totally different things. As Microsoft made things 'better' they were actually removing function, again with Excel in particular the Macro function is ridiculous in 98 and non existent in 2010 or later.

      So to answer the OP's question, if you are using a version of Office prior to 2007 you will need to obtain a copy of 'Adobe Acrobat Professional' And I would suspect any version will do. On my 'dated' machine I do use Version X.

      If however you are using a more recent version you can use the free version at adobe.com UNLESS you want to directly edit the PDF file once it is created.

    A while back there was a free giveaway by Adobe of their Creative Suite. It included Acrobat 8 but I downloaded it to try out Photoshop.

    I found that Acrobat didn't work right on my PC which was running 64 bit Windows 7. I could open files but couldn't create PDFs no matter what I tried and I have been an Acrobat user for many years - so it wasn't that I didn't know what to do. There was no recent bug fixes available either.

    If you could get Acrobat 5, 6, 7, 8 or any version to work on your machine, it shouldn't matter. My first ebook 10+ years ago was created with Acrobat 5 and there's no reason it wouldn't work just as well today as it did then IF it would work on my current Windows. The only way for you to know is to install it and see.
