What's the WordPress Equivalent to Mobile App Develeopment?

I'm starting to dwell into mobile app development, and I'm overwhelmed by the amount of tools/platforms out there.

I remember when I first got into internet marketing, the only biggest issue was the technical of building a site, then I stumbled upon XSitePro which was a godsend. 2 years afterward, that's when I discovered WordPress by accidental, first only used as a blog, but now the main and default platform I used, even though I've played with Joomla and Drupal and other CMS out there

Now feel like I'm back at square one again with this time for mobile app development.

I know there are tons of platforms and ways to go about mobile development, but I feel like there is no or need to be something like WordPress for app development, preferably free and flexible.

I've tried AppMakr for example but I find it very restricting and AppyPie is just to reliance on their platform and the price is unwelcoming. Too me, it's the equivalent to building a website with Wix or online paid website service, without know about the power of Wordpress, or paying for some software that will send me outdated or won't be used and have to migrate everything over, like relying on FrontPage.

I have tried PhoneGap, which I found could have been the WordPress of mobile app development, it's free and open-source and has a solid community, but it proved to be way to complicated for the non-techie.

My question anybody has great advice on this, a simple easy mobile app development for the average non-techie joe, preferably free or just one-time cost is fine?

Thank you.

Man you're gonna be really hard pressed to find a free one. I'm sure there may be some out there, but you need to consider a few things. First, it cost to develop and maintain any software or CMS. If you rely on free options for your app, I highly doubt you are going to get what you want out of your app. Second, if you are doing this for your business then no matter how you look at it, you're gonna have to pay for it (unless of course you teach yourself to code). Finally, each platform (iOS, iPad, Android, etc.) is going to require that you build or modify your first created app to conform with their guidelines (such as size, etc). Good luck though!

    Hi Jason,

As you correctly pointed out in regard to PhoneGap, the free options are complex and technical. Unfortunately the beginner-friendly options are costly.

There's flex mobile - it's not totally free, but at least it's not amonthly fee, just a one-time cost (unless you do the CC). Personally, I've moved from flex mobile onto phonegap. It might seem to have a steep learning curve, but if you know your html/css/js, it's really easy to use, and way more versatile than flex mobile. There are tools out there to make phonegap more user-friendly, but read up on phonegap and the cli. If you can handle writing javascript, you'll love it.

There are tons of plugins out there, and installing them is wicked easy using the cli.
Also, there are several ui frameworks out there, which you might compare to the wordpress theme.
