What was / is your muse?

I have been researching internet sales for around 5 years now and I feel I have a pretty good handle on it. I've researched drop shipping, affiliate marketing and blogging in some detail. I have also developed a few sites for friends (using WP) and had plenty of experience with SEO.

Ladies and gentlemen, i have fallen into the trap of reading my life away without actually taking action. I got a large number of AM products for review, but didn't 'feel' any of them. So they sat in my Inbox (and when I say sat......I mean sit!)

Basically my question is this......do you only sell/market/blog about things that really 'ring your bell' or do you pick something you think is 'niche' and learn about it as you market it, hoping the passion will follow? I have been waiting for that special product that I really get excited about, but those markets are (naturally) saturated. As a result I have never gotten started, because I feel my efforts will be sub-standard! I am worried that I will never start with anything, because I am unable to see the bigger picture and envision what 'might be'. I also think that the areas I like are so saturated that I would basically be lost in the ether.

Any thoughts gratefully received....

Keep your J.O.B. If you wait for "lighting to strike," you may be waiting forever. Opinions will vary. I personally, go where the money is.

but how do you get good content with something that doesnt motivate you, or that you spend most of your time researching and recycling content for?

I am happily employed.....have been for many years....which may explain my inability to start

It depends how you go about your business. When I first started, I needed to succeed to retire my parents so there is no such thing as "how do I get good content with something that doesn't motivate me"

It was more like "I need to do this correctly no matter what else my parents would have to work forever..."

Again, you need to have a strong WHY in order to succeed.

So what did you do? start with something you knew about? Or pick a 'hot' or 'rising' topic and research it.

Thank you all for taking the time to answer. I get that I need to get something out there, rather than nothing. I guess I need to brainstorm what I actually know about and pick something to take forward, putting everything else out of my mind until Project 1 is completed.

Pick something that earns MONEY. Preferably something that's unique and relatively exclusive to you. Whether it's 'hot' or not is irrelevant, as long as you can offer something different and put your personal stamp on it.

It's not simply a matter of just "getting something out there". If it were we'd all be in clover. It's all about trying to come up with an idea that can give you an edge over competitors.

There are plenty of unique products and services about, some with little or no competition. There are also plenty of novel, unusual, and little known ways to promote them. Hi-profile, big traffic blogs is one. Utilising and knowing how to exploit the vastness of social media is another . . particularly sites such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.

The bottom line is that it's all about how you can take a product or service, manipulate it into something a little different to others, market it in your own distinct way, and gain a following that value how you have presented it and made them like it.

Feel free to PM me if you want some brainstorming.

I work in niches I know and can therefore excel in. Currently, I'm working on a large project in a niche in Japan. It is a big market, with some big players in it. I could easily be like you (worrying that my product will not stand out or may even be sub-standard) but that would get me nowhere. So, I have been planning and polishing to ensure my product will stand out in the marketplace. That's what you need to do.

I have felt the same way so many times! The truth is, I have come to realize, that nothing that I create will ever be perfect. I think a really good philosophy is "Don't get it perfect (it never will be), just get it going!" Remembering that let's me just get going with things realizing that my efforts won't ever be perfect but I have to just start and build from there.

I hope that helps. Good Luck!

Starting point should ALWAYS be a niche you're truly interested in. Because there will be roadblocks. And they're easy to overcome if you're passionate about the subject.
If you're not interested or just chasing money, you'll be easily swayed by the next shiny button.
So start with what you know, what you like, and forget about competition. There are always way around that. Unique and relevant content. Paid traffic. Forum posting. You just may forget yourself in all the fun you're having and then realize you're actually getting paid.

I always tell budding online entrepreneurs to pick a topic that they are passionate about, or at least interested in...

... then if that topic is monetizable, I say to them, "go for it".

Decide what product you're going to bring to the market (forget about the competition - the more the better).

Build your list, deliver great content, promote your product, promote other relevant products.

    That's it in a nutshell.
