Is Affiliate Marketing Easier Than Creating Your Own Products?

This is a question I see so very often. One that seems to be proven by the trends in the marketplace:

Is affiliate marketing easier than being a product creator.

I have mixed feelings both ways.

I have done both successfully... and I DEFINITELY have proven one over the other... but the debates and arguments for both sides are always very interesting conversation.

1. Affiliate marketing seems faster to setup.. but you have no control over the asset. So I have setup complete funnels before, backlinking, writing articles... the whole 9... only to have the product be taken down a short time later.

BOOM!

All your work down to zero in a flash!

2. Product creation takes a bit more work and creative thinking (but not much when you consider all the work trying to get traffic for an affiliate product above) upfront...

But then you have an asset for LIFE!

One that can NEVER be taken away. That is the type of businesses I like: Do the work once.. and it pays you forever.

I can see affiliate marketing being a "supplement" to your existing business to add another revenue stream...

But as the actual business.......... Seems no different than getting a job - You work hard to build someone else's business for them. Does that make sense

If you can make your own product, you can get more revenues. You can easily find people to promote your product. But you will never find someone promoting your affiliate link. But creating your own product needs time and more work than setting up an affiliate business. But then the work done after setting up your affiliate business is a lot more than your own product. You constantly have to work for it in order to get traffic. But this doens't mean you will not need to work anymore for your product. You have to keep it always fresh, attractive and make people to get value from your product in order to continue making sales.

My initial online ventures were completely Aff. prohram promotions. Later I learned that having my own product is going to beat anything... like you said more control, lifetime asset and added promotional effects!

Right now I stopped all affiliate programs except hosting affiliate programa.

  • Most professionals that run a real business producing quality products know that creating a product and marketing a product are two totally different things, and that these two activities require very different sets of skills.

Which is why it always surprises me when people ask the question: "Which is better or easier? Should I start with affiliate marketing? Or creating my own products?"

Exactly, most product creators are only good at that - creating products.

      That's why they need affiliates.

Just look at most of the guru's you guys all look up to. They don't know jack about traffic generation... unless it has to do with recruiting, guess what - affiliates to drive their traffic for them.

The biggest problem I see with creating your own products is the customer support if you are offering software.

The WSO forum is full of software offers where the customers have all kinds of problems. It seems impossible to offer something that works on every hosting platform, in every browser, on every device (desktop, tablet, phone). Then you have to worry about browser, wordpress and facebook updates that could cause your product not to work anymore.

If you are offering an ebook, videos or something it might be different but I don't know if I would ever offer a software product.

I would say that affiliate marketing is easier but the rewards are going to be so much greater if you create your own digital product and really start to get noticed!

I spent 2 years affiliate marketing and got pretty good at it, now I'm starting with digital product creation, It's like going back to school....

Time will tell if it works but it sure is exciting!

I guess if you create your own product you can collect 100% of the revenue,
being a affiliate for someone else product you collect a percentage of the revenue but you dont have to build up a big product that people like and all.

So what you're saying is because I don't have my own product and refuse to make one that I don't understand what true long-term wealth is all about?

I'm just a little confused at your blanket statement.

How could you just assume this when you don't know what people do with their money once its made.

I love creating Information Products personally but I've just recently started to venture into affiliate marketing on another site I created and just like you stated, I don't like the fact that you have no control over the product. I mean, when it's working right, you can really make alot of money from affiliate marketing but you never know how long that product you're promoting will last.

Creating your own product gives you the ability to control it forever. But it would be nice to incorporate a little bit of both though.

Affiliate marketing is not easy, nor is creating your own product. A great thing about having your own product is the fact that if it is good other people can drive traffic, however a quality product takes decent money to create unless it's solid PLR, in that case don't expect a lot of money but you get 100% money in your account. Affiliate marketing on the other hand is good because you don't have to deal with the hassles of customer service and sales copy or anything technical just refer traffic over. So I would say a mix of both. I wouldn't say one is easier than the other, both require effort and determination in order to see results.

