Resolved - Help! please - if you can. I Think I Have Malware on My Computer

Over the last week or so I have when visiting my usual websites and forums etc. been seeing these buttons which simply say "Play Now" and "Download" (screen shot attached).
There is no other text with them and of course there is always temptation to click on them. I never have and really thought nothing more of them until today, when an affiliate manager contacted me with a new rotating banner ad. which I placed on one of my sites.

Having placed the banner code in the appropriate place, I viewed my site to make sure it was working and to my surprise, the rotating banner shows a legitimate ad on the first one and then the self same buttons i have been seeing elsewhere. The ads then no longer rotate.but remain showing these buttons.

At first i thought an infected code, but then realized it may simply be on my computer. I use firefox mainly and looked at my site using g. chrome and do not see the offending banner then. So I deleted f/fox and installed a completely new one but am still seeing these dam buttons. I have of course taken them off my site by deleting the code (which is iframe by the way) until I can find a solution.

I am still seeing these buttons on other sites .!!

Has anyone else had this experience? if so how the hell did you overcome it?

Please help if you can ....many thanks in advance

While I am certainly no expert on this subject matter, You mention you started noticing this around a week ago... my only suggestion would be restore your computer to a previous date (*prior to you noticing these buttons.)

I have neglected to read certain terms of service in the past, and although I know better than to allow toolbars to be installed as they generally attach adware onto your computer, this sounds very similar.

My guess would be you may have picked it up in a recent download maybe?

I would do a restore to a previous date, but maybe wait and see what others say, as I know how frustrating finding the source of these things can be... I found a resolve on a Windows support forum (2 years ago) to locate and remove some BS on my pc.

    Good Luck.

I have been doing a bit of digging, and inspected the source code of the offending ads and see that they have their source code pointing to superfish.com - quite an apt name in the circumstances!

I visited their website and left them a contact email, expressing my annoyance and requesting they contact me with an explanation and remedy.

Be interesting to see if they reply.

      Hello Graham,

Here's a link that may be relevant - How to Remove Superfish WindowsShopper?(Adware Removal Guide)- AnviSoft

A lot of unwanted downloads and installations are now the result of programs being bundled in with whatever it is we have chosen to download. There is usually a tick box (which is ticked by default) giving permission for this to happen!

I've been caught once or twice myself!

If you haven't got them already, I'd recommend running Malwarbytes and Super Anti Spyware in addition to a full virus scan. They are both free to download. Watch out for those tick boxes though! Lol.

        Myles,

Thank you very much, you are a star.

Following your advice I have managed to get rid of the pesky buttons ..I didn't actually have Superfish windows shopper, but somewhere along the line I must have downloaded some other superfish malware .

Not only have I managed to get rid of the script that was causing the issue, but my computer seems to be loading pages a lot faster than before.

        Thanks again for your advice.
