How do I find the age range of my target market?

I am having trouble identifying the age group in which I need to be marketing to.

I am a fitness instructor and I offer a digital product in this niche online - I know exactly who I am marketing to with regard to body type, gender, fitness level, but not age.

Is there a way to find out this? I tried researching online, but unfortunately things like age don't usually accompany forum posts.

Does anyone have any tips?

Thanks.

Well children aren't suppose to start working out till a certain age for growth reasons. So find out the age and start there from that age range if your product is for all levels

I just looked it up it says the average age range of people who engage in sports activities or exercise is 15 and older. Thats a start.

What kind of fitness workout is it? Is it heavy lifting? Aerobics? etc. You'll be hard pressed to find people who are interested in a heavy lifting course in the older audiences but plenty of young men who would love one. And aerobics work well with older audiences.

If it is just an all in-general fitness routine focus on how intense the routine is. If its high-intensity market it to younger audiences, if its a lower intensity market it to older audiences. Younger audiences are more likely to try a high-intensity workout than older ones I'd assume. But you're the fitness instructor here so you'd probably know better than I would.

If its a workout that can be applied to any age group then its all about focusing on one one market and targetting it. For example, if its a "Go from 300lbs to 130lbs" course market it to people suffering from obesity. Then choose a certain group of people suffering from obesity This can be mothers who just gave birth, young people who are tired of being called "fat," older people who want to get into shape so they can do the things they want to do before they die, etc.

If you still can't figure out the age group find routines/courses similar to yours and see who's using it. Watch videos of it, look for reviews of it and see if they hint at anything and talk to people (personally message them on forums, etc.)

Make sure you narrow it down though to more than just age group, but age group is a great place to start. There's a million fitness products out there on the internet so when someone see's yours you have to convince them that your product was made for them.

I don't have any experience in this niche so I wouldn't know for sure, but if you have any more questions/want some advice regarding this feel free to PM me and I'll share you my thoughts/opinions in more detail.

That's all very helpful there, thanks, appreciate it.

I actually went out on the streets with surveys - I got some excellent feedback but it was difficult to know how honest people were been.

    Domain,

You just have to do some more investigating. I am in the weight loss and fitness niche.

Where I advertise tells me the approximate % of female and male audience. Also, the average age range and of course page views per week.

    Keep looking its out there.

The only issue I have with Quantcast is that nearly all the website URL's I have put in so far are not using it so it doesn't have much data on them.

    Hi,
I have been going to the gym for over 35 years. I see teens, young adults, 40 year olds and up to tver 75 yrs. of age, so, it depends on what kind of exercise you're talking about.I see all ages in spin and step. Everyone does weights. Body works is a little different. The younger crowd does body works.

Good luck with your research, I hope its successful. :-)

As mentioned above I believe Quantcast can provide you with the correct information. The specific products you are marketing have been purchased in the past by certain demographics and Quantcast can give you some of that info.

Gyms are so popular these days, that everyone works out, from teenagers to people over 60...

What I recommend is to market to those over 25, as they are more likely to buy (they usually have an income, a credit card etc.).

Teenagers and students might want the product, but might not have the money for it.

Can you pick a range and design your marketing copy around that range or set of ranges? Of course this depends on if your product can fit multiple ranges.

If you dont know the age range of your targeted market than you have not targeted your market well enough. What I mean is that you need to more specifically identify who you want to market to and how you are going to do the marketing to them. I may not be saying it well. But what Im trying to say is YOU decide who you want to market to.
