Has anyone ever made money with a clone website?

I have to admit, I have tried a few....2....tree times to buy a clone script and compete with sites like: fiverr.....penny auctions, and pinterest. I have never done very well with any of them, and actually spent thousands of dollars over the last 5 years on epic fails.

The only thing I have ever been able to make work, is e-commerce. But I would love to hear some success stories!

If you are having success there, then you should stick to it.

If you have failed for 5 years to try to make money with cloned sites, then you should forget about it and move on.

You want to figure out what is working for you right now and do more of it.

I honestly don't give much credence to clone sites. Unless you can improve upon the original site drastically, I doubt it will take off (if you did improve it, it wouldn't really be a clone site though). Simply put, when a website is the first of it's kind and becomes popular, it's hard to take people from the original site unless you have a great reason for them to leave. Fourerr and all of those aren't strong enough to pull an audience.

    Lane,

Why not go with what is working for you and focus your effort on scaling and ramping up in order to increase your profits.

I kind of cringe any time I hear the word "clone." My mind inserts the word "copycat" and that is not a term of endearment.

Besides the fact that "you're coming late to the party" when you attempt to copy what another business is doing, the mere fact that you're assuming if someone else is successful with this idea ... I can be too ... is wrong.

You don't have the same experience, motivation, background, and resources that others do. For all you know, Pinterest, Firerr, and others had large bankrolls to begin with. They may have started with a large team of workers or another type of head start that you don't have.

You best chance for online success, in my opinion, is to be unique and different from others in your niche. Be incomparable!

    The best to you,

    Steve

"How many cloned sites do you see doing better or surviving profitably or showing some activity to prove they are at least alive, compared to the original site/service they cloned?"

There in lies the answer to your question :-)

    As of yet - no.

I'm running a fiverscript clone, but I have only had it live for around 5 weeks.
Tweaked the html/php and graphics to make it as original as possible.
I do all the html/php and graphics myself, so no cost there except my time.
traffic generation is all being doen through free methods, so no costs there either.
Getting new sign-ups every day, and constant traffic growth, but very few sales yet, so not broke even yet.
I'm not epecting many sales until we have more than 1000 members and a number of jobs in each category, so I'll give at least the year I've paid for the domain name, and then re-assess my options then.
Wouldn't mind more suggestions on how to promote the site.
The site's in my signature, if you're interested.

You'll need a massive advertising budget to compete with the big names. Or offer something incredibly unique.

Ask youself: why would someone use my fiverr clone when fiverr already does what it does extremely well? How can I improve their formula?

You need a unique spin or a lot of advertising exposure (which means deep pockets).

I think it depends on what your expectations are. If you expectations are to make millions and millions of dollars than maybe using clone scripts are not the way to go. If you are looking to create a sustainable monthly income, it certainly is doable.

I use a clone site but I focus on a local market that is not saturated as of yet even though there are plenty sites out there like mine. Even if it was, my goal is simply to carve out enough so that I can escape the rat race. I don't need thousands of customers or even millions of dollars in sales to be happy and financially independent. I would be perfectly fine with making enough money to pay my bills and save a little money. For me that would be freedom beyond belief.

If you have patient and persistence clone sites can absolutely be a good source of income. My expectations are just to be financially independent so that I do not have to rely on a monthly income from a job I hate going to everyday. When you think about, a clone site is no different than a blog site, affiliate site or any other site you can think. It's called competition and no matter what you choose to make your online business, there will always be competition.

I'm not sure anyone has had any kind of success with clone sites... they're just imitation of the original! When buying stuff, do you go for the imitation of the original product you've always known? No innovation or creativity in imitation. Period.

I think what's really needed is a clear definition of clone site. To me a clone site is a website that is using a similar idea and putting your own spin own it. It doesn't mean that every element of that website is cloned (that would be illegal). I'm thinking Facebook, Myspace and Google + as a good example of cloned sites. They all do the same things and could be considered clone sites. They each have their own spin on how it is done but the bottom line is that they are very similar to what they do and how they do it. Just because they are the big players doesn't mean the term clone can't apply to them. The great news is that the Internet has enough users that most people will at some point sign up to all three. While they maybe in direct competition with each other, they also know there is enough users out there to make money from. Expedia, booking.com, travelocity is another example of what could be considered clones but no one here is putting them down for having the same idea.

As stated in another post, I use a clone site but my goal is not to become the big player. My market is local meaning my site caters to customers in my state only. I play a numbers game..... I live in a small state with a population of only 800,00. If I were to receive just .01 of that traffic monthly, I would be able to retire. There are other sites that do that exact same thing as I do but again, I only need a small percentage to quit working. Competition will always be there no matter whether you come up with an original idea or use some else's idea. That's just how life it and you will never be able to escape it.

There is absolutely no shame in using someone else's idea. This forum is a good example of that. How many forums do you belong too? How many classified sites are out there? If you are not making money from a cloned site, than it is probably something you are doing wrong. So forgive me if I think your statement about not using the original is a little condescending. I bet you have a blog and use affiliate marketing? Hmmmmm......how original of you.

"Clone" sites is a relatively broad term. Exact clone copies of huge sites like Fiverr, Pinterest, Facebook and Twitter I think is generally a waste of time because by the time a clone of them gets released they are already huge.

The only way I could see them really working would be to add additional functionality to the clone and make it niche-specific.

But like I said, "CLONE" site is a relatively general term... Would you consider anybody using vBulletin, Wordpress, or other popular CMS's to be using CLONE sites since they start with the same basic site?

A site is a site is a site and no matter what it is you will have to put WORK into it, not just money, or it will fail regardless if it's a clone or not.

Not a "Clone" website necessarily, but I remember I took an Amazon course (It was a WSO actually), and the instructor basically showed how to create a "Cookie-Cutter" Amaozon Affiliate Site using his preferred techniques. (I could argue either way if they were "Clones", because while the structure of the websites were formulaic, the content was unique).

I built a bunch of them, and they were profitable. Unfortunately, I never maintained them and they're all gone.

I'm sure if I kept those websites, added more original content, and continually added quality reviews, they would have ultimately surged... Big time.

(I'm very stupid for letting them slip through my fingers)...

(The real slap of it all? I never even saved the reviews that I either wrote myself or outsourced).

There's no point to this except... I urge you to have better strategy than me.

Sites like this are sold all the time. That's pretty much the only time you can make money off these sites. Sadly, this type of 'deal' is exactly the kind of hard lesson many newbies experience time after time.

I believe the clone websites can be a hit or miss. It is more so about having the right marketing strategy in place to get the clone website to become profitable.
But, if you have found success in e-commerce I think you should focus your efforts there.

I have worked on a few of these. Seems a very popular request "make me a clone of whatever". Never seen one become successful but hey.. client pays client gets.

What does work is building a better mousetrap from the ground up.

Well, "cloning" is a bit of a dirty word. However, it's true that you can make a lot of money by simply copying, or shall we say "modelling your new business on" another already-successful, proven business.

Check out Rocket Internet. Their entire business is focused around the following idea, and they've made a lot of money doing it:

The company's business model is to identify successful internet ventures from other countries (often the United States) and replicate them in predominantly emerging markets.

These scripts can make a lot of money ... for the programmers who made them. And that's about it.