If one is starting out then affiliate marketing is the best way to learn the whole concept.

After a little bit experience it is much easier to create your own products and sales funnel.

Product creation and support is easy if its a simple information products like ebooks, videos, audios, webinars etc. However if you create software products then support is an issue.

So there are several factors to consider before you create your own product.

Affiliate marketing takes less time to do, and is generally much easier to do.

I make good money as an affiliate marketer.

However, the long-term money and asset creation is firmly rooted in product development, which I also do.

It is easier to get started with affiliate marketing.

Once you find something that works you can take your
experience and write it up and boom you have your first product.

You can sell the product here on the forums as a WSO or you
can try other market places like Clickbank for example.

The best way would be to test your first product here on WF and
then branch out to other venues.

My forte is writing copy that is sharp as a scimitar; striking sure and mightily within hearts and minds.

But with neither the talent nor propensity for creating my own products and dealing with nuisances such as customer service issues/refunds, affiliate marketing has been quite lucrative for me over the years.

As products tend to continually fade or fizzle, it is far easier to simply dump and replace the non-performers with new affiliate products arriving on the market at an ever-accelerating pace.

My point exactly. It's all a matter of preference.

Back when I was working for another marketer, I've been behind the scenes of a ton of product launches, some 7 figure+ and some duds.

And every single time, affiliates accounted for more than 80% of the revenue.

When the product fizzled out, what do you think the affiliates who were supporting the offer did? They found something else to promote while this product creator had to scramble to create a new hot offer that hopefully would yield the same results (EPC) as the last one.

Easier to get started with affiliate marketing. But if you really want to blow up your profits, having your own killer product and affiliates will make you the big bucks.

I always choose making my own niche infoproducts. And there are ways to test them before you even create them to know if they are winners or not. ;-)

I would definitely say that affiliate marketing with the right platform is better at first and something to always have.

I think most of us started this way and its good cause if I created my first product before I had went through all the others it would of bombed.

Take jvzoo or warriorplus. You can find great creators there offering 100 percent. Just starting out would rather give out 100 percent or get 100 percent.

Create digital products and learn how to market them. It's much harder to build long-term sustainable wealth as an affiliate marketer, and frankly the idea of devoting my work hours to driving traffic towards someone else's offer -- to help them build THEIR business (and usually this person is a complete stranger) -- seems a bit nuts to me.

Also, let's not forget, as an affiliate you are not just sending traffic. You are sending leads. After you send them a customer who buys their product, that marketer now has their email address and has the ability to market them endless products in the future -- and you will rarely see a cut of this money.

The following is theory observed in practice.

I always thought the late pitch man Billy Mays had the best of both worlds.
From what I understand, first woodby inventors and product creators approached him.
Next, Billy Mays evaluated the product's marketability.
Lastly, Billy Mays either accepted or rejected the product.
The ones he accepted were required to sign exclusive licensing deal, I think, were he earned a percentage on the front and back end sales. It was a glorified joint venture.

Billy Mays sold products without having to invest time, energy and money in creating them.

Did the licensing deal's contract contain boilerplate language preventing the product creator from discontinuing the product without a good reason?

        Also, was customer service outsourced?

Who are the Billy Mays in the internet marketing world.... Ebay Kindle, Clickbank?

    Both have their own benefits.

When you get started online, you will want to become an affiliate marketer and sell other people's products. Someone new, they have no clue on how to set things up themselves.

As time goes by, you will want to create your own product so that you can have other people promote for you and you can keep a lot of the profits to yourself. You then become an expert and can teach others to do the same.

Sure there is more work but it can be very rewarding.

      Hi,

      In my opinion,

Both are good to make money online. But creating own product is better than an affiliate marketer. As you have the full control over the product. It will be good if you are creative and you have the fund to research and develop the products.

