keyword research issue

Hi all

when it comes to keyword research, a lot of marketers say that you must analyse the competition by putting the keyword witch you want to rank for in quote is that true?

i think that searchers usually don't put the keyphrase in quote, with that been said we want to rank for a keyword without quote in order to get traffic.

what's your opinion

your help will be very appreciated

The quotes simply are supposed to give you a count of sites that have the exact quote in question on them.

In theory that # of sites would be your competition for that particular keyword.

    For example...

... the keyword without quotes may have a count of 500,000 but the keyword with quotes may be only 10,000 sites- your direct competition for the keyword.

    Hope This Helps!!

I would like to add that, that is just one factor to look at. Don't base your decision on weather to go after a keyword solely on some number in quotes guideline.

Look at the pages that come up when you search with and without quotes. Using some firefox plugins you can get a lot of information about the sites that are ranking. Age of the domain, Google PR, number of backlinks to the domain, number of backlinks to a specific page.

Use all of this information, along with common sence, to try to figure out the strength of competition. There are some keyword phrases that have 200,000 sites in quotes and the competition is weak. There are other phrases that have only 20,000 sites in quotes but they are all big authority sites that would be very difficult to beat.

I will look at the number of sites in quotes but it certainly is NOT the deciding factor of weather I go after a keyword phrase or if I leave it alone.

I agree with Adam... Figuring out why a webpage is getting a top ranking is far more important than just looking at the number of competing pages (within quotes or not).

Another consideration is not to base your decision on a single "snapshot" - some pages get top rankings but only for a short time, the real competition are the pages which consistently get high rankings over a period of time.

Those are some more good points Colin.

There's a lot more to look at than just the sites in quotes and it's annoying when someones ebook sets a number in stone like no more than 50,000 sites in quotes. I've even seen some people who say they won't go after anything with more that 10,000 sites in quotes.

Those people are letting A LOT of great keyword phrases pass them by.

I also agree with Adam. Strength of your competition is very important. I have had keywords that looked incredible on paper, ie. over $2 CPC, 10K/month traffic and 5K competing pages. When I turned on the SEO plug-in for firefox, I realized that the top 20 results had no less than PR3 with PR4-6 on the front page. If I had gone with the competition numbers, I would have really wasted my time.

    TomG.

PS - I have also found the reverse. Keywords with 328K competing pages and a whole bunch of PR0 sites on the front page.

I agree it narrows down your competition for a particular keyword if you use it in quotes. You want to keep the number of competitors below 100k. I myself prefer to keep my competition to a new site below 60k but you can get away with 100k if you agressivly build your backlinks and traffic to your site to increase your pr. Good luck pal hope that helps
