My own tracking system for my affiliate program

I wanna try affiliate marketing for my business, but none of the networks will let me in. Not strange at all, since my business is kinda lokal. Anyway, I figured that some sort of affiliate program could be worth testing, but the problem is tracking.

I offer all kinds of computer services in my area - computer repair, webdesign etc. The google search numbers are nothing to talk about so both ppc and SEO is kinda worthless. I've done both and I've also run Facebook campaigns, tried newspapers advertisment and put up posters all over the place. Posters are really working out well, btw. Newspapers not so much.

Anyway, we happen to have a couple of big schools in the area, and maybe it would be a good idea to offer the students 10-15% for sending me customers. But how do I track this when 99% of my customers contact me by phone?

    Well one option is operating on the honor system in which you rely on clients to tell you who referred them or rely on your affiliates to tell you which clients will be contacting you, but depending on people to remember important information like that never ends up well.

    Usually in the referral business when you are tracking phone sales, you'll have a unique phone number for each place you track from.

    For example, if you have a website for each city you do business in, you might have a phone number for each website so you can track which websites brought sales. Or if you're split-testing multiple PPC ads, you can use separate numbers for these to see which brought in the most sales.

    However, picking up a virtual phone number for each student you sign on as an affiliate can get expensive. What I would recommend is the following:
    • Get a virtual phone number from somewhere like RingCentral
    • Set up a phone extension for each student (all extensions will still forward to your same real cell phone number, etc); this will be their unique identifer
    • When someone calls, you will be able to log in to your account and see which extension, and thus affiliate, brought in the call; if you make a sale, you know who to credit it to
