Would take the below very seriously:

    1. Email marketing
    2. SEO
    3. Don't rely on one source of income.

With all of my wasted years I probably would focus on:

      List building
      Copywriting
      Conversion

and the biggest one of them all...

Selling more than learning and buying.

Isn't that a little ironic as you wouldn't know what you know now if you didn't learn and buy?

I am still personally learning myself. But if there's something that I would change... It would be to have done more research on internet marketing in the first place. I wish I knew what I know now, but that's not a great way of thinking- that's the process of learning, and it means I'm going in the right direction.

If I personally have any tip, it's actually to 1) Act. Don't spend ALL your time learning, you'll fall into paralysis by analysis. 2) Learn. It's as important to learn as it is to act- you just need to find your perfect balance.

I know this isn't very precise advice but I hope it helps.

I actually missed one on my list. It's the biggest fail for me... The biggest lesson I have learned is...

To make a bunch of money online you need a PRODUCT this way you make 100% commission and you can pay others a portion of your profit to promote for you (Affiliate's)... That's how all the big are doing it.

When you sell a product or promote something most use a squeeze page. The importance of a squeeze page is to capture emails of people. This is list-building and this is best way to market because you market to a warm list of people who know and like you, that you can market to.

To create a product you need a sales page to promote it. So with a sales page you need good Copywriting skills. To get viewers to buy.

To make money with a product you need traffic, which is easy part. The hard part is conversion. Converting your viewers into buyers or to take a specific action. This is vital skill which I wish I would have known a long time ago.

And what I was saying about selling more than learning.

To make money online you have to sell. Spend majority of your time doing that. Learning and buying programs is cool if it helps you accomplish your goal of selling.

Buying like crazy is a mistake I made. It's called SHINY OBJECT SYNDROME. Don't get caught up in that. Buy only what gets you further.

Yes you have to learn to do, but don't spend your time just learning it doesn't pay...

If I am wrong please someone prove it to me...

Im lolling so hard atm. This is the strategy to failure.

There is even a saying for this. "Don't put all your eggs in one basket".

What would happen is site would either fail or succeed. Most likely fail with no SEO or Social, or being current.

Youd have a great site know one would ever see. Or a terrible site that know one would ever see.

      great advice

I think with regards to his SEO qoute, he means he wouldn't rely on SEO for traffic. So what if he did no seo, he may only have a squeeze page and simply use paid traffic to get visitors to it.

You don't know his business model, besides, what if google suddenly changed their algorithm and his site vanished.

To answer the ops question....I would start with one method first and make it profitable before moving on to other income streams / methods

    - Email list building

    - Content / Assets - create lots of useful, big, bold, beautiful, awe inspiring, smart, unique, valuable, meaningful content and assets that people will pay for.

    - Sell the content and assets to the list.

That is the secret to the whole thing, everything else is just details.

Focus on one niche site and build it up with high quality content. Screw the SEO angle, just write for my readers. Promote through largely free and evergreen traffic sources. Article syndication etc will help promotion for high quality link bait.

While that's going on collect leads through a nicely crafted squeeze page/ sales funnel and build my list for free. Not building my list from the get go was one of my biggest mistakes but I am happy I've jumped onto bandwagon now

I'd have to say focus on list building and develop a trusting relationship with your list so that they feel comfortable buying from you when you do decide to promote to them. I'd also recommend video marketing. Show your face and let your following hear your voice. It makes a HUGE difference.

Honestly, I've thought about this and I don't think I would do anything differently. I started making money right away and that continued to grow steadily. The only reason I know what I know now is the experience I gained along the way.

If I was going to do something differently, I suppose it would be setting up passive revenue streams earlier. Even with that, though, I only know what I'm doing because of experience.

I am actually doing EXACTLY what I would do if I had to start over. I have three methods of making money:

    Freelance Writing
    Network Marketing
    Blogging

If I had to start over, I'd write for others to make instant cash, while building up my Network Marketing team and blogging about subjects, while promoting Amazon Products.

