The information overload excuse

I was just reading an internet marketing blog and the guy who writes it fell off his update schedule. Instead of accepting responsibility for being a slacker he said, "things have been going slow because I have what us internet marketers call information overload."

Sorry folks, that is not a medical condition. Shiny object syndrome isn't either.

If you want to succeed at anything you have to dedicate yourself. Make a commitment right now to never give power to those statements again. Roll up your sleeves and work. Pick a direction, go for it and review your progress later.

If you want a better life you have to take responsibility for every aspect of it. Your health, your finances, your relationships, your family life, your education, etc.

At the end of the day it's easier to say to yourself that you have shiny object syndrome or info overload but the TRUTH is you just didn't have the dedication to yourself or your success to do the things you needed to do.

I work hard, every day. It's not always fun. I get bored. I get burned out but because I force myself to push through I make a fantastic income that allows me to travel when I want and live in an exotic location and do pretty much whatever I want.

You can do the same thing, all you have to do is take responsibility for yourself. Every day. Not sometimes. Not tomorrow. Not when you are in a different position. Not when you meet the right people. Right now and every day from now on. Trust me, it's worth it. You'll feel better about yourself and you'll make REAL progress.

  • Couldn't have said it any better myself.

  • Very well said. Information overload is not exclusive to this industry! While often cited by 'gurus' as the reason new people struggle, it in no way should be offered as an excuse by someone writing an internet marketing blog!
Sure its easy to get distracted. New product emails arriving practically on the hour. Social media. Online news. But when you have a task to complete, get it done.
Sure wouldn't want my doctor to be distracted doing my annual physical complaining of 'information overload'...

    • Excellent point!

Doctor: "I've been constantly studying since I was in college, keeping myself as current as possible on new findings, diseases, cures, medicines, etc, so I can't give you a diagnosis on your health due to information overload...I hope you understand."

  • Watch out for getting on too many lists.. info overload for sure.
  • Very well stated. I sometimes find myself guilty of getting distracted and not staying focusedd on the tasks at hand. My simple old school technique is to right out a list of the things I want to accomplish today and just check them off as I complete them.

...... later I may get distracted because I have to clean off my desk, there are old notes all over the place!

    • You're smart though because you've figured out a way to reel yourself back in.
  • The top earners have highly productive actions

while the 99% gets nothing done.

    Focus is the key.
  • It's hard to stay focused for long periods. I use a program called vitamin r (Vitamin-R 2 - Time Boxing for Mac OS X) to help stay focused, it's a pomodoro technique type software but it has a lot of useful features I haven't seen on other pomodoro programs. I think it might be Mac only.
  • I suffer from depression which really makes me procrastinate as I learn how to try to make money online from an online course I signed up for.

I sometimes wonder if I am rebelling from success due to childhood issues and a brother who is much more successful in his life than I. My Parents loved him more.

I'm now looking for a psychologist to help me focus on my goal of making a living online and help me fight off the distractions and stay on course for success.

I believe in the course I signed up for. I also feel this is the last one I will try so I have to make it work.

I pay my house off in 9 years but I don't want to wait until then to retire.

Good Luck to all others with the same goal.
  • Info overload is common when you are new. Simplicity is King! Right now in the Internet community, the great majority of marketers are trying to do almost everything under the sun in regards to marketing.

My mind is just like anyone else's - I would burn out trying to accomplish so much.

I don't like working hard and have found over the years by experience, that my best results don't come from working hard.

I get the best results when I my 'doing' is coming from 'inspiration' and NOT motivation.

    Congratulations on your success Beatinest!

    • I had almost a page of stuff written in response to you but I'm not going to post it because I don't know how depressed you are and it might have taken you over the edge.

      No offense but this...

"I sometimes wonder if I am rebelling from success due to childhood issues and a brother who is much more successful in his life than I. My Parents loved him more."

...as an excuse for not doing anything (or procrastinating) is pretty lame. Everybody has issues like this, it's called life. It's the past, move on. We've all got issues...some of us have subscriptions.

      Oh, and this...

"I believe in the course I signed up for. I also feel this is the last one I will try so I have to make it work. "

...Better to believe in yourself. You'll make it work or you won't, it's up to you.

Congrats on paying off your house in 9 years, very cool accomplishment.
    • Love the tagline in your sig.
  • Excuses are like belly buttons.......

  • Well said indeed :-) Same goes for anything in life. You have to push yourself beyond your natural comfort levels. It makes me laugh when people say 'oh, it's ok for you because you can have time off when you like..... or, you can afford that because you earn loads of money'

Do these people not realise that you have to work hard to get where you are??

    Obviously not!!

    • Well said. Anyone who blogs can at least post once a week at the minimum. You can always outsource a snippet article for a few bucks if you do not want to write or can not for some reason.

You could just post, "you know what, I really didn't have anything worthwhile to say, so instead of posting rehashed or worthless crap, I decided not to write anything at all" and just leave it at that for a while.
  • I don't spend a ton of time analyzing what other people do or don't do. I just do what I do and leave it at that.

    • Dude,

      This is awesome.

IM can be boring sometimes, but pushing through it till the exciting times is what makes you a warrior. I think 'shiny object syndrome' is the biggest killer of newbie affilaites.

Just stick to something and make it work. If someone else is making bank with a particular method, so can you..
  • Everyone gets distracted at some time or other. You just have to learn to recognize quickly when it's happening and put a stop to it.

There are ways to eliminate or minimize your distractions so work out what they are and figure out how you can stamp them out.

If you're constantly playing with your phone turn it off and leave it in another room. I guarantee when it's not in reaching distance you'll forget all about it.

If it's FB, Twitter, blogs and forums then use StayFocused plugin and block them.

If it's watching TV then go work in the library or coffee shop where there isn't one.
  • If you're a newbie to Internet marketing, it's easy to get distracted with all the shiny objects. The reason is simply because of the newness of the terrain. The solution is to chart a course and be focused on that single course till you get a positive result.
