Question about nameservers...

Hi there, I just bought a domain through an auction and now it is in my Godaddy account. The nameserver now is made of this domain name. ns1.aaa.com ns2.aaa.com (aaa.com is the domain I just bought).

When you go to aaa.com now, it goes to the old site. It is (I assume) because the former owner did not take down the site from their server and since ns1(2).aaa.com is still pointing to the server, the old site is still up, correct?

I suppose if I set up aaa.com with my server and change the name server info to the new server's info, then the domain will be propagated to my new server and I can start using the domain. Please correct me if I'm wrong at this point.

Now my question is why is this nameservers still working when the domain itself is transfered to my account already (between Godaddy accounts)? Will this private nameserver information eventually disappear (like propagation time?)?

What happens if I create my own ns1,2.aaa.com and point it to the new server? There would be 2 pieces of information about the same name servers? I'm a bit confused.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Whenever the name servers change, it can take between 24-48 hours to take effect. Or possibly it could just be your computer - use a proxy browser to check.

If it is, go to your computers search bar, type "cmd", right click on it and click "run as administrator", type "ipconfig /flush dns", hit enter, then clear your browsers cookies and you should be golden.

Sounds like you're making things more complicated than they need to be. If you want to use your domain, just copy and paste the name servers from your hosting account over and click save. Hopefully within about a few hours the changes will take effect. Sometimes it happens in minutes.
    Thank you for your reply.

Yes I do know what should be done usually to use my own domain. Setting up my server's nameserver info and stuff. I have done that many times.

My question is more like "What if I do want to keep using ns1(2).aaa.com as my name servers when it is pointing to another(former owner's) server?"

I know that to use the domain with the new server I can just change the nameserver info. However it bothers me that name server info with my domain is pointing to another server and want to know if it disappears eventually.

    Thanks!

Hi, if you want to use ns1.aaa.com and ns2.aaa.com as nameservers for aaa.com, just set them up as nameservers pointing to your hosting ip addresses.

With my domain registry (OnlineNic.com), I can add any nameservers for any of the domains registered with them. Hopefully GoDaddy will let you do this to.

For example if your web hosting server ip is 123.456.78.90 - create nameservers like this

      ns1.bbb.com 123.456.78.90
      ns2.bbb.com 123.456.78.90

      ..then point

      bbb.com ns1.bbb.com
      bbb.com ns2.bbb.com

It's sounds complicated, but just remember "nameservers" and "domain name" are just aliases for the ip addresses.

ns1.bbb.com is just an alias for 123.456.78.90

bbb.com goes to ns1.bbb.com which goes to 123.456.78.90

you can use your own name servers the same one ns1/2.aaa . com just change the ip addresses. add your hosting account IP address and this is called white label name servers.

your domain had white lable name servers

ns1/2. yourdomain . com --> old ip address pointing to old site

      change it

ns1/2. yourdomain . com --> new hosting ip address

I understand it would override the former owner's setting, correct?

It's often better to have DNS at the host (ns1.host.com), or with a third-party (Namecheap FreeDNS, for example). If nothing else, they give redundancy, which you won't have on a single server.

You're experiencing propagation. It can take several days to go around the globe.