Find the niche that has a high demand and low supply. I spent too many years trying to compete with a product or service where the competition was extremely high. I now specialize in providing websites and marketing counseling for book author's. Dan C. Rinnert's advice pretty much covered the basics but narrowing my niche made life much easier.

I see you are asking about list building and not getting much feedback.

The opinions you get here are readily available for free.

Do a forum search and read some threads, that will tell you a lot.

Do a google search and find 10 free reports on list building. Read them all.

Look for Facebook groups on list building and read the posts there.

By then you should have a fairly rounded education on list building.

One note on list building. If you do it, commit to it. That means treating your list like a list from the first subscriber. Don't wait until it gets "big enough" to do something with.

      4. Don't waste effort being an affiliate for any seller or business.
Well, I'll go ahead and be the opposite view point on this one. Many moons ago, I started online with my own product. Now, I sure wish I found a really good affiliate product to promote so that I could learn all the ropes, ins and outs, before spending all that energy attempting to learn how to build, promote, sell and fulfill my own service that I was offering at the time.

I suggest finding a product that you don't have to worry about producing and managing inventory and taxes and acquiring accurate shipping costs and packaging and managing pricing and processing returns and and and!!

If I could start over from scratch, I'd find some product to fall in love with and evangelize it full-time until I'm consistently making $20K per month in affiliate commissions. Somewhere along the way I could start building my product on the side incorporating what I've learned by promoting the affiliate product.

    Hi John,

You probably noticed that people here suggest you lots of wonderful ways to make money online. And they all can work.

The truth is it's pretty hard. You need to learn, you need to be consistent and you need to pay attention to detail.

Just follow the industry leaders, hardcore guys with hardcore blogs. Don't get distracted, learn the SEO tools (they do work).

And if you have money - start building a blog network. Then you can promote yourself

I would start with building my list straight away and set a clear target of daily subscribers I want for my list.

I would also launch a new low ticket product every six weeks. This will get you the best leads - BUYERS - into your list, and it's the fastest way to build authority in your niche.

Finally I would work hard on building my back end funnel - where the real profit is... Including middle to high ticket products, webinars and coaching. It took me some time to understand the power of a deep funnel...

    I would simply

    1. Choose a niche
    2. Setup a blog and squeeze page
    3. Create free report
    4. Generate Free Traffic
    5. Email list daily with value, affiliate promotions, and my own products while studying and experimenting with paid traffic
    6. Once I'm comfortable with paid traffic I would invest more money into a campaign and make it profitable.
    7. Continue to increase my traffic or move on to another niche and repeat the process
    6. Live happily ever after

If I were to have done anything different it would be to concentrate on one thing at a time.

Because it is so easy to get hold of information via the search engines and because it is so easy to pump your inbox full of yet more information, lack of focus and structure is according to my research and information the killer. Note the research I mention is good old fashioned openess from friends and acquaintaces I have met over the years and who have told me themselves. Overwhelmingly the issue has been focus, lack of it,information overload andrunning around doing several things at once.

Most people go through the 'info overload' syndrom at some point so if you feel you have this do not not be ashamed/worried just deal with it, be ruthless.

Additionally, keeping things relative is important. The number of times I have seen forum posts along the lines of, "I want to create a search engine like Google can anyone give some advice please", those sorts of posts defy logic for most of us, for obvious reasons. Don't kid yourself.

Have an interest in one particular area and just learn everything you can about it. Become an expert. How you portray that expertise is irrelevant, it could be via offering webinars, writing a blog, selling a product etc, but become an expert so that you have something to offe. If you remain humble about your expertise and are willing to help people as well, people will come to you and buy your services.

    I hope this helps.

In order to increase your "output," you must decrease your "input." I'm on a ton of lists, but I'm careful not to get roped into the sales process. Each email received is a time sponge. It absorbs your time and prevents you from producing. Speaking of time,... you either "spend" your time,... or you "invest" your time. Stew on that carefully.

