Preventing the Theft of Digital Content

Greetings fellow Warriors,

I want to hear about how you deal with digital content theft, for example if you have a plugin, theme, PDF or those types of things - how do you protect your asset?

      Hey Bill,

We did indeed - gave me the idea to start a thread asking specifically for peoples prevention methods. Thanks for the link though that will be useful for warriors reading this post who hadn't seen the other thread.

      @Chris

If microsoft can't even protect their software what chance do we have!

That watermark on the videos sounds pretty effective, you could use your company logo as the watermark. I assume thats what you were talking about anyway.

        Two things:

The black hatters would find a way to break it.

Then the black hatters would share the information online.

That happened with cell phones a few years ago. I don't remember all of the details, but I think it was the iPhone, and the phones were coded to make them exclusive to certain providers.

Once the hack was discovered, it was shared world-wide in days.

You can't, plain and simple. Hell, Microsoft can't even protect windows.

A company used to sell videos (I don't remember the niche), and with each purchase, your videos would be watermarked with your name and stuff. This is to discourage you from sharing, since it'd be easy to locate the culprit by viewing the illegally distributed videos. However, you had to wait a few hours before you could access your purchase.

The same logic is possible for PDF files, but they can be edited out by using a PDF editor. So it won't work all that great over there.

In short, there are plenty of ways to circumvent security precautions. The only thing it does is create more problems for your genuine customers. Your resources are better spent in making better products for your genuine customers.

Any security feature that you add to your website/PDF, there will always be those who are smart and will be able to steal your content.

Yeah it appears pretty tricky to stop theft completly, near impossible..
but taking measures to make your digital content a little bit harder to steal seems to e worthwhile.

    thanks for you comments guys

Unfortunately I don't believe that there's nothing that can be done about it. Ebooks are horrible easy to copy, regardless if you put protection on it to not have them copy and paste it, there's still programs out there that can unlock it.

    It's frustrating.

I'm starting to think, once again, physical products are the way to go but digital products are just so convenient.

I hate to ECHO (Echo.....echo....) the same thing that everyone else has already said. Ultimately, you cannot truly protect your digital content. However, you can take some small steps to help make it a little bit more difficult.

I believe e-junkie.com will deliver your ebook to your customer with some decent protection options. They give the customer a link to download the ebook. The link expires after a day or so. They also limit the buyer to 1 download of the ebook. This prevents buyers from blasting the link out onto forums to others to download it for free. And I might be wrong about this one, but I think they watermark the ebook with the customer's name on it. This would help to find the individual responsible for making unauthorized copies. Their service is $5 a month.

As far a protecting video, you can sign up with viimeo.com (i believe that is how you spell it). They will host your videos and make it secure so that people cannot download it or embed the video elsewhere throughout the web. They charge an annual fee of around $199.

      Hope this helps.
