How to set up website using VPS hosting?

Hi
I'm a total newb trying to get in the affiliate marketing business.
So just bought a domain name (from Namecheap) and VPS hosting (from Stablehost), already set up nameservers and pointed my domain to it.

Here's my question:
How do I connect to my VPS and even upload stuff to it?
I can't to seem to find any straightforward answers (probably b/c there isn't one). I've used cPanel before, but my VPS provider doesn't have cPanel installed and uses something called CentOS?
Anyways I want to know how can I at least upload a file and get my website to just display "Hello"
Done some Googling and seems like I need to install a variety of programs (LAMP, Kloxo, WAMP just to name a few), does this sound like I'm on the right track?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Easy there,

    I am curious, why didn't you just get regular web hosting? A VPS is more expensive and less useful if you're trying to just host a website.

    It's a very complicated process to setup hosting on a VPS without any control panel.

    What OS are you currently running?

    You probably shouldn't be messing around with a VPS.


    Do you want to learn to be a server administrator, or learn to make money with your website and do IM?

    What you have is an unmanaged VPS. To make effective use of this VPS you should know how to use the operating system on your vps and the commands. If you are a newbie it would be much better to go for a VPS that has cpanel or even shared hosting with cpanel.

    You need to either switch to shared hosting, a managed VPS or hire an administrator to do this for you. If not, you're going to end up with problems. Why do you have a VPS?

    its not easy to go without a control panel for non techs. If you really want to stick with VPS, then try to use a free control panel like KLOXO, bit similar to cpanel. why not try a business shared hosting plan instead of VPS?

      Thanks for the responses. Looks like I jumped the gun there with VPS. Just read that VPS would be better than shared hosting. Planning to build a website and do IM. Lesson learned. That being said, can anyone recommend VPS hosting that is newbie friendly or should I just stick with shared hosting until I actually start getting traffic and making money?

        I would recommend going to shared hosting. If you want to stay with a VPS, you're most likely going to need something that's managed.

          CentOS is just your Linux-based operating system. cPanel can be installed on this to manage your hosting. You should just ask your host to do this for you or hire someone to do it for you.
