How do you know if a niche is profitable?

I have a niche that I am really into and know a lot about, but after doing some keyword research with Google keyword planner, I'm starting to have doubts. The main keyword I'm aiming for only has 2,400 monthly searches and a very high competition. There are also a lot of big companies selling the same thing. Should I find something else?

You can do a couple of things. First of all, look on Clickbank and JVZoo and see if there are products that are selling in your niche. Also, take a look on Amazon and see if there are books on your topic. You need to have people interested in your niche if you want to make money, so a lot of competition is a good thing. Lots of products= lots of interested buyers.

You need to research buying keywords. You'll have your answer in no time. That sounds like a lame reply, but it's actually what you need to do.

I have already found the items through Commission Junction. It is in the interior design niche. There are so many blogs and websites out there in just about every interior design topic I can think of not to mention the big name companies.

So do I need to go for lower searched keywords? Even the ones I have found with only 50 or so clicks per month have high competition.
Wordtracker (the free version) shows a little better results though. Which one should I trust?

You do all kinds of research and then you pray that your site comes on page 1 of you know who.
    All the best. Regards.

Test and see. That's the most truest form of an answer that you can receive.... rather than theories.

Sounds like a good niche. Use Amazon to promote products in your niche and you should make some decent money. Start small and test the niche, then build it up

If there is a market, meaning someone is buying, then the question is how much profit are you looking to earn?

A small market with big ticket items can be extremely profitable while a large market with inexpensive items may not be profitable.

So the question really for you is how much profit are you looking to create over what period of time?
