What would we do without Askimet! It would be impossible to keep a blog clean for people to enjoy without it. But I do have a bit of a bad habit of skimming the spam that I find in the queue occasionally! I just can't for the life of me understand why anyone bothers to go to the effort to write this stuff and organize for it to be posted to my blog along with millions of others. I guess it intrigues me. Sometimes I just like to see it to get a laugh.

For example, I just picked out these random posts today:

"We learn from experience that men never learn anything from experience." (linking to some kind of loan finance site)

"It meaning be anecdote of the a-one programs of 2009-2010!" (this one was actually linking to google.com - go figure)

"Program diversion advocacy calligraphy and Anti-DDoS confinement!!!" (And this one????)

(I thought I should refrain from quoting any of the descriptions of the porn sites that tried to get through)

Who in their right mind would click on these posts even if they did get through?

  • I feel for you

Most of them comes from same ips with different websites and different gmail/yahoo addresses. Seems like some real people bought link building packages from some really spammy companies ...

    • This spam is almost always delivered via "bots" unless the spammer is truly an amateur. So even if they get .001% of people opening the message, it's worth it. Imagine how many sites a bot can visit with the click of a mouse? Not to mention, some sites will have no spam protection or approval process and the message will go live instantly. Heck, they may even get really lucky and hit on a dofollow blog. Highly unlikely, but possible. It's all about volume
    • Yeah, I've got problems :p
  • Yeah, I love akismet......does a very good job of catching almost all spammy content....quite literally the single best essential to any bloggers arsenal!
  • Man, I've activated Akismet religiously since the first WP site I put up, just because it was mentioned in the tutorial I was following. I never even thought anything of it. Yesterday a friend of mine was complaining about form spam and I realized that the concept is actually a little alien to me... Akismet has done THAT good a job, that it has never been a real concern of mine.

Also, as a tip the cForms plugin lets you reap the benefits of Akismet for your email contact pages and other forms you might have on your page that aren't comments. Both are a life-saver.
