Joint Ventures - For how long do you get paid

Hi all,

Hope everyone is doing well.

So I have an opportunity to JV with someone & we have an issue with the contract now.

I expect to get paid for each lead I send even if we decide to part ways. This is how I've done it in the past with another JV, but he's saying if I don't produce leads once every 60-90 days or we part ways, then I won't get my commissions after that.

I'd like to hear only from people who have JVed with others.

Thanks

Michelle

Hi Michelle, I assume your getting a monthly residual from each new client for life of that client? Or that is what you would like?

How hard of a sell is this if you have 60-90 days to bring in a new lead?

I have heard of JVs that have a limit on the monthly commissions, say 3 months if the customer support is high or upfront sales training is extensive.

Is there any situation like that?

    Hi Shane,

Yes this is correct, if the client stays with the SEO plan I get my commission.

Well the partner is leaving it up to me on how much to explain to the lead upfront. I could even just send him the lead cold.

I want to talk to the lead just because I want to see how serious they are & I certainly don't want to be sending people to my partner who can't even afford the service.

He'll even do up a video for me, but in the end I expect him to answer any finalizing questions & get them set up with the service, so I'd say I'd do 25-50% of the selling & he'd do the rest.

There is no major training for me. We had one phone meeting & I wrote him several questions & other than some other questions that may pop up as the leads come in, I'm pretty much trained I'd say.

I just don't think it's fair that I send a lead & then I don't get long term benefit even if we part ways. I hope I bring in a new lead every month or two, but maybe I won't.

He also said that this is the type of agreement he has with the SEO company (I'm now just realizing this isn't his own SEO team. I didn't know that before.). It's a performance based agreement.

My legal guy thinks this is BS & he's just trying to get out of paying me if I don't produce.

This isn't a f/t sales position for me, although if it goes well, I'll expend more effort into it.

I was also concerned when I found out he didn't have a contract created & was balking at having one drawn up. That's always a red flag for me when dealing with someone who claims to be in business. He's not really an entrepreneur, he's more an engineer, so I let that slide & I paid for the contract.

    Hope that explains things.

    Thank you

Michelle, it sounds like you already know the answer. I know when my former business partner and I entered into a legal agreement, the lawyer said he breaks up more of them than he creates.

You would be better off using your own SEO company by white-labeling or wholesaling. There are multiple companies that will discount their service so you can sell over that price.

It also sounds as you said that this person is just a middle man and doing the same thing. White-labeling someone else's or buying services discounted as a reseller.

If you don't mind talking to and prospecting for leads, you could do this without him. You are already running into trouble and take it from someone who has been there, no reason to continue on because it won't end well.

      Best of luck! Shane

Thanks Shane & after discussing it with my lawyer, I am even more certain I shouldn't go into this if he's not going to give me my commissions even if we part ways. That's just not right that he'd make money while I make nothing.

I was looking more to hear from a bunch of people re: their experiences to see if someone else out there came across the same stumbling block. I still have to read my Jay Abraham kit I purchased years ago on JVing as we all know HE'S the master LOL

I've been looking for a good white hat SEO firm for a while now, but nothing has come my way. In this situation, his SEO isn't the "norm" & so b/c it's very straightforward & easy to see if there are results right away (won't jeopardize Google), I was excited about it. I've never heard of this method before, but learned of something similar years ago when it came to affiliates.

Sorry, just don't want to give away the method in public.
