Marketing royalty free music

Hi,

I've recently started up a new site to sell royalty free music online that a friend and myself have written (we're both composers, I'm just a reluctant web developer trying to break free from his day job and move into music full time).

Now this is a VERY competitive area (what isn't these days!), so I'm trying to think about the things I can do to increase exposure, gain new clients and make myself heard among the noise basically.

We have a YouTube account that we plan to post our tracks on regularly, have a Twitter account that we'll post the occasional bit of news on (2-3 times a week probably) and will try and get some Google love by using Google+ as well. We also use SoundCloud for our previews as it makes sense to target places where music is the primary focus I think.

Our time is a bit limited as we need to write new material as well (!), but I was wondering what the most effective way of marketing this type of product would be other than the above?

I'm in the process of rebuilding the site in Wordpress so that it has a shopping cart, but you can see what we have so far here. We're a really small startup at this point, so I'm hosting this on shared hosting and know the speed of the site is an issue, but until we start making a bit of revenue, we can't justify spending on expensive hosting and cacheing solutions.

Would a squeeze page be worth a pop for this kind of thing? If my knowledge of websites stretches far enough, I want to integrate an affiliate scheme to try and boost sales, but from what I read here, it's hard to get good affiliates on board.

Any advice on how I can kickstart this moping mule would be great.

Thanks,

Osu

Love the look of your site...it's clean looking, easy on the eyes and not too complex.

How about approaching some marketers who are into producing videos? Also, sites that are promoting video marketing would be a perfect fit to approach for becoming an affiliate. They are not your direct competitors, but would compliment the service you offer. Creating a join venture with someone offering video services would also be a good option.

Try to go where there's lots of traffic for your targeted audience who are seeking music. Here's a site that listed some places: 10 Great Places to Share Your Music Online

Do the brands mentioned at the footer of your site really use your music?

By the way, I don't know if it's just me, but your site loads a bit slow.

        Hi Bodyrock,

Yes, they're authentic usages by those brands - some have used the tracks as is, others have been commissioned either myself or my business partner to write to spec.

And yes, the site is indeed slow (it's hosted on shared hosting currently). It's something that worries me actually as I know it's an important factor for any ecommerce site. I'm working on reducing the page size and looking at CDN hosting options but I need to get above a certain threshold in earnings before I can invest in proper hosting though otherwise it won't make sense financially.

I've also tried to ease bandwidth concerns by using SoundCloud for the previews and am hosting the files themselves on Amazon S3, so hoping that will slash the bandwidth costs even though I'll be relying on third parties for uptime (they're both big companies, so I'm hopeful it was a wise decision).

@RevenueGal, thanks for the compliments and the link, I'll check that out now. The video marketing ideas is a good one actually. The only thing will be how to integrate something like that into the current site while keeping costs down and not becoming another multi-media entity (there are lots out there so the original idea was to focus on music only).

I have seen 2 WSOs recently that are offering royalty free music and those WSOs are selling like hot cakes. There are probably more WSOs like that but those 2 were released recently.
That sounds interesting. I'm new here, so need to investigate what WSO's are all about as it's a new term to me. Will check it out now.

Thanks for all the responses so far.