For any new comer it is not possible to create a online product as he has lake of idea and experience. He can start with affiliate marketing.

I have also seen that lots of affiliate marketer switch to a vendor and start selling own product. As creating own product is an one time job.

      I like to try both.

      Thanks

    1. Affiliate marketing seems faster to setup.. but you have no control over the asset. So I have setup complete funnels before, backlinking, writing articles... the whole 9... only to have the product be taken down a short time later.

    BOOM!

All your work down to zero in a flash!
This can be almost 100% eliminated if you:
    #1 Do your research.
#2 Connect with the affiliate manager or product owner.

Once you find something that works you can take your
experience and write it up and boom you have your first product.
    Exactly right.

and you will rarely see a cut of this money.
Unless you know to put them on your list first.

Creating products is great, as long as there is a need or desire for them and more importantly, people are willing to pay for them.

How do you create a product for a niche you know nothing about? That's a pretty neat trick.

You create a product when you see a need, not the other way around.

So for newbies I strongly suggest you start with affiliate marketing and earn as you learn. Keep your eyes and ears open, follow current trends, pay your dues and before you know it you will have a great idea for a product and some affiliate earnings to implement it.

BTW - Affiliate marketing has been very good to me, as have a bunch of great product owners and affiliate managers. I have affiliate earnings accruing every day from work I did years ago.

I have my own products now, because there is a need for them.

I've always found the two go hand-in-hand. Perhaps that is because when I enter new markets, the focus is always on creating early traffic, building an initial list and getting some early social networking presence. This not only helps with early research, but builds a platform for new launches and tests...often I start with affiliate products to get a sense for response and direction in the market. Next, I move into product creation.

The goal is ALWAYS to find a product opportunity for our own products though...that's where the bigger money is, and you can leverage other authority players in your market for much wider scale.

Funny enough, as you continue to grow your credibility and presence with your own product I find the degree of trust builds in your marketplace allowing you to recommend other affiliate products (as long as they are quality and relevant) with much higher conversion rates.

They really do go together nicely.

I agree that affiliate marketing is safer to start off with than creating your own product but the part I don't like is that you have no control over anything regarding affiliate marketing. The product creator can remove that product at anytime.

The uncertainty of it all is what gets me ... but I think combining both is the best way to go.

  • I believe that both Affiliate Marketing and Product Development Both are no easy matter to start up.
It is easier to for a newbie to start off being an affiliate marketer because these programs often times have pre made squeeze pages, sales pages, and videos to promote the product.
Both require a great deal of prep and testing however in the long haul you will make greater profits by having your own product.
So Coach I must agree with you that if you truly want to make a lot of money you
need to develop your own product. As for why product releases don't do well here?
    Beats me Coach.

Maybe so, but it's guys like me who these product creators come to when they need massive traffic and sales bc in many cases they can't get seem to get that part down.

    BOOM!

All your work down to zero in a flash!
As long as you own the traffic, you still have an asset. Just find a different offer or offers to run the traffic to.

I look at all the traffic inventory I own as an asset.

I guess with articles though, if you're siting a specific product, it may be an issue, but you can direct your traffic anywhere if you're using tracking links.

I don't write articles though as I found it's not the best use of my time.

I've done both (having products vs affiliate marketing) and I personally like affiliate marketing more.

With 4 kids, 1 of them with special needs, affiliate marketing works best with my specific situation.

I just set up campaigns, they produce traffic, the traffic converts to sales, I get paid and so the cycle continues.

I don't care who's business I'm building. It's all about ROI for me. As long as I'm seeing a return I'm comfortable with I could care less if I'm sending someone else customers. Let them deal with them.

I don't want to be dealing with customer support nor do I want to train employees or some outsourced firm to deal with customer support.

    I just don't want it.

With that said, affiliate marketing has made me a boat load more money than when I thought creating my own products was the way to go.

    Night and day for me.
