What are the rules of using random photos found in google images?

I am fnishing up a website in the fitness niche and i need images. I am flat broke, i cant buy images. What should i be worried about when grabing images off google images?

Quick question, what if i scan images out of this book i'm using and maybe blur his head or something like that?

    Not do it. Just don't

    Now go to either
    Morguefile.com free stock photos
    or
Public Domain Pictures - Free Stock Photos

Only use public domain pictures. Remember on a public domain item you have to change it in some way to call it your own, so resize the pics.

Also if a model is involved you will also have to worry if you need a model release form so remember that. I stay away from people or images that contain pics of buildings with names on them and so forth.

No reason to steal images. Those two sites contain thousands of images.

Remember a change is as simple as resizing them.

That's not enough to call it your own.

Many public domain images come from government websites because publicly available government published information is in the public domain.

But actual people who create government websites do not necessarily choose and use images properly. A lot of government sites use obvious stock photography and I doubt they purchased the rights to make the picture 'public domain'.

It came to me recently after finding some excellent stock quality images on a public domain image site and the source was a US government health and fitness website.

I wonder about the photographer (copyright holder) who has not given the government explicit permission to publish the image with 'public domain' rights.

They may have a case against the government and/or anyone who republishes the image.

      Any ideas on that?

Never pick images from internet / Google.
Most of them are copy righted images, finding them on Google doesn,t mean they are free to use.

      "Terms of Use...
...free for non-commercial scientific and educational use."

      Emphasis theirs.

"Use of any NCCAM Image Gallery item requires proper credit to the photographer or illustrator, copyright holder, institution, and NCCAM."

So you can't use them on a website that is monetized, or in a book you sell, or in an advertisement, or in a YouTube video that drives traffic, etc., etc.

People do anyway. Which is no different than just grabbing random images from Google.

I never said he couldn't use them. I said resizing them isn't enough to call them your own. You know, as in creating a new copyright.

Whatever happened to creating your own photos? Cameras are so cheap nowadays.. grab your cousin or your lazy neighbor down the block and fit them into a business suit, or whatever concept you are going for.
Taking pics out in the sun is a lot easier with lighting and they can have their own unique, original look. Work with the angles, styles, mood, colors, etc.

If you don't have any money, there are always other creative ways to go about it. Learn photoshop... you don't need to master it but knowing the basics goes a long way. If you apply yourself a little bit, you will go way further than most marketers that put out pics - either stock photos or ones they created on their own.

Yeah i was thinking about just scanning the images in this book and then create silhouette outlines of them. It would be impossible to know where they came from. Later when i make money from this site, ill buy some stock photos.

I keep hearing that plain (amazon type pictures) can be taken as a simple click of a camera cannot really be considered creative.

I have heard this on two different podcasts already, I just came to seem to find the law or case that they are referring to

Uh huh... I'd tell them to try the whole 'just a click of a button' theory and tell everyone how easy it is. Hint: The simplest looking photos are usually the hardest to create.

Here's some free royalty free image sites:

Free Stock Images & Photos by StockFreeImages.com

These two sites have free trials. Be sure to make sure you aren't billed after the trial period is over:
    https://www.graphicstock.com/freeimages/
    Kozzi.com - Buyer

Kozzi also has a plan where you can buy 10 credits for $10. For web resolution, it generally means $1 each. There are some legal benefits to paying for images.

Technically, this is my referal link and by the "letter of the Warrior Forum Law", I'm breaking the rules. However I think I'm within the "intent/spirit" by using this referal link because you can get $10 in free credits.

    http://www.kozzi.com/?ref=164563

If there's another way to get $10 credits free without a referal link from Kozzi, please post it and I'll delete my link.

Some more proof this is on the .gov site and is the law for using public domain.
U.S. Copyright Office - Definitions (FAQ)

The public domain is not a place. A work of authorship is in the "public domain" if it is no longer under copyright protection or if it failed to meet the requirements for copyright protection. Works in the public domain may be used freely without the permission of the former copyright owner.

You can also use service like this:
    CC Search
to find images that are already marked as creative commons.

I would consider going to Fiverr.com and getting someone to buy photos for you. I believe that is legal. But, I would look into it first.

Can I come over and just borrow your lawn mower without asking? No, so why could you just use people's images without asking?

    Hi,

If you want to use google images, click on images then put in the picture you're looking for. For instance a treadmill, then go to the little wheel on the right near the top of the page click on the wheel and go to advanced settings.

Then go down to the bottom of the page and click on the the dropdown arrow that says advanced settings. Once you do that, click on free to use or share and that will bring up pictures that you can use on your website.
Hope this was helpful. If you have any questions just ask. :-)
