Slow Load Time with HostGator - Other Affordable Options?

by AZJ0SH

I only have 2-3 sites running on my shared hosting plan and they all load slow, I complained to HG and it's still a problem.

What other hosting companies out there are reliable, and faster and still affordable? Does a company like that exist?

Been using Bluehost for quite awhile and I have nothing but good things to say about them. Very competitive pricing (just stay away from the 'pro plan' unless you think you really need it - the personal has never been an issue for me).
Great customer service as well, online chat live with tech support, the whole business.
And I'm not even an affiliate!

Blue host and hostgator are owned by the same people, EIG, as stated above. Have been with hostgator for a few years, then ever since they got bought out by EIG (within the last year) I have had lots of problems and outages.

After years of lousy hosting, and lots of research I chose stablehost.com.

NIGHT and DAY... I'm so happy with them. What I love about them is you get 24/7, prompt support and they fix anything you need.

They transfer all your sites for FREE.

CHEAP - They saved me $40.00 a month from my old hosting costs!

        AMAZING!

Wish I had switched years ago.

    Short answer: NO.

Your issues may be related to your sites not being optimized. Try running them through any services online such as SEO Tools, Software and Articles | SeoSiteCheckup.com or any other similar free service. Check for image loading times, etc...

Start here. Large file size images, videos, etc. can slow things down. So can plugins that make a lot of server calls or calls to outside services (like ad networks).

If that isn't your problem, I switched over to Veerotech.net about a month ago, and I've been very happy.

Veerotech is a winner in my book. Just transferred over to them about a week ago. Everything loads slightly faster (i thought it was fast before lol) and there isn't a thing I would change about the service.

I had the same issue, but with HostLatte, their service is barely there, so I moved to HostGator. They sent me an e-mail explaining how to optimize my site and now it loads really fast. The Cache plugin was the best thing I could have done and now it loads extremely fast. Plugins for the most part were slowing my site down. Now it's less than 1 second to load everything. PM me if you'd like more information and I can copy their list e-mail they sent me to you.

I'm also thinking about leaving Hostgator as well so I'm interested in seeing what everyone suggests! I am highly disappointed in the service and load times I've seen with Hostgator.

If anyone's interested, this is EIG's portfolio of brands. If you're at any one of them you'll probably get the HostGator experience at some point, there are some diamonds in the ruff, though: The Endurance Brands | Endurance International Group

Thanks for the mention here guys. It's always good to see happy customers!

OP - can you give any details on the sites? What types of sites they are, any metrics, plugins (if any), image heavy?

No traffic on the sites yet, just from myself loading it. All sites are wordpress or opencart based, no heavy plugins or anything like that yet.

Here is one of my sites I am working on that is loading slow, all I did so far was install OpenCart, no themes/modules yet: Cat Tree Depot

Your V200 plan is the same price I pay with HG. Do you offer discounts if I pay a year in advance or anything like that? I may consider moving all my sites over to your hosting. I only have 5-10 sites max at a time, none of them get much traffic yet.

  • That is the problem with shared hosting.. hostgator, bluehost, godaddy.. they all have these problems most of the time.

If you want to get rid of these problems you have to consider VPS or dedicated.. Otherwise it's only to accept that you share a server with many people and that loading time will fluctuate like a m****r****er

Hostgator is terrible. And it's EIG now -- the old Hostgator is gone. Slow load times are a hallmark of EIG. They overstuff their servers, and it simply runs poorly.

If you want another unlimited-style host, Site5 and Arvixe are excellent.
If you are fine with resources-specific hosts, then Veerotech and Stream101 are quite good.

Most people should NOT use a VPS.

I've used resellerzoom.com for about 8 years. I've never had any major problems with them and they are very affordable. I host quite a few sites with them. Great customer service.

ResellerZoom / HostingZoom was bought by JaguarPC at some point (2008, I think?). So it's not been under the same ownership (techs, support, etc) since you started. JaguarPC was a favorite of mine since the 90s. But in the last 1-2 years, support has really tanked. I just can't support them anymore. There are better hosts right now.

Hopefully they'll get through this in 2014. We'll see.

I'm not sure about that. It's only been in the last year or so that I have been hearing about JaguarPC. I've never looked at it close enough to really understand the exact relationship between Resellerzoom, Hostingzoom and JaguarPC. I know their customer support once referred to JaguarPC as their "sister company". I thought Greg Landis has owned all 3 companies for years but maybe I'm wrong.

Anyway, all I know for sure is I've never had any problems with them.

    Well, get sure.

The 2008 buyout is documented online. They finally integrated the billing panels transparently about a year ago. Before that, it was still the same host. Zach and Greg have mentioned these things on WHT for years now.

Their CS has really tanked since mid 2011, and has never recovered to pre-2011 levels. It's been a roller coaster since then, although Greg is certainly trying to fix it. The biggest problem is that they had a huge growth surge, and that just sapped their hardware and personnel. I don't envy him, and wish him luck.

After their last bout of issues -- and there were were many in 2012 and 2013 -- I withdrew my support for the time being. I cannot in good faith suggest a host with so many problems right now. I surely don't want to send them new customers when that's why they're in this mess!

Tip for you: Maintain your own local backups!!!
