What is Internet Marketing for you? A business that you work for a few hours a week or is it like a job that you have to work many hours every day?

    bluebrain,

Like a job with three main differences:

    1. You're the master and responsible of your own creativity and decisions.
    2. Freedom.
    3. I generate money for myself, not someone else.

Internet Marketing is such a broad term that it encompasses hundreds of different business models. The answer would depend entirely on how a person's business is set up.

I know marketers who run a 6 and 7 figure business with anywhere from 2 to 4 people, though they are heavily involved in their business.

I also know marketers who run 6 and 7 figure businesses and nearly everything is outsourced and they literally don't have to do much.

It all depends on how you set up the business with automation and Virtual Assistants (VAs).

Well, let's be honest - for me it started out as a hobby. You know, 'shiny button surfing'.
Then became a job that I put more hours into than most jobs I've ever had.
Can now say it's a business, but if I don't want it to slip back into 'job' status I still have to work it quite regularly and be disciplined.

Internet marketing is more like a career to me. When you enjoy what you are doing it never seems like a job.

I am impressed with people who are billionaires, or millionaires, and still get up and work everyday. Internet marketing can be like that. It becomes more then just about money.

Internet marketing can be a bit of both, it just depends on how you approach it. You start off working a lot on your business, like getting traffic the RIGHT way, then once you start making a profit from your proven day to day formula you can outsource the work that you do.

As most here have already stated, it started as an area of interest (a hobby), became a massive undertaking of study, long hours, work, trial & error, and will eventually be my freedom once my larger scale projects come to fruition.

In short, right now, it's a job that requires too many hours.

But... 3 months, 6 months, or even 2 years from now, all of today's hard work will be compounded over time (leveraged) and will deliver automated sales for years to come... provided there's an internet, and I am still breathing.

robert kiyosaki talks about 4 quadrants. I think most fall into self employed quandrant with a sprinkle of business owner in the mix. Of course if you let them tell it they will say they are business owners.

A business owner is donald trump. I never seen him pick up a saw. An investor is warren buffet. I never seen him manage a business, just his portforlio

Internet marketers work in the business more so than on the business. If you write copy, write articles, or, do any of the manual labor then you are self employed.

Show me an internet marketer who outsource everything and I'll show you a liar.

uh oh I am moving into rant territory.

For me it started like a job when I already had a day job.

I squeezed in as many hours as possible to learn what I needed to know.

Eventually I quit my day job and IM was just like another job but with longer hours.

Now it's more like a hobby that brings in more $$ than I ever got working for someone else.

But, it's really up to you!

Visualise the way you want things to turn out .... and just go for it

I think "Internet Marketing" is always just another job if you are marketing other people's products and just making a commission or service fee. Whether you are an employee or contractor, you are still working on building someone else's business and brand. If you are just an affiliate or you don't outsource anything, then you are in the S quadrant.

If you have your own brand, products or services and you "use" Internet Marketing to sell them, and you outsource allot of work... then you own a business which is an asset. That's what I do so I look at Internet Marketing as just one part of my overall business.

So make sure you build your own site/blog, list, products, brand, social media profiles, etc. so you are creating something lasting that you will continue to own.

The Internet is the one rare place that anyone can get into the Kiyosaki B and I quadrants because blogs, lists and digital products have unlimited scale and potential for outsourcing for relatively less investment than offline business. You can create true Kiyosaki assets online with very little money.

It can be a job or a business...

It depends on your abilities and preferences.

Some folks like freedom and may choose to outsource a majority of tasks while other folks like having something to do and enjoy "working" in front of the computer and not having to answer to a boss or all the "crap" that comes with working for someone else.

Then there will be some folks like me who are kinda in the middle.

While my business doesn't take much "work" from me these days. If I were to go on vacation for a month and not touch it I wouldn't make much money...

On the flip side - I do outsource enough things that I can safely travel and enjoy life and still not have to "work" much on my business.

However, since I have a coaching site I can never truly work less than an hour a week as I am obligated to my group coaching students. While I technically could outsource this as well and hire other marketers to speak to my students this is one of the things I enjoy and look forward to doing each week in my business.

So, long story short - it all depends on what you are looking for. First, decide what type of business you actually want then work towards that goal. No matter which route a marketer takes, both will involve a lot of hard work to get started.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,
    Coby

It depends. Internet marketing is a very broad term. One has to be said - it ain't easy, there's no pot with gold at the end of a rainbow. Everybody got the skills, there's always someone who will do your job cheaper.

