How can I make money from my maps?

I have a weird habit of drawing maps. They're not maps of anywhere in particular, it's all just made up as I go along. But a while back I started thinking that maybe there's a bit of money to be made from it.

Maybe I could sell merchandise on Zazzle with pictures of my maps on various items.

I think by now I probably have about 70, and here's a black and white scan of one of them :

And here it is again in colour, which I added in Paint. I can of course do a much better job but this is just a rough idea :

Is there any potential in this?

My partner and I are epic book lovers, and we often see maps like the ones you make on fantasy books (read: Tolkien, Feist, and Jordan). Maybe you can sell them to book designers, publishers and authors? Just a thought.

Further to the previous post (great idea by the way), how about making them available as eBook covers? You could also approach designers in the music industry because those look like they'd make awesome album art.

Hmmm, I'm thinking maybe I could make one for my own book (which is about guitar playing). I could have an island in the shape of a guitar, with streets in it, to symbolise a map of the fretboard.

I have no problem having my pictures used as book or album covers or as illustrations. The only thing is that I've never liked working to somebody else's requirements / specifications. I wonder if there's some way where I could just churn out pictures and have people choose whichever one they want, for whatever they want.

It is like any art. There is a market if you can find it.

It seems like something you would need to build an audience for but there is an interest in maps real or imagined.

Brand yourself as an artist who does fantasy/imagined maps. Create a blog/site to publish and drive social traffic to.

Social sharing is good. Find an angle for your idea. Maybe for each map- Name it, give a brief fake history with interesting events, note places on the map.

    Something like that.

You could also publish Kindle books of imagined maps. There is a market for maps and doodle books so maybe a map-doodle book would do well.

Build your brand with a few Kindle imagined maps collections and you could spin that off into t-shirts and posters from maps in the books.

Etsy is a good place to set up a shop for creative pieces.

It really is a unique idea so it will take a little brain-work to get an idea of how you want to model your business and monetize it. Then you'll have to work a bit to grow the awareness of what you are doing.

I would look at visual artists and see how they build their brand and get their products out there.

This is an Etsy shop selling imaginary maps: Fantasy Art / Treasure Maps / Imaginary Cartography by paintandink

I would do keyword research around map art and imaginary maps to see what is out there and where the traffic is.

    Google searches (I looked quick)

    map art 1600/mo
    fantasy maps 1000/mo
    imaginary maps 110/mo

Once a few people like your art you can sell prints, t-shirts, books etc.

Offer a Fivver gig: "I will draw a detailed imaginary map of your own personal world"
Basic map: $5 Then use upsells: Large Map: +$5, One color: +$5, Color: +$10, etc.

You could do that to start and test the market and get some designs out there.

    Just some brainstorming with ya.

If you can explain to us how it would work, I think there might be a small market in that.
I have a method that uses a map based on scales.

Can I suggest you take that link down?
Your idea is too good to let it be stolen by some unimaginative lowlifer.

All about testing the market, and see if there is a demand for it.

I'm sure you can sell it all over the internet; fiverr, etsy, ebay, etc.

Well onSubie's suggestions (above) surprised me. Apparently there's quite a lot of people who are into fantasy maps. I didn't know it was that popular. Just goes to show. Funny old world we live in.

Etsy is a good idea but that example seller isn't doing so well I.E no views since the 22nd. Maybe do a kickstarter instead? Books are a great sale on there many times.