Robert Kiyosaki says "Be the bank, --not the banker". Affiliates are often the "banker." They work their tail off for a commission while the bank rolls in the dough. So, be the bank. Invest your time creating your own product --unless (and ONLY unless) you have have a scalable, automated, and virtually hands-free method to promote affiliate products on a mass scale.

Those who focus solely on affiliate marketing are always on the hunt for the next "hit." Once the "high" is over, they're onto the next big thing. They cannot possibly believe in every product they promote, and therefore become poor advocates. Notice I said "advocates", not affiliates. That's because, with your own product (high quality product), your customers become advocates. And advocates, my friend,... will outsell affiliates all day long.

Think of the last product you fell in love with. It didn't matter if you made $. You told everyone because it rocked. That's what advocates do. They can't contain their satisfaction. Now, when you can turn that advocate into an affiliate, .... now, you're headed in the right direction.

If I knew years ago , what I knew now I would say put the greatest effort into list building. List building was valuable fifteen years ago and its significance has never faded. Over the years I have heard that advise more than anything else , and now I know it is for a good reason. The basics of list building are easy to learn and have become easier to accomplish with the ability to target FaceBook users. I recommend thinking of list building as a foundation for all of your business intentions,

I skimmed through a lot of the replies here but there is one common thread in many of them and it is the ONLY one that counts...

Create an audience of people that are interested in what you want to teach them. Or, you could tap into an existing audience.

Ok - call it "build a list" if you want. Call it build a fanpage. Call it build a remarketing cookie pool. Whatever. It is creating a large audience of people that are interested in what you teach.

    All the rest is BS.

Without a targeted audience that you can reach, you can't sell anything. Even if you have the best bestest betterest product ever created, it won't matter because no one, or a very small few, will ever see it.

If I started over right now, had no money, and had to use a computer at the local public library, I would begin putting up squeeze pages on free platforms and sending traffic to them with free methods. Without money, it would take a little longer, but I could build huge fan bases or audiences within a few months.

Then I could sell either my own products or teaching courses, or I could act as an affiliate and sell other peoples stuff.

The recipe for success in any business has always been the same.

    Get prospects. Sell to them.

I probably wouldn't have spent so much time on Content Mills on Bidding Sites (I assumed it was the only method of making money through writing). I only recently found out the real potential of internet marketing and Freelancing.

I also would've actually bought a site instead of wasting time on WordPress looking for clients.

Wow! Nice question. If I started with a right mentor maybe i didn't waste my time, money and effort. Many of us who are dreaming of earning online, started with a wrong system, wrong site, wrong program, wrong place to advertise and the most of all is the wrong attitude. In my case i started with the right attitude (not a quitter, determined to learn, putting more effort and time, etc) but no idea on how to do the online marketing. I didn't know the autoresponder, i didn't know the capture pages, i didn't know how to advertise online, in short no body guided me on what to do and how to do it correctly. But, even i didn't earn for so long, i know that if others can do it, i can do it too. Now, i know what to do and applying my knowledge from my mentors. My tips to newbies, take time to create your autoresponder. don't market if you don't have it then choose the right program or network that you will market then increase your lists using the correct capture pages. Everything will follow.

That's funny you ask because I'm kind of in the same boat. About 5 years ago I got to making a steady income on the internet. And just now Im getting back into and guess what, Im doing the same thing that I did before I lost all my accounts and it's working just as expected. Not making much since I just started again but Im..

      1. Getting started by making some money as an affiliate using free methods.
      2. Invest in an autoresponder, domain name and web host.
      3. Drive traffic to many squeeze pages at once while testing the conversion and edit your pages accordingly.
      4. If results not satisfactory in all squeeze pages try different traffic methods.
      5. Once you have a sizeable and responsive list either create your own product or buy plr rights to an existing one and make it your own
      6. Invest in sales software which will allow affiliates, OTO's and building of a buyers list.
      7. Set up your product on that platform.
      8. Email your existing (relevant) lists about your new product and invite them to promote it with you

      Im on step 2.