But... if you're smarter, have better and maybe have a good network you're not maybe into making billions of dollars, but some decent income is very available.

The problem with the question in the OP is pretty easy to spot.

Both jobs and businesses require a lot of work. In most cases, in fact, running a successful business requires more work than just having a regular 9 - 5 job.

On the one hand you just show up for a set number of hours and get handed a paycheck. On the other, you are personally responsible for the success or failure of everything.

            Having a job is easy.

Depends upon who's answering... Some will think it is a job, some others will think it is a business.

But, for a moment, let's sidestep the question and ask something else: have you ever heard of a job, that does not lead you to bearing business responsibilities? Probably, no!

So the question may really be: who business are you serving - your own or someone else's?

Maybe, that's what you had meant as the "real" question?

I think you raise and interesting question that has truths on both sides of the equation.

The question is what do you want it to be?

If you're self employed and can never take off because you'll lose your income, then it's a job.

If you're self employed and can continue earning an income without your presence, then I'd say it's a business.

If you're multiplying yourself through employees or outsourcing of revenue producing goods and services, then you have a business.

At the end of the day it's a job and I work a lot more focused hours that I ever did when I had an office job where I spent 8hrs a day mastering the art of paper shuffling to look busy

    The difference is that;

The World is my Oyster - I can work from anywhere in the World
I can Work the hours that suit me
    I don't have to commute
My success is down to me, I don't have to grovel or suck up to a boss to get on
    My earnings are limitless

You've certainly got to put in the hours though especially when you are first starting out to gain that traction.

The two terms here "Internet" and "Marketing" provide you the knowledge of both worlds.
And who doesn't like the freedom ,the independence, the money, the creativity that comes as an added bonus . Its up to you as to how many hours you want or can do work on your strategy. And that's the beauty of IM. And you can even do the work laying flat on your bed.
And if you are using it as a side income then also you got no problem, as long as you follow a regular schedule.
And cash will roll in if you are doing it right.

My personal opinion is that I don't think this really is a choice. It is either you have the drive in you to do any of the options and do it well. Some people simply put....can't do one of the other so it really leaves them "no choice" for the lack of a better explanation.

I tend to think of a "job" as when you're an employee working for someone else, whereas a business something you are running yourself. So, in that sense, I see Internet Marketing (though that really is a wildly general term) as a business. You set your own hours, you make your own plan, you take your own action.

IM can be started as self employed, which is a job. Here you are trading time for money.

To move into a stage where you are operating a business, you need to have systems in place. And you need to have skills to operate those systems efficiently.

Sure, you can outsource some skills to other people, but again, that would require money and you will also need to tell the people how to do the job so that they can do them efficiently.

If you are working solo, focus on practicing. Pay attention to the processes of various tasks you are doing, and then practice them enough so that they get easier later on.

    I treat is like both:

    Business:

1- No boss standing over me telling me what to do and when to do in order to turn over a profit.

2- Costs money every month. Oh, I forgot, traditional jobs are not free either. You have to pay for transportation to and from work and for clothing and for tools (if you need them for your job) and for food to eat while you are at the job.

3- I get paid for my results and not my time.

    Job:

1- I have to put in X amount of hours just like a job to keep it in the 'flow' or momentum.

2- I have to show up 'every' day.

3- I have to treat it the same as I would a job that paid all my bills and provided me with an income.

4- Specific Tasks - I have to do specific stuff everyday that has to get results just like at your job. If you go to work and don't fulfill your obligations to your employer, they won't pay you.

You have to keep producing in both. So for me Internet marketing is like a business and a job.

I consider IM as a business. It's something that I don't treat as a job that I need to endure on a daily basis just because it pays my bills. It's something that I can call one of my passions in life.

I don't mind spending a lot of time in IM since I find it truly enjoyable. I learn new things and I apply whatever knowledge that I gain in my IM business. Never a dull day just a combination of calm and tedious days.

I'd rather be doing something productive online just merely surfing the net, FB, Twitter or watching videos. One's business can be someone's source of fun and pleasure. If you like and love what you're doing then it doesn't look like it's work that you dread to do on a daily basis.

You're your own Boss - your own Master. In your world, it's your own rules. You can dictate your own work pace. You can pause to rest and recharge. Then you can work non-stop. You're in control of how much money you want to earn based on your weekly, monthly or yearly projections.
