Don't want to pay for mass emailer/listbuilding. Should I write my own?

I kind of asked this the other day, but I'll mention it again now.

I am interested in list building for a monthly newsletter regarding health issues. I do not want to pay for the tracking of the email or the list maintenence, etc. I can easily develop/implement one myself.

Are there any free services that can be counted on to do this for me, with no additional advertisements inserted or hidden fees, or should I try to do this myself?

Thanks!

I think Aweber is cheap enough and convenient enough that there is no reason to reinvent the wheel, unless you really must. And if so, you can search and find free scripts online since many people have attempted to do this, and does this successfully, hosting their own private autoresponders.

Most free services are going to have a catch. Either links in your emails or they are very limited.

As for coding it yourself. What's your time worth? Not something you could code in a couple hours. What about email tracking, testing or analysis? Do you know how to keep your domains off spam lists? How to talk to ISP's to keep yourself out of trouble. Obviously email marketing providers do more that provide a way to send emails. Just saying

Also, most services offer trials, wouldn't be that hard to build a list that pays the monthly fee's. Even at that, something like Aweber is like $20 a month. Sure alot cheaper than the time spent running/coding your own system. No?

LOL, If you are in here asking this question, you can't develop this yourself because you can not conceive of the costs involved nor the scope of the project. Pony up for a cheap getresponse account.

More often then not, free is the most expensive option.

I agree with some of the comments above, just because you can do it may not mean that it make economic sense.

If it can be done quickly, go for it but your time is more valuable in staying strategic not working in the trenches so to speak.

Do you want to make any money? Come on seriously, that's like buying a 4 door car and saying..."Oh, I think just putting on 2 of the doors will be fine."

Head over to Aweber and check that out.

If you are trying to avoid monthly charges, buy a program that has a one-time cost, cheaper than building your own. There are free programs that you would run it on your website. Keep in mind that unlike the paid services, you would also handle the spam complaints. MailingListPro comes to mind for a full-fledged mailing list manager.

Why not use MailChimp? It's free up until a certain number of subscribers. But by then you should be making enough that you shouldn't care about paying for services. It's a lot easier to use one of the established players than start your own from scratch.
