Best Marketing for e-commerce?

I am very interested in knowing what is considered good marketing today (2013-2014) for e-commerce websites. I have been doing it for around 15+ years, and things are always changing. - Please - if you submit your 'theory or method', please share at least a little information (how it's working, cost per aquistion, etc.), a little info as to what might work for newbies, or even established sites.

I would advise you to think outside the box when it comes to marketing your ecommerce site. Most people will advise you to market on the internet, and of course that will work fine. Now if you want to put the icing on the cake, start to think of how you can get booked on TV, radio, etc to talk about your site. That will hit consumers where they live and drive them to your site. And done properly this does not cost you a cent. OK, good luck, Edward Smith.

Edward, I am curious......have you done this? What where the results?

The reason I am asking, is because I have tried radio in the past, and have been involved in radio and billboard ads for other businesses......and it has been an epic fail 90% of the time (the other 10% was a fail....just not epic! ). I am talking at least 25 that I have been involved in (not necessarily the actual ad creator or promoter). Hundreds and in some cases thousands where spent, and the results were not even 1%.
I would love advice as to how you maybe made these work for you.

Good question Lane, let me clarify. For sure advertising can be a huge money loser, your experience with paid adverting is far from unique. I am not talking about running ads, I am talking about publicity in which you appear as a guest on a radio or TV show, or are interviewed for a story in a print publication. You are interviewed on a subject you are an expert in that appeals to that particular show's audience and get a plug for your site as a part of the interview. This way you pick up the implied endorsement of the show you are appearing on and get to talk directly to your prime prospects. This costs you nothing and gives you an "ad" that lasts as long as the segment on the show. Does it work? Ask yourself how many times you have watched someone interviewed on Good Morning America, or listened to an interview on the radio and ended up checking out the product being discussed. See the beauty of this is that it almost guarantees you talking to the right prospects because a show will not book you unless your topic is right for their audience. It costs you nothing to pitch the show and it costs you nothing to appear on the show. Now that is bang for your buck!
