Sports Blog: Sell or Re-Brand?

I run a fairly popular Arsenal Football Club blog.

I began it as a hobby a while back, but it has now come to a point where I’d like it to become a source of benefit other than just pleasure.

As time goes on, clients and money-making projects have got in its way. In short, my other blog (Employ the Internet) & clients are far more important tasks to be focusing on for me at the moment.

So, I’m struggling to find the time/motivation to maintain the blog, due to its lack of real use to me. The Adsense money is there, but only in small quantities.

My options:

1) Sell it. (Using Flippa, probably).

2) Re-brand it, with a very simple theme, linking it with me/my personal blog via the about page, etc. I’d taketo the blog with a more personal approach, instead of merely hiding behind the brand. This has worked quite well for other “Arsenal Bloggers” in the same niche, who have revealed themselves publicly.

Currently, the blog looks like a sports website. Lots of images, bold headers, very in your face. I would change this completely, and go for a very simple wordpress theme like this one.

Additionally, even if direct revenues stay low, my personal blog would benefit from some extra traffic, which could turn into either subscribers or clients.

I’d also feel more motivated to write for it and maintain it, since it would indirectly support my main focus, which is to attract subscribers and clients. Plus, I do still enjoy writing about Arsenal, since it’s something close to my heart.

I’m leaning towards option 2 at this point. Thoughts?

If it has decent SEO metrics then Im sure some sports betting sites would pay you too link to them, if your not that bothered about the site that is!! This could make you some extra money.

It's hard to say without knowing traffic stats, income and metrics

If you also have a personal blog then I would probably keep it... maybe you could use it as part of a PBN ;-)

Using betting sites seems to be the only way to make money out of it actually, but it's not something I want to enter into.

I get roughly 12,000 uniques with over 17,000 pageviews a month. Nothing groundbreaking, but it's not bad.

Don't fix what is not broken - the blog sounds like it's doing well with what you are currently doing even if you can't give it your full attention. If you need more content to keep things fresh I'm sure you could get some quality guest bloggers from your niche with that level of traffic. Let others make the content & have your posts supplement said content.

I suppose you're right. My issue is just that it isn't really producing much for me.

Then again, I could always link it over to my other blog via the about page whilst keeping it as it is...

How are you currently monetizing the site? I'll gladly help try and give you some ideas for turning your visitors to $$$ and I'm sure others here would as well.

Thanks very much Matt, and to everybody else for their input!

I'm only using Adsense at the moment, and it's not doing anything spectacular for me.

I've reached out to independent websites in the Football niche to sell banner ads with no takers so far.

Next on my list is afiliate links (Arsenal related books, etc). Any other ideas are more than welcome

No problem Here's a few other ideas

                1. Make an opt-in list, send emails when new content is posted + promote affiliate offers.
                2. Consider offering to sell (and\or trade) links to other folks in the field
                3. Talk to owners of similar sites\niches and offer banner ads in trade for ads on their site, no money in this but it could lead to $ down the road.
                4. Have a ebook written about an interesting topic that your readers may be interested in and sell it direct to them.

Hope these ideas help you in your brainstorming/planning for the future of your site!

Thanks a lot Matt, I think you've given me lots to think about. Affiliate links seems to be my best shot I think.

Keep it as it is and maybe sell some links (carefully)? That would be my choice...
